it wasn't a stupid idea. I would simply advise you to try using peanuts held out from two fingers (thumb and forefinger) it gives them something to really hold onto. me and my sister have hand fed squirrels a lot and have never gotten bitten. in fact most of them are very gentle and shy creatures. just hold the food out in your open palm, or hold it with just two fingers so they feel safe in taking the food offered to them. also, apple slices work well for this too.

I learned this lesson when I started feeding them. Then i got the idea to hand feed them. And finally got one to come up to me, but I could tell when I offered it to him, he looked up at me, like are you sure about this? So I decided to wait and try again with a cashew, which works well. I haven't been bit yet!

Squirrels move so amazingly! This is the first time i've seen a video of one, never ever in real life. I live in Australia.
