So I need to make sure that when I practice the traditional grip that my left wrist should be the only thing moving, while refraining from the urge to include my wrist?
I learned traditional placing the stick on the soft spot between the cuticle and the knuckle. Does it really matter cause ive spoken to people from a well know university with a well known drumline. I know in core style music they place it on the cuticle but is it necessary or is it preference?
Ok so I have 5 months to learn how to do this.. I'm trying to get to the military marching band and traditional grip is crucial over there! Wish me luck!
man i love the way you teach, very helpfull, you keep it simple and make it so easy to understand, and i actualley really like it when u ramble on hahaha it gives your videos character and like this more fun to watch. i especially found helpful the video you made about odd time signatures, since then i've learnt a whole lot more and it feels alot more natural when playing in an "odd" time signature. im sharing your vids with all my drumming friends. hope to see more of u again ;)
Great video! I'm not a drummer, I'm a bass player, but I was surprised to see a guy on the Dream Theater auditions holding the stick like you do, it looks more technical.
I find that using this grip on a flat snare is much more difficult. Having it angled forward like many of the jazz greats did allows for much easier application and better control.
Is there anything you can do to the technique to make it easier?
Hi Darrick! First thank you very much because the video is very useful. Next, I've got a problem, anfter the use of the traditional grip I feel pain at the ring finger. How can I solve this problem?
I am going to be playing in a drumline in my high school and traditional grip is required. I have experimented with it but i am not strong in it yet so hopefully i can utilize your tips until I have to play somewhere important! hahah Thanks so much for the video!
Your arms look almost as thin as the sticks. I understand you have been having some health issues I hope you get much better soon. Your videos help me very much. I'm a beginner trying to get a feel for how to do some things.
im a beginner at this..so like...when u hit the snaredrum wit ur left hand(with traditional grip)and come back up with the stick, shud it be wobbling around ?
like after the impact of the stick and drum, my stick starts 2 wobble a little lolz
O.O
(comment me back in my profile plz, ANYONE that has good info)
ive been working on trad grip for a couple months now. hard at first, well, still hard for me, but i get these little breakthroughs and when it happens it feels so good. i swear i swing more this way. its also made me understand bounce better and my match playing has improved. good lesson!
damn man ur worrying me now...iv been drummin for a year and a half with no lessons,im self taught and i cant read sheet music for shit.i drum by ear but im feelin like i should start learnin some sheet stuff now...:(
I have been practicing with traditional grip a lot lately and, really, I get much better bounce and note quality with my left hand now. Yay!
But, as a primarily rock drummer, I can't seem to get that same snap on the snare that I can get with matched grip. Even with the elbow-in trick, I just don't get that power. Any suggestions?
Great vid mate. Informative and entertaining as well.
Lowering the left elbow also reduced the chances of the military drummers having their left arm shot off from musket ball or shrapnel. FWIW, they weren't drummers as such, but signallers who relayed information to the troops on the field via drum patterns.
yeah dude what happened to you. on your older videos you look a lot healthier than you do now. you definitely look like you lost some unhealthy weight bro
very nice i've been looking for some tips on Trad i go to a school that uses mach grip but i know i will need to learn trad for possibly even the school i am at now because of a director change but ya i wanted to be ahead of the crowd here so thanks
Derrick, im trying to play traditional, i followed your lesson step by step since last two weeks but, i dont know how to gain like loosenes in my hand, it doesnt give me rebound, how can i help it, i can play singles but i think im missing something. Thanks for your lesson, theyre a big help, and sorry for my bad english.
Since I switched myself to trad grip a couple of years ago, I'll try to give you a little help.
I think you'll gain control and looseness as weeks goes by.You have to get used to use certain muscles.Just remember that the fulcrum is between your thumb and your hand. To allow the stick to rebound, you mustn't choke the stick with your other fingers.
I'm female and have pretty small hands. I have to learn traditional for college drum line this year, but it feels like its hard to keep my thumb and index finger together on my left hand, they always end up slipping apart. Is it possible my hands are just too small or fingers are just too short for traditional grip?
drumfreak12345 no you dont play it on your right hand if your right handed...traditional grip is played on the left hand...you could try it but its not as effective if you do it with your right hand...you can get all the dynamics you need from your right hand in match grip or power grip
whoa, who are you and what did you do with the guy who taught me heel toe? its like im looking at a completely different person, also if your right handed do you hold the traditional grip on your right or left hand?
Hey Derrick, its been such a while that the length of your hair grew so much since your last few videos, when I saw it, I was like "damn, when the hell did he get it to reach his neck's end!" or probably even lower or WAIT A MINUTE! I hope that ultra-fast hair-growing potion from The Simpsons was a lie.
Anyways, major thanks go to your contributions that i've made pretty good use of, so far.
Halo 3 is a fantastic game although I tend to think they skimped on the story at the end. But then again you don't play halo for the drama, its all about the action and it is simply glorious to behold. Put your sticks down for awhile and check it out!
great stuff, but if you get to higher speeds (140BPM) with as much powers as you show, do you still beat the drum with the fingers on the stick or do you (like I found out to play myself) let go of the stick with the fingers to avoid strain in your fingers?
yeah, but the way to play just normal(full) strokes, is it to open the hand a lot and push the stick down with both the rotating motion and the thumb or is it more just accepting the rebound with the fingers still around the stick(I find that more hard to do)
Hey folks, there is a quick ringtone quite noticeable towards the end of the video. There might even be two, I dunno, point is: fair warning because I was going nuts while editing thinking my phone was going off. My bad, its my phone, sorry if it constantly makes you check yours. :P
it's been a very long while...i didn't think you'll come back... You know that this is my biggest problem: the traditional grip...For personally helping me, thanks!
So I need to make sure that when I practice the traditional grip that my left wrist should be the only thing moving, while refraining from the urge to include my wrist?
