M. Night Shamaylan is very well known, and a 2 time Oscar nominee for The 6th Sense. (writing and directing) He's also directed (and, I believe, wrote) Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, Lady in the Water, and The Happening. He's very well known, although, lately, he's mostly known for being terribly inconsistent.

If you're going to dog Chris Bores out, do it because he's fat, stupid, and ugly. Or, because he can't wait to see that Nicholas Cage sorceror movie.

Err. For an American anime. Airbender was actually fairly decent. And it gets better after the first season. And how do you not know who M. Night Shyamalan is? Because almost everyone does haha.
