  • Title suggestion: Using exhilarating music to bore people to death

  • I tend to find Richard Strauss' musical ideas uninspired and uninteresting. That is a subjective reaction to his music, so I am aware that other people will take a different view. However, when you compare the cogency of Wagner's or Mahler's musical themes and ideas, Strauss' seem rather tame. Wagner's themes, once heard, stay with you forever. I cannot say the same about Strauss' rather unexciting themes- clever though he is.

  • It's funny, because I'm usually willing to fault Argerich for speed and rushing, usually in favour of Glenn Gould's style, but in this case I just find this plain uninspired. The entire performance just feels disjointed, almost. Sometimes I think the music suffers as a result of Gould's die-hard stoicism and obedience to the score.

  • This entire performance would have been far better with a conductor who didn't just keep time and have his nose stuck in the score.

Talk about a lifeless, uninspired accompaniment. Blah.......

Gould is thoughtful and full of insight--as usual.

  • Oh Please! If you can't hear Argerich's superiority in this then you're deaf.

  • To be honest i like it. ALOT.

  • me too

  • I enjoyed this Gould video very much, thanks.

I highly recommend the Janis/Reiner recording of this work - it still puts goose-bumps on me when I listen to it.

  • the cadenza sounds like bach, but i think glenn´s approach to this music was not in a virtuoso manner, very interesting, i like this version more than m.argerich´s indeed!:)

  • eligualao is quite correct in his/her assessment. What a pity that the honest comment was given thumbs down. Gould here does NOT live up to Argerich by any stretch of the imagination. Liste3n to the Abbado/Argerich. It's ASTOUNDING!

  • but gould does play the prokofiev sonata 7 third mvmnt better than argerich. look for his recording of it on youtube.

  • Genious! Tremendous talent!

  • Thank you so much for posting this. GG has been a real inspiration in my life and this performance really moves me.

  • Sensational! Bravo! TY.

  • I like this. I guess the Argerich version on youtube is the more standard, but this version (music and video) brings out the fantasy and dare I say partly "camp" nature of the piece

  • There would be more, but it seems that the moment someone disagrees with the performance, everyone is at the ready to flame them...

I completely agree with eligualao; slow, humourless and boring.

  • @MichaelDLC

Just speechless. Totally swooned, that is all.
