Just saw Petula in NYC past Saturday nite. She is 80 or will turn 80 soon. She still sounds great. Unfortunatley she didn not perform this song but she did sing most of her hits.
She is my second favorite singer in the world. I'm only 19, but petula has always been one of my favorites. 60's and 70's is my favorite. I also love 40's and 50's. I hate the rubbish of today! One of my biggest dreams is to see petula live and also meet her and tell her how much joy her music gives me. I feel so warm when I hear her voice and watch her and her beautiful warm face and smile. If i was in this era, I would love to be one of those young girls in the audience. Not screaming though,
And who in the f.eeng world of today could ever top this? I do not think so! This is live, this is real, and this is honest music. Tony and Petula did such an amazing job of this co-written song. I remember when it first came out, and anyone who disagrees, well, you know what you are.
I think the studio track of this is one of many sessions that Jimmy Page played on? Along with Colour My World for example where his style is unmistakeable. Just imagine, in an alternative universe one of the biggest bands of the 70s was Pet zeppelin ...
I simply cannot believe it has taken me five years to find this. It makes me feel so stupid!! Thank you for uploading this. I saw it when I was seventeen in 1965, just before going to Vietnam. When music was music and girls were not afraid of anything.
How did she do this, you would think?! A 50s singer, terribly nice songs then she goes continental. Along comes the Beatles and the stones and its goodbye to the helen shapiros and such. Then along comes Pet Clark with Downtown, Youre the one, sign of the times, subway...how good is she!? I would love to hear Cat in the window if anyone has it to post.A simply brilliant song. The cat in the window has a tear in his eye, hed love to fly etc in Pets purfect diction. Frightfully good.
Love Petula Clark. So incredibly talented. For some reason, I just have never associated this song with her as I have with so many of her others. Love the Vogues version of this as well. I always think it is nice when a song can be re-recorded by another group/artist and they can have a hit with it as well.
Co-written with her regular songwriter Tony Hatch. I believe this is from The Big TNT Show, which was filmed or videotaped for TV and movie theaters in '65, at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, CA., with a lot of other pop/rock acts that had hit records in '65. I recall TV Land showed this some 10 or more years ago. Great to see it again.
I so adore this --- thank you very much for posting it! Sung by the gal who wrote it, and it's *live*, unless I'm much mistaken. Love The Vogues' cover, too, but here you have one gal, with one voice, that's as powerful as all four of them put together! I can't believe this didn't "chart" in the US (or, if it did, not very high).
Here's the thing. Pet shows her musical ability as the co-writer of you're the one along with Tony Hatch. Being a singer is one thing... being the actual creator of the song is a much longer lasting dynamic. It is so interesting how someone with a musical styling that is so plesant resonated with the young people of the age. You can see from the video that she is really loving the love she is getting back from this enthusiastic crowd.
I agree - the Vogues had a superior performance and orchestration, vocally and instrumentally. Interesting how one artist can improve on another's original.
it must have been 1965. i was 18 yrs. old.they where playing, [youre the one] on the radio as my mate and i, were on the way to a party on a yacht, on the hawksberry river. it was a magic song, sung by the great pet clark. it didnt get much better than that.thanks for showing it, and reminding me how old i am.
WHY DID A LOT OF SHOWS HAVE GO-GO DANCERS IN THE MID SIXTIES, THEY ARE ANNOYING AND DUMB

she sings this so much better live than in the studio version, but the crowd noise ruins the sound for listening purposes :(

How I love you and your music!
I'm 15 and I love you since I was a little girl...
My grandma was a big pet clark-fan and so I grew up with her music!
I know, she's an old lady now, but her voice is still warmer than the warmest sunshine and & softer than a sigh.
lots of love, yours
Denise

What great moves she has to along with that fantastic voice.
Kinda innocent yet still there....
Dunno how to explain it.
Just really grabs ya.

Great song that she wrote. Her performance is really good although the Vogues really nail it with the harmony vocals.
