Wow, I remember Robert Smith. I completely forgot about him. I was watching this and I was thinking "who is Robert Smith and when did he play? This must be from the 80's or something." But then I saw the number 26 and the memories popped into my head. WOW. I can't believe I forgot about him. Yes, late 90's as the description ALSO states. ( :
my older brother took me to this game when i was about 12. hes a steeler fan and im a viking fan. i remember this play, cowher screaming at the refs at halftime, warren moon, and jack del rio's INT. the only NFL game ive ever been to but well worth it. needless to say i was surrounded by steeler fans wanting to beat the shit out of me the whole game hah. 44-24 blowout this was in 1995 by the way
Never got the recognition he should have received. His greatest misfortune was being named "ROBERT SMITH". With a common name like that you don't get much attention. Nothing common about his running style. He was a very special player.
It's sad that this is one of the few videos of him on YouTube... I remember plays he made back in 2000 when I was only 6 years old. Smith was an still is one of my favorite players of all time.
Smith retired Because he did not want to get injured and have to walk with a cane or wheel chair for the rest of his life. Much Like Barry sanders. did But Barry Retired because of being on a losing team.
Never saw this but reminded me of a fellow OSU TD run by Keith Byars (talk about a funny running style - but successful and that's what counts) in college where he lost either one or both shoes and ripped off a 65 yd TD against Ilinois If I recall correctly. Robert Smith is unique very smart man always respected his play and his as commentator. Probably too intellectual for most football fans. Great vision and speed.
oh man. this guy was a total freak of nature. look at the length of those strides! I saw this game at a sportsbar surrounded by wimpy steeler fans and was loving every minute. He outran the defense wearing one shoe!
I was at this game. It was 1995, Vikings won 44-24. A demolotion by the purple gang. I saw Jeff Christy's family tailgating in the parking lot before the game. My brother took me there for my birthday, and it was awesome. 3 Rivers was a great place to watch a sporting event. Hardly a bad seat in the house.
This Game was in 1994. I was there sitting at the 48 yard line on the Vikings side of the field. It was the same game where Chower stuffed a photo in the refs pocket going into half showing the Vikings had 12 men on the field during the FG before the end of the first half. He was fined $10,000 by the NFL. LOL
Was this the game in 1995 when the Purple killed them like 45-20? That was a great game. That was the one where pitt got penalized for 12 men on the field while they were kicking a field goal. Then cowher shoved the photo into the refs pocket while protesting there were only 11 on the field. Don't know if he could get away with that now though.
heres the deal bud. stop trying to say Adrian Peterson isnt any good. If you are actually going to say that the Off. Rookie of the Year, the Pro Bowl MVP, is not a good player, well, i dont know how to say it nicely, your just fucking retarded! yeah he only had 76 yards, Michael Turner only had 70! We didnt need All Day against Atlanta, because Visanthe Shiancoe light up the D for 7 catches 136 yards and 2 TDs. There was 7 fumbles, that game should have been a blowout, instead it was one by a td
lol,u tard..yea its hard 2 say u didnt need it,when u didnt win..lmfao and btw i never said he wasnt good..lolz i said he may not break robert smiths records, which is entirely possible u guys just take offense to everything
oh and btw..u cant compare turner vs a top ranked run d vs one in the 20s
look you moron stop hiding behind the numbers! i guess you didnt get it the first time so i'll say it again. but make sure you read slowly so that you understand what im saying ok? The Vikings fumbled the ball 7 times. The Falcons should have easily blown out the Vikings but they didnt. They won by a touchdown. the vikes were in that game till almost the final play. That either says the vikes are good, or the falcons suck. personally, i say the first. We'll see em again in the postseason.
if you guys came down to atlanta youdve been out of the game by the end of the half
you lost 4 fumbles in your own dome when ryan was supposed to show rookieness
and no you wont..were 5th seed you guys would be 3rd..youd see the bucs, eagles,or cowboys if you get in
half of your yards came in the 4th quarter when you were behind 24-7..teams always wrack up yds when the other teams just trying to run out the clock and playing prevent same way as the NO game in ATL
so what you basically just said was that your team is going to lose in the postseason. your not much of a fan are you? see heres your problem. i never said when we would see your sorry excuse for a team. i just said it would happen. and i also want to thank you. see first you rip on Adrian Peterson because he only had 76 yards, and then you say your better because most of the yards come in the 4th quarter. your arguments contradict each other.
second, the D wasnt even playing prevent till like the last series or 2. if you say they were playing prevent the entire quarter then your just fucking retarded. and you dont even know if atlanta will be in as 5 seed because they have the chance to jump to number 2. i have seen crazier things happen. you seriously need to stop hiding behind all your numbers.
well like i said i have seen crazier things happen. You are! you keep bringing up APs lousy day and saying our yards came in the 4th. When you look at the stat sheet there will be no asterisk saying that the yards came in the 4th. i should be making the excuses not you, especially if your team won. now we shot ourselves in the foot and you know it! we put the rock on the ground 7 times, of course you won.
If you had any knowledge of what your talking about you would know that teams dont run the ball when they are playing catch up. so you need to choose which one you are going to use. 7 fumbles and you win by a td. they arent the better team. we gift wrapped that game and gave it to you.
and i will use both cause im talking about 2 different things
AP had 22 car 76 yds..3.5 a carry,im referring to the low average..so u cant say its because they were playing catchup blaming it on less carries..we did a pretty good job on him
and,the team as a whole had half its yards while playing catchup, when we played prevent..and we just were trying to run out the clock..i was using that against your argument that you dominated us
there was 7 total fumbles you retard, 4 that we lost, 2 that put us in 3rd and 4th and long situations, so it might as well been a turnover. just because you dont lose a fumble doesnt mean its good. stop hiding behind the numbers and stop using the prevent excuse. for one, it doesnt matter if you were playing prevent or not you still gave up the yards. last time i checked you dont win in the first 3 quarters, you win in the 4th.
and if your going to use the dominated the whole game excuse,i should point out half your yards came in 1 quarter, when like said we were just playing prevent when yards come easier..and we were just trying to run out the clock,so its easy to stack the box
i never said we dominated the game you idiot. i said one player dominated you which is true. 7 catches 136 yards and 2 tds by a Tight end is pretty damn good. what i think is so damn funny is that your team won the game, and your the one making all the excuses! "we played prevent, all your yards came in the 4th quarter, adrian peterson only had 76 yards" it doesnt matter if it was the 4th quarter or the first, it still counts so stop making excuses.
oh and btw, when you say things like "seriously,it just is annoying how people are saying he'll be the 'greatest ever'" sounds like your not too fond of him at all.
he was my hero back in the day, i was so pissed when he retired so early. Everyone here should check out his book, even if you hate reading it's the most real book you'll ever read
that was one of the worst weeks of my life....January 14th 2001 week. get shutout by the blue fags of nj and then my favorite Viking retire. 2001 was a nightmare all around, come to think of it, cause in August we lost Korey, and then of course we tanked during the season.
imo smith was 1 of the most underrated players of the 90's and 1 of the big factors(the 2nd carter) why culpepper and moss wer so good, after the 2 left (smith n carter) moss n culpeppers stats dropped, both fell off the map, until moss went to NE wer he had brady and welker n a dominating team around him
Robert Smith was deceptively fast. He had long strides, and it never looked like he was moving as fast as he really was.
In '98, during the second game of the season against the Rams, he broke free for about a 70 yard TD. I was yelling at the TV, "Run you sonofabitch!", because he looked like he was loafing. Only after watching the replay did I realize that he was easily pulling away from the defenders.
I was at this game!!!! The 'Yinzers' were stunned, 3 Rivers was almost empty by the end of the game! Like rats leaving a rusty mill! Not a 'terble tahl' in sight! What a buncha jagoffs... ;-)
robert was the man. He was a homerun threat every carry but also had ran tough for his relatively small fram. Let see if AD can stay healthy for a remarkable carrie, as this would be the only thing that keeps him from being great. Go cowboys!!!!!!!!
Right on, what a flop, only will lead the league in rushing at the end of the season (again),and an MVP candidate, not to mention breaking numerous vikings single season records along the way.
u said he lead the league in rushing last year..so it wouldnt be(again)..lol cause LT lead the league last year..now whos dumber lol that comment didnt even make sense
seriously,it just is annoying how people are saying he'll be the "greatest ever"
and btw..i wasnt just referring to the fumbling,we got some nice hits on him and held him down to 3.5 yards a carry..and dont say we stacked the box cause there was a pass threat that game
Not what I meant, but you obviously read what you want to read. LT is showing his true self without the benefit of Turner.
You obviously didn't watch the game either, considering there were little to no "nice hits." AP was fumbiling during minimal contact, not solid hits. Turner didn't do much in the game either. AP had a terrible game, it had nothing to do with Atlanta'd 22nd ranked defense that he shredded last year, just a flat out bad game.
AP has had a knack for not securing the ball, and it was no different against Atlanta. Vikings dominated both sides of the ball and if it weren't for the fumbles and fluke touchdown after ryan got drilled, Vikes win.
It wasn't the fumbles? What are you talking about? Vikings gave them that game with 7 fumbles, 4 of them lost. Like I said, bad game by the Vikes and without the fumbles they win, plain and simple.
Yes we should miss him! He was a class act on and off the field and probably smarter than 99.9% of NFL players in any given season. At least he was on the greatest team ever: the 1998 Vikings!
We dont really miss him that much do we? We have two star running backs, he was great and all but i think we miss Carter and Moss a lot more! The three of them together was an amazing team!
played against him 2yrs in a row in high school. His Star emerged in his soph year. Still the only player in OH high school football to win "Mr. Football" award two consecutive years. One of the most gracefull runners ever to play the game...sad to see him leave so early but understand why.
I am also a huge Vikings fan and truly miss Robert Smith. We was my favorite Viking! What a thrill it was to watch him run down the field for the touchdown!!!
He was very good. Its just too bad he had alot of injuries.
I remember reading that the doctors told him he can keep playing, but he may have trouble walking by age 40.

and AP fumbled when he was drilled..and had 76yds on 22 carries..im pretty sure it wasnt just the fumbling in that game

It wasn't the fumbles? What are you talking about? Vikings gave them that game with 7 fumbles, 4 of them lost. Like I said, bad game by the Vikes and without the fumbles they win, plain and simple.

im talking about AP
do you think he wouldve torn us up if it werent for his fumbles when he had 22 car 76 yds
cause it sounded like thats what your saying
takeospikeslive 3 years ago
I wasn't talking about that at all but yes, he would have obviously. He averages over 100 yards a game.

u know the vikings had a chance to draft emitt smith instead of him

I hate you.

Why what did do to you?

Still the leading rusher of the Vikings but with Adrian Peterson on the Vikings that record will fall in the coming years.

no one knew how emmitt smith would turn out at that point. he was just an undersized back out of florida. nobody knew he'd be that great.

Part of the reason he was that great was that great offensive line. I would've taken Robert Smith over Emmitt again if I had to.

Yes we should miss him! He was a class act on and off the field and probably smarter than 99.9% of NFL players in any given season. At least he was on the greatest team ever: the 1998 Vikings!

maybe the greatest team to not win the super bowl, along with 07 pats
