it's only scary when there are a lot of unemployed, homeless and therefore potentially desperate people around. As a child in the 1950s there were many underground pedestrian tunnels around. They were always clean,graffiti free, and we always felt safe. But also this was a time period of very high employment for everybody. Nobody lacked a job and if you lost one job there were plenty of other jobs being offered to you.
