Shes most likely got a very low compression ratio, a shitload of timing and fuel, and certainly no glow plugs. It would probably never start without ether.
@crimson if the engine is cold and you do not have the glow plugs lit (disconnect them) you can use ether SPARINGLY you will do no damage and will not dry our the cylinders. period.
@bbubacz1 10 liter cummins....i think alot of inbred rednecks don't know what they are doing.....either causes pre-detination of the fuel in the cylinder, unless timing is changed.
@bbubacz1 oh yeah , and fuck you. you need glow plugs when the motor is cold..i think it is warm outside when the man has shorts and a t-shirt on......stupid fuc
@pursuit989 its not that much, you can tell the engine is burning it off thats why its loping a shooting puffs out, now if he were spraying and nothing was happening then you could say that
@UncleBubbles94 lol sorry either, true that about the reliability of powerjokes hah. BUT either is bad for diesels since it has NO lubrication in it at all. they say every squirt is 10 hours off the life of the engine, where i live anyway.
@UthinkUknowlol3715 Yes it's true, either has no lube in it, but it doesn't need it. The path of the either is: Turbo, intercooler, intake manifold, valves, combustion chamber. Not one of the those parts needs lube but the turbo, and that has it's own oil supply. The reason diesel needed to have lubricity is because of the injection pumps of back in the day where they lubricated by the diesel, but when ULSD came around, they designed injection system that need no lube from the diesel.
@zman4ish im not too sure about all its uses, but it is a very flammable liquid use to aid starting processes like i the video, but i no if u spray it in the carb itll start like nothing. hope that clears it up a little :)
Idi is indirect injection and the reason it starts so hard is because one it has huge injectors which means lots of fuel to heat up and ignite. Two, the advance on the injection pump is so far advanced it only runs right around peak rpms (some guys run as much as 40 degrees advance). And thirdly it's because in order to run almost 200psi of boost you have to drop the compression a lot. I'd be surprised if it had 14.5:1 compression.
@AJSFordMan first off, its spelled ether.. anyone who would like that comment is an idiot.. and two, how would you expect to start a mechanical injected 7.3 with 1500 hp and close to 3000 lbs ft of torque without ether?
@73psd97444 i was making a statement along with the other 50 comments that went along with the reasons starting fluid is bad for glow plugs i never said it had them so stfu
its funny how some of the people on youtube think they know everything saying that it will lock it up and stuff...these engines run on such low compression it take about a can just to get the engine running on its own...we use the same on my john deere pullers
yeah smart ass, I doubt it too, hence the ether. But my 6bt has no trouble starting in weather around 20 degrees without a grid heater, know why? good compression. Im glad the Diesel dr knows what hes talking about, evidently im not the only one after all
HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA. Yeah. It's RUNNING - so it's going to be hard to ether lock it. Secondly, it's a MECHANICAL INJECTION ENGINE. No glow plugs. No inlet heater.

@bbubacz1 it doesnt matter ether kills diesel engines period. had to rebuild my uncles ford tractor because he used ether all the time to start it.

I have never ever seen so much ether being used! holy cow
cr8zyfool85 3 months ago
ether is bein used because that thing doesn't have the compression of a stock diesel and has a hard time startin without it
bruce1D 3 months ago
no way thats ether!! that shit is poison for diesels.
UthinkUknowlol3715 5 months ago
@UthinkUknowlol3715 It's either, and it's not poison for diesels WHEN USED CORRECTLY. But for that engine, reliability isn't exactly top priority.

@jamesonreed not too mention, glow plugs would be a serious weak point in an engine pumpin out the power that this thing makes

@b789har
With glowplugs.
it's not because you have hp that you can't start right.
michaelovitch 1 year ago
@michaelovitch if this truck had glow plugs they wouldent be sprayin starting fluid in it becaus it would catch fire
cumminsboy13 10 months ago
@cumminsboy13
you're right.
i did it and it does like you said.
but it helps when few glowplugs are shot.
the" trick" is to spray only when the engine rotate and suck .
or it will make a bang : )

@cumminsboy13 also the glow plugs explode when you hit them with starting fluid

i think with that much time and money invested into this thing these guys know what there doing. I want those turbos :)
BaronRacing123 1 year ago
The reason it needs ether to start is because it has 11:1 compression so they dont blow up the motor from 150 psi of boost.
Hotrodx199 1 year ago

the reason he is using ether is because the compression ratio of the truck is so low that it cant generate enough heat to start.

@kawirider206 but does your 6bt have petrol-compression ratios with dual turbos the size of a full size spare tire?

@hvguy Those are the size of a spare tire? On what? Your honda? And I run a 84 mms400 and a hx 60 so yeah, Im not playing when it comes to boost

didn't know the made ether in the states? LOL. Really really really doubt it has glow plugs or an intake heater. SMILE

yeah lets ether lock the son of a bitch

you would have to dump a couple of gallons to lock that thing..... He goes through a few gallons of water every 300 ft.

@moose9c1 running? Sounds like it. And okay, no initake heater, prolly hydro lock the fucker then
kawirider206 1 year ago
I'm with you on that,, just the smell of the shit will lock the ol IDI7.3 down!!!
the static compression on the D.O truck is probably so low it won't hurt anything
I don't use ether, I use a rag soaked with a little gasoline,,, they knock a little less on gas fumes and ether is
