  • Anyone know who the piano player is on this particular recording?

  • what fantastic chemistry they have, such a tight sound!!

  • like this if you love jazz.

  • this is god

  • 2 people took the b train

  • Ryan kisor on trumpet

  • the piano solo got a little bit annoying, but just a bit. busy backgrounds on the head!! cool stuff! and leftfootlouie, i like some rap.

  • ryan kisor on tp

  • That's not Wynton or Sean Jones. I remember this, I was 9 years old when this came out. Sean was prolly a teenager. That is Lew Soloff.

  • does anyone know who takes the trumpet solo on this? is it wynton or sean jones?

  • So cool that I ever heard in Take The "A" Train!! A Train is horn, but all long piano play, then, best horn plays coming late half. So Nice, So Good.

  • Looks like 2 people took The 'B' train...

  • who is the rhytm section??

  • ok When in the world will i be able to watch a video without all the mindless arguing Honestly This is just becoming a growing nucence Every single video i try to watch there are people bad mouthing it and then other people bad mouthing the other person I'm really sick of this now!!

  • this epic stuff!!!!!!!

  • Wow... it's piano playing like this that really inspires me to practice more... Lol

  • @MustangsDog always practice more

  • Roland hanna is a bad ass!! Samuel Wyatt

  • Would anyone like some rice wine? It goes well with the good jazz. Love the Clark Terry quote too, he did that with a Lamb roast.

  • Wynton and the guys sound wonderful here....

  • 3:32-3:41 direct quote from Clark Terry's version with Red Mitchell =)

  • @Trumpetmagician

You're wrong. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra was founded in 2004 by Wynton Marsalis. The song was originally played by Duke Ellington, but he was not in the J@LC Orchestra.

  • At 3:11 you can see Wynton's classical influences as he plays his solo break identical to one of the major melodies in Rachmaninov's piano concerto 2.

  • Best piano intro since Duke used to do it.

  • With the Acronym rap you have two different things. Spiritual and Mental (R)ape with (A) (P)en and Beautiful enlightening (R)hythm (A)nd (P)oetry.

Lil wayne is a Rapist. Lupe Fiasco is a Poet. Heck even Louie Armstrong with the legend saying that he started Scat Singing could be put in the poet bracket.

If you guys like my perspective on things check my blog out I bet you it's a refreshing click of the mouse. Newagerealness.blogspot.com

  • @ kool... This guy... Duke Ellington. Heard of him

  • Roland Hanna killin it! Lew Soloff on the trumpet solo...

  • Just to be clear - the piano soloist is Sir Roland Hanna.

  • eargasm at the piano opening

  • Jacksoncrockett, leftfootlouie, and James9533: Nice job being big-mouthed Youtube users. Please take it somewhere else so the space you are using may be used to compliment these wonderful musicians, instead of to throw hollow threats, and make smart remarks that raise your respective self-esteems.

  • @Hoboninja1000 Absolutely agree, thanks for the comment.

  • who was on the piano for lioncoln center back in the day?

  • @koolanddagang12

Sir Rolan Hanna: the Horowitz of jazz piano.

  • A few years ago I thought this was Wynton, and in the end of the song, he gets a bit winded. Then I realized, naw, that couldn't be Wynton he'd be circular breathing. This rendition is badass though. Soloff is swinging his ass off. Will someone please get him a backrub or something, he sounds gargly :) I love it.

  • i like the 0:59 progression..

  • CANDY CORN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! why has jazz become a nostalgic whitewash of yesteryear butt muffins??? mister Marsallis is leading the cavalry to the next Disneyland light parade. GET REAL.

  • Comment removed

  • @SidewalkFrequencies Disneyland light parade?... OMG... dude, you better go to Disneyland yourself and have fun listening to Peter Pan or something... This has nothing to do with Wynton Marsalis, and besides of that (for your information) jazz is certainly something out of time... there's no "yesterday butt muffins" here... it's pura talent and improvisation skills... really man... go home and listen to some Britney... I'm sure that will make you happy...

  • I creamed my pants

  • can somebody post a video of JLCO playing Ko-Ko?

  • @kuosakisasuke I've found it :)

    watch?v=bkq4ICIVazs

  • Sounds bueatiful doesn't it.

  • Rap.. what's rap ?it's not this sound of talented musicians!

  • @leftfootlouie not true, have you checked out any old school hip hop?

  • @jacksoncrockett Jackson when you reach my age then start giving out musical critique .Until then, go watch your peachfuzzz grow!

  • @leftfootlouie age is just a number louie. And I will watch my peachfuzz grow and enjoy doing so.

  • Comment removed

  • @leftfootlouie AGE IS ALSO KEAN EXPERIANCE.

  • @jacksoncrockett Age is also kean experience.Use a good clean razor when you go for a shave . It lessens the chance of bad cuts.lol

  • @leftfootlouie Some rap is actually really nice, even though most of it (especially mainstream rap) suck. There's some really great old school and underground rap out there, and some rappers are actually very serious and talented musicians. I believe that there's both good and bad music within any major genre of music (including jazz).

But, even though we might not share the love for hip - hop, we sure do share the love for this particular recording :)

  • that trumpet solo is smokin'

  • Sir Roland Hanna on piano...maybe the best "unknown" jazz pianist in the last 40 years? His stuff with the Thad/Mel Lewis Big Band always kiiled.

Soloff is nasty on his trumpet solo too

  • I have never heard that in my life. And I don't know about you, but 5 sharps is never a good thing for me.

  • beautiful

  • Jeez 5 sharps for Wynton

  • just so you know, take the a train is actually in C, making that D for Wynton, hence 2 sharps

  • You are wrong.

  • actually hes right. this is in C.

  • I was saying that to jonbrewer17. Not everyone else. jonbrewer17 had transposed the wrong way. He went down a whole step and not up

  • ...tnx!!! now i have a list!!! i'll be hitting the shop this weekend!!!

  • ... hey friends... i'm a new jazz listener and lover... what albums would you recommend for a beginner like me... thanks!!!

  • hey, start with the roots of jazz: Louie Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Bessie Smith, Clarence Williams. Here you find the real felling of the Jazz!

    Regards!

  • Of course, the song IS "Take the A Train." Wynton's on Ken Burn's series is worthy also. But this is the great Count Basie &

Duke Ellington. Sample it on Itune or another to know this truth.

  • This is the lincoln center recording made for Ken Brun's series. Duke and Basie for the first time is completely different.

  • Re: Duke and Basie for the first time is completely different.

True, waffleboy83. I was distracted by a family emergency and

unfortunately wasn't giving it my full attention. Ellington and Basie was playing on my Itunes at the time, so I said them. Thanks!

  • PS: Yet, I still don't know for sure it is Lincoln Center. I don't have time to check now. Even if so, who is piano player? Do

you know? I was a former jazz producer for many years as Wynton knows well and don't recognize piano.

  • Re: This is the lincoln center recording made for Ken Brun's series

Of course, I mean that I don't recognize a piano player today who sounds so much like the Duke, since you said it was "recording MADE for Ken Burns' series." Duke had died before this Ken Burn series began.

  • I'm not sure why someone put this as Wynton's band, for he has some good work also. This is the historic recording of Duke & Count Basie recording together for the first time, called "First Time! The Count Meets the Duke"

  • Thats Lew Soloff, he is awesome! He got so much soul in his playing.....love it!!!

  • It's Lew Soloff.

  • im thinking the soloist is wynton.

  • It's definitely Lew Soloff. This recording is the first track from the album "They Came To Swing," which is a great album featuring Lew Soloff, Jon Faddis, Nicholas Payton and of course Wynton, Wycliff and the rest of the amazing LCJO.

  • it definitely isn't Wynton - I think it's Lew Soloff

  • I would've guessed Seneca Black

  • Sound is fine but video is zero - shame.

  • Lew Soloff

  • Could the soloist be Lew Soloff or R.Mullens?

  • Ryan Kisor-Trumpet Solo

  • no, dude, that doesn't sound like ryan at all.
