Yep. Very sad. years and years and millions of dollars worth of restoration went into this depot and it went up in flames literly with in a matter of days before its big grand opening.
Dude youtube E-mail and bulletins are not working. Youtube is screwing up, I like am haveing major issues trying to access stuff and just the other day comments were not working, Dang it!
Dude I went to log on to youtube today and I noticed the same thing! BrianAmtrak has offically had his account closed! That realy suprised me. I tried posting a bulleting about it asking if anyone heard anything as to why his account got closed but it seems that my bulletin never showed and bulletins are like not working, more dang youtube issues!
I was on 14 northbound on June 22nd. There was a gentleman in our car , next to the last car on the train who lives in Tehachapi and works for the phone company there. He had remarked to us all when we passed through the town and we got to see the horrendous destruction of such a landmark that there will be several fund raisers taking place to raise the necessary money to rebuild the station to its former glory. All i can say is HERE HERE!!! to such an effort...
One bit of good news that I did read-- they had quite a bit of very old historical things, like signals and other railroad stuff from around that area, and all this was being stored elsewhere because of the renovation of the building. This had not been moved back (was due to be moved in the next day or so!!) so all of this was safe and not destroyed by the fire!!
That is right. I forgot about that. The depot was like empty at the time the fire hit due to the renovation but they were just about to start putting all the displays, historic items, etc inside the depot. Had the fire hit like a few days later then all the historic items would have been inside the depot and gone up in flames as well. They got lucky there.
I was actually listening to BNSF's scanner when I heard about this fire. My uncle lives just up the road from there. It's amazing how stupid people are and why they have to vandalize something like that.
Someone (singwith I think) had videos of this from onboard the Coast Starlight when it passed the station so very interesting to see pictures showing all the details. Really a huge loss, this is sad. I saw on the news that the official cause of the fire had been determined as "illegal use of fireworks", which makes it even more tragic.
I will have to take a look at the on board video of this depot from the train. This is quite a loss for the town. Apparantly they spent like millions and years working on restoring this thing and shortly before the grand opening it went up in flames. I was talking to people on the hill at the Tehacaphi loop about this fire and they said the cause was people in their like late 20's or early 30's playing with fire works. Apparantly the orriganal depot from back in the day burned down as well.
News article from one of the TV stations said they actually stopped train traffic through there for a while during and after the fire-- of course the fire was in the middle of the night, around 3am or so.
Yea I had no idea this fire even happened till I drove down there. I drove through town to get shots of 11 & 14 on the loop and then I saw the depot and I was like "dang!"

The tracks ran close to the station right? It would have made a nice backround when #11 or #14 sped by.

Yep, tracks run right next to the depot.
