The main problem I had with the "rivals" in B/W was that although they were fleshed out, they were fleshed out to be an annoying little b*tch and a prick, both of which served only to challenge me to a fight when I hadn't saved in a while, scaring the hell out of me, and then get curb-stomped. And complain about if for about a minute.

@4072 Heh. if you think about it, the only reason he became Champion was because he's the only one you didn't battle just before the Elite 4 or Victory Road. xP You beat Silver, Wally, Pearl (Barry). Bianca doesn't really care to challenge them. The former three all decide that there's no point in challenging the Elites if you'd just beat them. So they decide to train a bit more.

And actually, Cheren defeats the Elite Four as well, which is all Blue did.

@ISetCheezOnFire I disagree. I liked the Black and White rival theme and I loved Castelia City's theme. I also liked the roaming legendary pokemon fight theme as well. None of the other cities were too great though, and the elite four theme was repetitive and got on my nerves. I thought 4 was the worst generation of them all (not saying it was bad necesarily, just not as good as the others). 1 was my absolute favorite, 2 was a good one and so was 3. 5 has the best plot of any of them.

If you speak English, his proper name is Blue.

@VoltJoeSantiago I used to have the same problem. Of course, he becomes a pushover once you catch Kyurem. I guess it really depends on your starter the most, and what version you play. For example, Samurott used to be another tank, mostly because I spent most of my time training Emboar. Then, when I finally beat Ghetsis and got my Zekrom, it was easy from there on out. Zekrom is pretty much my counter to any water type.

The pokemon themselves have become either boring&weak for too long or WAY too powerful; some with very wonky stats (like Zebstrika, for example -_-). Even Emerald's rivals were too easy! D/P/P were ridiculously unskilled. They had potential and poured exp, but it was like they were letting you win. Bianca...just...*facepalm*

They weren't just people put into the game so you'd have a "rival" character. They are deeply involved in the storyline, they had their own ideals, etc. All in all, I personally believe this makes them the BEST rival characters so far.

Red and Blue are badasses and all, but Cheren and Bianca were actually fleshed out

Theres no deep explaination, compared to the other rivals, even compared to Barry those two are just unneeded. I dont think making them seem more "human" proves anything or makes them the best, Rivals have been going downhill since the start and to be honest, i would rather Gen5 have no rival because the story had no use for them. N was the nearest thing to a good Gen5 rival.

I like the character growth of the first two rivals but after that they all felt to cookie cutter. Gary Oak from R/B/Y to G/S/C to me seemed to grow alot as a person, being humbled by Red enough will have that effect on you. And Silver went from a 'tough' guy to truely understanding how to have a relationship with his pokemon as friends and not just tools. The others just seemed to me to be there to make you have to backtrack to a pokemon center after a mildly annoying fight mixed with hints.

1. Johto

2. Hoenn

3. Kanto

4. Sinnoh

5. Unova

In my opinion the latest two rival tracks were just too light hearted... The first three gens' rival music made the battle seem so much more intense.

@thenewcrowXfeather1 Mind you in both the last gen games, the rivals themselves are less intense, being just your buddies. Gary was a douchebag and Sliver was a both a theif and he pushed me! What a dick. However the Unova Pals and Barry were just well meaning guys who wanted a friendly battle.

Blue and Ruby (Brendan) are brothers, since they share that smug, trollish look.

Saphire (May) and Cheren are close cousins, Cheren being the more sophisticated.

Emerald (Wally) is the cousin of Barry and Bianca, who are brother and sister.

And Silver doesn't have a family, leading him into a life of crime and badassness.
