Cool!! The bass I just got looks identical to the one you're playing here. I look forward to your instruction & tips as I attempt to learn & become proficient at playing.
Tell me... I noticed that you hold your left hand "improperly", as in it's not proper classical technique that people say you need to do. Like, your thumb behind the neck, fingers parallel with the bridge... My question is, is it because you have big hands? Because I have that problem, I'm 6'4. Do zou have any difficulties playing properly with that kind of technique? Thanks
Dude, you are a excellent instructor. I took music theory in college and i passed the class with a "C" but I still don't understand anything. This is the best lesson on chords, scales, and modes that I've ever had. Keep up the lessons bro!!!
dude!! nice vidd. i got a six string bass. and i want to find out where the artificial harmonics are, i find some by mistake. but i want to know where most of them are. if you can please make a vidd showing this. i would greatly appreciate it :D
i dont understand it lol . im really just starting out and i know only little about chords and scales this is actually my first week playing bass . what do i do ?
@CHARRRLII14 Keep playing and come back to this video in a year - or whenever you feel ready for it. This is definitely an intermediate/advanced video.
hey man u play great but my problem is you did not name the notes u was playing im talking about when you were showing them different kind of modes we can do
@onelove09ism If you still care - which chords did you have a hard time seeing? Let me know and i'll email you a tab. sorry for taking so long to get back to you.
Dude you are really good, can you upload more tutorials? Maybe one on how to include chords into bass solo's, perhaps in the example of Stuart hamm when he played live in San Fransisco with Joe satriani.
Great playin on the improv clip. Just got a five string and an amp. Never played a day in my life but I love it and want to learn. Musically inclined but starting from scratch. Need a good beginners DVD/online series that you would recommend. Dont want to end up with one that doesn't make it plain and not give you your moneys worth. Any recomendations. If so get at me.
I could benefit a lot from a book at this point in my playing, but when i started out, i NEEDED videos to learn effectively...and there was no youtube (crazy, right? this was in early 2003!) - so i went to my local guitar center and purchased volumes one and two of a video series called "Bass Basics with Dale Titus" and I didn't move on in the video until i was able to play what he played EXACTLY!
books will help you to learn how to read music - an invaluable tool
Hey man thanks for the video, it was very helpful. I have a question though. I see cats use a scale run all the time and I have not quite figured out what it is. Its the scale that justin Rains uses all the time. He descends from the c string using four frets apart then he descends all the way to the B. What is he doing do you know?
send me a link to a video with the scale that you're talking about. Send me the time marker as well. I'd be more than happy to help you figure the scale/pattern out.
my first guess (if the fingers are spaced by four frets) would be the diminished scale.
I like the cabs. I'm powering them with a high power power amplifier tho.
You'll notice a night and day difference in cab volume if you a/b them with other cabs, but you'll also notice a night and day difference in how the cab handles sound across the spectrum. I'm a fan of the full range (2 10s, 1 5 and 1 tweeter)
Thank you. I've been playing for a year by ear for my church. I'm good enough to mimic what I hear but not smart enough to do more than that. You put enough in this one video to help me in my quest. Thank you.
roomtempJ this is for you and anyone learning like I am (kinda playing for a year in my bed room lol):
I watched this video 4 times in the last 5 months and on this 4th, time I get. I thought I had the 1st time but i see now... I really did not. which makes me think what will think in 2 months time lol
In any event...Thanks TempJ for sharing and Good bless.
God bless you bro.I play bass also, but I lost just about all my theory,so this is a good video for me to try to bring back something I lost .I to have a testimony,on how I lost my theory.peace.2.COR.5:17 I was a R&B bassplayer, but I came to Jesus.peace!!!
the associated scales and chords are all in the major scale. no tricks here!
think about a g major chord. There are a 1,3,5&7. WELL the same is true for all of the other chords in that scale! The notes in a "2" chord (aminor) are just the 2,4,6 and 8.
The scale thing is nothing special. These are all modes based on the major scale. All i'm doing is starting the same major scale on different degrees.
You would think that it wouldn't make a difference because it has all the same notes - not so!
How do you know if it's a E7 chord or Emaj or such? You probably already mentioned it, I will study your comment thoroughly later. Thank you for your time bud, you really helped me out.

I've been playing bass for almost exactly 6 years (i purchased this bass -my first bass- on superbowl sunday 2003). I went away to college and picked up bass while I was there. My theory? I picked it up piece by piece over the 6 years. I was never formally taught. I did take 2 lessons from justin raines on arpeggio application while at school in boston.
Jesus made this heathen new/wanna know my testimony? read ephesians 2. haHA!
Good question. The answer is more easily said than done. I've got some free time, so hopefully i'll get into action and put up another video with some more direct application of these concepts
Hey Hey....cheers from Australia !! Yeah , the lick is based on a 2-5-1...love that stuff...but that lick is actually a Charlie Parker idea btw...hey, he is one the greatest ! Really dig your playing and site...keep in touch ..
Heck yea man! Im glad to see your knowladge of the modes!
Its sick to see a skilled bassist that has knowledge behind what hes playing. And hes not concieted! Join a good band where you make tastey music! :).
man i learned stuff like this in music theory last year, but i already forgot it, and i had never really learned how to solo, but you seem to know a lot about music theory and your chords, nice video.
it's minor. A good way to figure out what any chord should be (whether it is minor/major, whether the 5th should be diminished or whether the 7 is major or dominant) is to play the scale of the key you're in, starting from that note.
The 7 of G is F#. We know it's minor b/c its third (the note that defines tonality of a chord) is A...which is a minor 3rd above F#. We know it has a dominant 7th because the note directly below it is a whole step away (E). We know it's diminished b/c it's 5th is C
one thing to keep in mind is that not every chord in normal music will include the 7!! Not every 5 is dominant. Not every 4 has a major 7th attached, etc.
Well, mines a 4 string whereas it looks like you've got the 5 string model.

fingerboy18 2 years ago
The only major chords in the major scale are the 1 (G), 4 (C) and 5 (D).
The one is a maj7 b/c the 7 is a major 7 away.
The 4 is a maj7 b/c the 7 of the 4 (the 3) is a major 7th away.
The 5 is a 7 b/c the 7 of the 5 (the 4) is a dominant 7th away. I hope this makes sense.
It might help if you write this on a card for yourself:
G-A-B-C-D-E-F#-G-A-B-C-D-E-F#-G and point to the notes in each chord as you identify it.
For the "1", you would point to G-B-D-F#. F# is 1/2step away from G -->maj7
