  • this isnt a password recovery tool its a password reset tool the difference is recovery helps you get the password back this just resets or blanks it

How do you use the terminal to change the password

I'm new with linux, and running Ubuntu 8.10

  • The tutorial shows you how to get to the Terminal once there you can type in passwd followed by your user name and press enter it will then ask you for your new password

  • thanks man your a life saver :)

  • and how can i get to that blue screen ??

  • ok how bout edubuntu?

  • Should be the same on edubuntu

  • @LoonySeo It's just based off ubuntu, so the process should remain the same.

  • thanx,

    helped for root.

  • i dont renember my username what can i do now`?

  • When you get to the bash prompt (command line) type in

    cat /etc/shadow

and you should see a list of all the usernames on the system.

  • I get to the part where I type in the password and the keyboard stops working

  • it's working it simply doesn't display the "stars" that it would normally display. Just type in your new password and press enter, no stars will show up but it should then ask you to confirm password again no stars. just type it in again and press enter.

  • Mine says

    give root password for maintenace

    (or type contrald to continue)

    WHAT SHOULD I DO

  • hmm are you useing ubuntu because you'd only see a request for a password if you set a root password and ubuntu by default doesn't have one set. if you can log into ANY account with the ability to use the SUDO command you can just log on normally and change passwords for any acct useing the passwd command with just the terminal

  • What should I do if I don't get the GRUB prompt?

  • you should see a countdown timer they press escape and you should be able to select recovery mode

However if you don't have the timer it may be disabled and you'd need to fix this setting in /boot/grub/menu.lst which may or may not require a boot disk

  • Yeah, I figured out that you don't get the GRUB prompt if using PowerPC Ubuntu.

  • thanks man!!!!!!muy buen video

great video..i reseted my password thank you very much!!

  • i forgot my username lol

  • no biggie when you get to the bash prompt (command line) type in

    cat /etc/shadow

and you should see a list of all the usernames on the system.
