@hampe902 Thanks. That's very helpful information. I found a whole listing of lyrics for the album just Googling that title. The lyrics are in romanized Korean (phonetic), so still a mystery though.
gday basspig. love your videos man, been followin them for a while! do you reckon you could send me this song in an email or other means? would be heaps appreciated mate!
1st, Dude, i'd love to see that thing in person, second, i have a pretty good system(in my opinion) that i would like you to check out. also, are these QSC Powerlight amps good or no, cause that may replace some of mine. My current amp is a Carver TFM-55x.
@bait28 I do have visitors stop in from time to time from all over the world, so definately welcome if in the NYC/Boston area.
The QSCs are excellent, however, much more complex to repair than conventional amplifiers. There are great deals on them from time to time on eBay.
The Carver TFM-55 is a real fine amp. If you use an active crossover, it can be used for the mid/high freqs. I would not use the QSC for mid/high. Only for bass, as I don't think it would be good sonically due to topology.
@MKBEntertainment I've had a number of visitors over the past few years, many self-proclaimed 'bass pigs', and a surprising number of them became uncomfortable with the volume levels I was demo'ing at during the 'warm up' phase. Rock musicians, other war veterans, etc., didn't much enjoy the high SPLs.
Yes, those amps driving the woofers are QSC Powerlight 6000 watt amplifiers. Bass is very tight and transient response amazing. WAV audio from MOTU 896 as source.
@bait28 well that would for sure bump :D i love dubstep and that kind of music that slams crazy hard. I also am one of few that does not mind high DB's :)
I say if you dont feel it in your whole buddy it aint loud enough :) I like when it hits low and hard :)
no commersially produced music have that much bass in original (if you compare to the bass to the midrange level)
It's an awesome speaker system and for most music on CDs that's really nice - but if you work with video editing your own recordings you shud adjust it so you have a flat frequency response.
@C20rules The system MEASURES flat, but there's a question mark in there because I don't know how flat the measurement mic is.. pretty flat to 20Hz over a sampling of 85 of these mics, but varies by 14dB below 20Hz, most being -dB.. This Korean disc has some of the deepest bass I've ever heard. These were recorded with my studio condenser mics. I've noted in the past that they do seem a little bottom-heavy with natural sounds and thunderstorm recordings.
Ok, 14 dB is a lot - I would say that you shud calibrate youre measurement microphones, otherwise your measurements is not very much of a help
But then of course - if it's your own recording, it probably have a lot more bass than commersially mixed music (even in case your recording mics is not flat ether)
I got it wrong first - the music is from a disc but the videos is recorded with your studio microphones. It's hard to know the original level and music spectrum tho - but when looking at a waterfall spectrum graph, the level is about the same 40 Hz all the way down to 15 Hz (no roll off - seems like your studio mic and measurement mic have similar response).
My speaker cones is just jumping a lot, but it's not much sound reproduced in the deepest parts. I want better speakers - haha
@lilhoede1990 The lights dim when I switch on a PC, too. At the time this video was taken, we had a problem with an undersized neutral wire. I ran a parallel wire in 2008 and it's much better on maintaining line voltage now.
Necessary for whom? :-) In my case, yes, as it has to carry the entire mid/top end for all those woofers. It's still about 15-18dB below the woofer output, so the mids will run out of gas long before the bottom end, but considering the bass-heavy balance of modern music, this works out about right. The peak power is in reserve for pyrotechnic events like explosions and gunshots and is not normally used with music program. Most music is 40dB below that level.
When I moved away from horn drivers in 1982, I needed something that would provide similar efficiency, yet have the ability to be linearized through careful baffle design. I looked at every available driver and the E120 was the only one that was suited to task. I did another research process in 2006, and still cannot find anything more suited to task. Where else can one find a sensitivity of 1W/1M and the ability to handle program peaks of 1500W without burning out?
That's awesome! - and really nice that you have a good recording of it also - not that distorted shit that 99% of the other "speaker showing videos" on YouTube have
No. QSC strongly advises against Speakons in bridge mono configs or in configs where the impedance of the load is less than 4 ohms. I chose binding lugs on 8AWG wire.
You have some mighty fine microphones set up, because it sounds superb. My subwoofers are going crazy to those low notes. This is such a perfect selection of music and it great for what you are showing. I just downloaded it and it is great. You have a great system and equipment. Keep it up. :]
Sound is wave transmission through air not are transportation this carpet dance would be far more effective with a leaf blower. We realy need to start at the begining with you don't we
This falls behind Last comment,,,,not displacing air in and out of a box through a hole. Back to my first and only point this demonstration has nothing to do with sound it just demonstration of speaker being pushed out of useful band, end of story. Your resistance to this point in my opinion makes you less qualified to be informing anyone on anything regarding loudspeaker design. Come on Bass pig be wrong and Ill by you a tea next time Im in so cal
Go make yourself a big old drain culvert16hz Band pass box with you big 18s. That will knock your head loose while being less musical than a drunk playing a didgeridoo, though with far more output than your present load. You might even fit it in your basement. Even if tuned true to 16HZ IT WON"T FLAP CARPET because it will be making sound
Go find a vented subwoofer enclosure, put music or a tone on, and put your hand over the port, seee?? Its air, which is "Sound In Motion" (Basspig's description). The same thing is happening here, as the subwoofers receive the electrical signal they create vibrations, which in turn makes AIR!
I never said you used some other source to flap your carpet. I was just pointing out the fact that puff the magic dragon tricks do not make sound. That flapping of the carpet is junk power, simple puffing not resonant energy. If you lay down a 16HZ organ pipe it would make 16HZ but it would not flap your carpet, end of story.
An organ pipe, driven in the customary manner, laid down on the floor would not move the carpet, true, however, an organ pipe, customarily-driven, produces FAR smaller acoustic output than the servo pistons with thousands of watts. Long stroke, with the added benefit of a resonator, produce tremendous output with relatively modest excursion.
(see my video "Bass Pig 16Hz Test, Bassmaxx ZR18s ONLY") (Youtube doesn't post my responses containing the URL, so you'll have to search for it in my home page.)
Please people If your looking for infomation or facts about audio don't look to this gent.Young folks, he with the biggest pile of woofers in his basement does not make him smart. If it was not woofers he have a big pile of cats. His claims are unsupported by most every other viewpoint in audio sicence. If he has so much to give to the audio world he would be doing it above ground and not from his basement, maybe even for a job!
Absolutely. You see, in reality, this whole thing is a fraud and I have a drilled a bunch of holes in the concrete floor and have installed 28 industrial vacuum cleaners in reverse to create this illusion. ;-)
Frankly, I don't want any part of the audio industry. It is fraught with a high number of conceited folks like this one here. I live for my own sake and my projects and inventions are for my consumption. That I share a bit of it online is a sign of my largess. Good day, sir.
The bills topped $500/mo this summer--we had another rate increase. ;-\
Go to the QSC web site and read the specs on power consumption and you will find your answers.
I was one of those folks that didn't trust the Russians (still don't), so I did the prudent thing. You're entitled to your opinion. I would appreciated it if you didn't turn this "forum" into a place of debate & vitriol.
As a longtime reader of Ayn Rand (read Atlas Shrugged in '57) I am very much grounded in reality, thank you.
Bass Pig you dance all about every point I bring up with insane replies I ask you to tell me how a couple of Power lights gulp down your claimed 180 amps. You tell me how you doing such great things in audio. Now to your latest claims of 3 ft concrete walls and $400 a month on your power bill? You have completely lost the plot called reality!
I was visiting your homepage again and I looked at the drawings of your JBL and EV speaker enclosures (very impressive), but then i noticed that you don't have the drawings of those bassmaxx enclosures. Why not? I would love to see the drawings of those enclosures.
The enclosures with the Bassmaxx drivers are not Bassmaxx enclosures. In fact, they were designed for Altec 3184s, originally, in 1982.
This is one of the "to do" list items. A new enclosure design is on the drawing boards. It has to be MUCH larger. The current boxes are way too small to achieve optimum efficiency with these drivers.
How would say the same driver in a front loaded system than in a folded enclosure create distortion? do you mean if the output was more of the speakers rating i.e being over driven? i don't understand what you are saying, i am no acoustic boffin but im interested to hear why you are such against said speaker design, every company i know, bassmax L,acoustics, Martin, JBL, EV, EAW, RCF ,QSC all create these enclosures, why are they so bad then?
Folded horns and any horn-loaded design have their place. Attribute: high efficiency, narrow operating range. The truth is, a practical folded horn that gets down to 16Hz would have to be as large as a house.
For club applications though, you only need a good punch down to 45Hz, and that's where most folded horn designs in their largest commercial implementations go. Even the Bassmaxx. They make great drivers. The horn cabinets have specific applications.
I know Tom Danley and am familiar with his tapped-horn designs. As clever as they are, you cannot violate the laws of physics. That said, he uses smaller drivers, so that the horn is relatively large and can wrap around many times. But then there are problems with group delay and impulse response. And the response is not flat, although it's probably the best of the horn-loaded subs on the pro sound market.
I've never personally heard Danley's subs, but 90% of the time I'd prefer a horn-loaded sub over a direct radiating sub, because they usually have much better transient response and sound much tighter. And as you probably know, any time a subwoofer is inside a room that doesn't have perfect acoustics, it's not going to sound flat anyway, so the response isn't that big of a deal. (Response can be fixed with a processor anyway...same with the delay..)
Audio is dominated by aesthetics, and as such, many audiophiles choose the gear based on a certain 'sound' signature that pleases them. I know a guy who just loves his Altec Voice of the Theater speakers--thinks they're the best-sounding speakers ever built. I heard them and they sounded exactly like a cheap PA system.
My point is, for some types of music, a certain speaker may deliver a pleasing sonic signature. It's largely a matter of personal taste.
This is really cool i can hear everything through my Cans and i even have a DBX sub harmonizer in the way of the signal path so its even louder and the sound is fantastic, these are front loaded cabs and at short range they must take your guts out squeeze them and just leave them on the floor. I'll post a vid soon of out 21" folded subs all 12 of them rattling a poor outdoor festival apart.
The enclosures were built some 25 yeras ago for Altec 3184s. New and MUCH larger enclosures are in on the drawing board for the Bassmaxx woofers. It's a matter of priorities and getting around to building again.
The speakers are folded to become a long thow speaker cab for professional P.A systems for use, I.E outdoor concerts ect, front loaded cabs would never be able to push the air infront of them to create the SPL level needed to throw the sound out to the audience. It's not a horrible enclosure it's a very well designed one. the system is Eq'd with Pink noise to give the cab a flat responce which is controlled by a LCS or such, not the most hi fidelity reproduction i agree.
My subwoofer doesn't like this video. Its hitting maxium excursion at +12-14dB gain spot from my amp! At normal listening i could turn the gain up to +24-28dB before my sub would reach the maxium excursion. But my amplifier wouldn't like that. :-)
And speaking of my amp, its hitting the clip led already at +14dB gain, while wathing this video! This video already destroyed the other speaker of my headphones, and i hope that my subwoofer isn't the next target. :-)
Be careful with the volume levels. Some of the audio goes pretty low and the spectral balance is rather bottom-heavy. Like any hi-fi demo CD, use caution.
It all began in the early 90s when I was designing a super long-throw woofer in a CAD program. FF to 2005, where I found CGN Audio Labs developing something similar to my concept, only with more efficient neo magnets. CGN led me to Bassmaxx. The drivers are used in their larger products and these were prototypes for a more rugged version. Negotiated deal.
My CEL 241 sound level meter only goes to 140dB, so I don't know. 140 is painful enough. Anything over 125 on this meter is too much for my musician friends who complain of chest pains and difficulty breathing.
The T-S parameters for the Bassmaxx drivers state a max SPL of 154dB per driver, but I will never be able to test them at full potential as my 6,000W QSC is driving four of them, well below rated handling capacity.
Motor strength. Premium drivers usually have a higher BL around 25 or higher. TC/Audio Pulse LMS-5400 has a BL of 27.5 Tm and retains linearity up to 30mm and is down to 70% at 38mm. You can find test results of the LMS-5400 at hometheatershack. Impossible to bottom out that driver.
The Soundsplinter RL-P18 which is also made by TC has a BL of 24.25, also impossible to bottom out.
That's a difficult question, because I purchased and constructed components over a 31 year period. I've probably spent at least $20-25K, but in various economies ranging from the 1970s to last year with varied rates of inflation.
I am a very big fan of your magnificent audio system. Unfortunately it would seem the link to contact you on your website is broken :-(
I myself have recently re-designed my listening room to accomodate my custom built bass enclosures, and would love some advice on bandpass enclosure building, however not many people take me seriously because i am only 15. A reply would be most appreciated, although i understand you must be very busy with your work. Kind regards, Jez
Did you try the link at the bottom of the home page? I have been informed that it doesn't work for Hotmail users, but I've only tested with MS Outlook. It's cloaked to prevent spambots, which makes it a bit difficult for compatibility.
The email address is basspig @ the site domain name.
"Busy" would be the understatement of the year. :-)
I cant really imagine the amount of bass you must feel when your listening music. But i gotta say that i got pretty good laughs when i noticed that after watching this video for couple times, other speaker of my headphones littearly BROKE! So if only this video can destroy my headphones, i dont want to think what that whole system can destroy at your home. :-)
Usually, on compact disc recordings that contain dangerous levels of low bass, companies like Telarc would include a warning to the user, stating that playback at high levels may damage system components. I never thought it would be necessary to add such a disclaimer to a YouTube video. :-)
Please tell me some parameters of your Bassmaxx ZR18, I can,t found any information about this subwoofer driver... And can EXV180B play fast bass attack, it must be feel in your chest if it is really fast.
I never got the parameters from BassMaxx. I've asked for them a number of times. The only thing David Lee told me was that the testing lab that was measuring the driver called him up, rather excited, because they calculated the max SPL and it was a number that was completely out of the arena of normal loudspeakers. It was 154dB.
As for the Thiele-Small params, I await those, as I am planning to build optimal cabinets for these. Presently they work well in existing cabinets that were orginally built for Altec 3182s.
As you know, i LOVE your system... but i've got to ask.... what do your neightbors and/or the local earthquake monitoring center think? i know, having that much power and air-mass is about NOT having to push it... but i know you've hit the "skinni pedal" a few times ;) and what kind of SPL's can you reach? in excess of 150?
Just curious...
Im gunna build a system like your's someday.... just have to wait for my rich-uncle in the poor-house to die and leave me his millions :)
Neighbors? What neighbors? :-) This is rural country and one of the things about living on a mountaintop is that only the hardy dare to build up here, as it's treacherous to reach this location in the winter time.
My SPL measuring tool only goes to 140dB, so I have to estimate based on distance. For instance, on the 16Hz test, the nearfield SPL must have been over 150dB when the carpet became airborne. I was measuring 133dB from 30' away.
When my father passed, he left me with $80,000 in DEBTS. I had to make money the old-fashioned way... by EARNING it. I pulled many 80-hour weeks in the 70s, so I could save up for each component. :-)
And how the HELL can you listen music so loud?! Thats 12,000w of power and 10 x 18" woofers! :S I have a "poor" 12" subwoofer and 400w power amplifier. I dont have to even turn the volumes to half way and the whole room is shaking like hell.
It's about headroom. I play back pyrotechnic recordings, which call for instantaneous SPLs in excess of 150dB. Music, however, rarely even lights "signal present" LEDs on the QSCs.
It's not about loud, so much as accuracy. Music is just one of many sound sources. I play a lot with pyrotechnics sound effects and need to reproduce the infrasound of a helicopter rotor beating against the air, or a cannon exploding. These sounds are MUCH louder than music, and for that, comes the necessity to do these kinds of SPLs.
Thank you very much! I wish that i would have enough money to buy one or two EVX180B's or even bassmaxx ZR-18's. Guess i have to wait, wait and wait to get enough cash. :)
In the cabinets they are in now, I measured a -3dB point at 16Hz on the EVX. Normally, EVX drivers in commercial installations are not LLT configuration, so they roll off at 45Hz -10dB. The Bassmaxx carry it the rest of the way down, but not to 0. That would be DC.
I see that you use Electro-Voice EVX180B subs in the mid-bass area. Im just thinking that why did you get 18" woofers for mid-bass area? I have heard, that large speakers aren't so good in the mid-bass area, because they dont have so much "punch" as smaller, like 8-10" woofers.
There are a lot of misconceptions about "speed" of woofers. The short version of it is that the EXV180Bs go high enough to effectively cross into the E120s and that their impulse response is very good for an 18". Smaller drivers would have required 32 or more to achieve the SPL levels down to 25Hz.
I'm not at liberty to make public the cost, as it was a private deal on "demo" units. The price was reasonable, and even if the retail price was double that, it would still be a great value. Your best bet is to talk to David Lee at BassMaxx Technology and be patient--I had to wait 6 months for these drivers to finish their touring in the AZ desert "rave" tours before I received them. But it was well worth the wait.
From BassMaxx Technology, Inc. They don't normally sell raw drivers, but I know the president of the company and we made a deal last year that I would by four prototype drivers after they were done touring.
Most of them are pro sound reinforcement drivers. The Bassmaxx in particular were designed to make you feel 20Hz across a football stadium. So, yes, they could be called sound reinforcement drivers, definately not intended for home use.
i was visiting your website and i think i saw that you have 3 or 4 equalizers. Why do you need so many equalizers, or is there just something wrong with my eyes :)
A lot of those aren't even hooked up anymore. The Spectro-Acoustics used to do room correction for the delay channel in the rear of the room. The Techniques is still used to preemphasize highs, where I deemphasize them at the crossover (noise reduction measure). The ADC is my creative EQ. Soon to be replaced.
That's a very interesting question. Because when I first shot it on DV tape, the tape was unplayable due to block errors, probably due to mistracking. So I captured to HD directly from firewire on the second try and that worked. But we did have some problems with line voltage sag, due to weak neutral wiring from building to pole. I fixed that in February and it's much improved now.
The E-Vs have a crossover at 140Hz and the Bassmaxx have a crossover at 80Hz. That's the most common profile. I have multiple profiles for different kinds of listening situations, and the crossovers vary slightly from profile to profile.
Actually, what you see here is a small fraction of the excursion capability of the driver. I tested this driver free air and got 3X the stroke you see here. This is a relatively low power test.
I don't think so. I traced the problem to a bad ground outside the house. Electrician used 4awg wire from the house to the pole. I used 3/0awg wire inside the house from the panel to the meter box. Took me a long time to figure out where the voltage sag was happening.
I just noticed that my pc subwoofer was doing crazy excursion while watching this video. I didn't notice that before. So I was a little bit scared :) . But it's a very cool system you have.
Yes, it's quite sharp. Since the average human eye can discern a complete light to dark transition in 2 arc minutes of angle, that puts a 50" screen at 6' as the max distance. Any larger screen and more pixels are needed. That said, SD looks amazing on my Oppo DV981HD upscaling DVD player.
yes, zr18s would be a little too much. plus theyre only subwoofers with no tweeters. now, the only thing you need is either a big tv or a projection screen.
I did fix the TV problem earlier this month, with a flat panel display, full 1080P native resolution. Ideal would be a $60K Barco projector onto a 10' wide screen, in front of the main speaker array. The panel is a quick way to get some decent images.
Since the surround channels are mostly for movie playback and the occasional orchestra recording I make and play back for clients, they don't need to be that fantastic, but they do need to have the same characteristics above 100Hz so that the timbre of the sound won't change when a sound moves from front to back. Right now, I'm using my Dynaudio-retrofitted AR17s as surround channels. They work surprisingly well.
I plan to in the near future. I'm in the process of upgrading the video system and adding some surround sound channels. Lots of rewiring and some additional speakers being added.
I think, that "infrasound: shaking" and " sub walkabout" are the best... And you can watch another if you click on my accound. There are another excursion videos. And watch "my big subwoofer playing " more then 120 Db!
Remember me? :))) I promised to create the video of my hand-made system which creation was inspired by your system. I am only russian student and havn't good money for best components but here is the result:
"infrasound: shaking", "huge excursion" "my sub walkabout" and "big powerful sub". There are titles of my video. I've made them by just digital photocamera, sorry for quality. If you'll look I'll be wery glad. :)))
I don't think so, at least not for the power factor-corrected QSC amplifiers--they perform consistently even on sagging AC lines, which are a problem at many outdoor rock concerts. The Haflers are not regulated supplies though, so they would depend on their storage caps to ride out the 'brownouts'.
wow, that's what good sound system should sound like. When i see other bass videos, i just hear boom boom, and because of that boom you can't really hear the vocals, so 5 stars man.
Interestingly enough, when I play a recording of a symphony orchestra on this system, it sounds just like the orchestra I recorded earlier that night. It's called "High Fidelity".
Cost? That's hard to calculate, since I started building this system in 1976. This summer I put about six grand into it. Each of the QSC amps lists for about $5895. The speaker array alone is custom built, so equivalent value is a wild guess anywhere between $10K on the low end to over $60K on the higher end.
I've listen it on 2/3 of volume... The window and the wall which is more than 50 sm trickness moved so hardly that my tree on the window was jumping and some things fall down, seiling in bathroom was ringing. Around 130 db. It is the most powerful bass music which I've listen. I'll made some video of destruction sound with this music playing....
They are also 180Bs. Six in total. Four Bassmaxx ZR18s and the mids are JBL E120s, the most efficient 12" driver ever built. Too bad they're no longer being made. The subwoofer shootout in New York City just finished up this week with Bassmaxx so far in the lead that when the Bassmaxx subs were being tested, it shook an apartment building ACROSS THE STREET and the tenants on the 5th floor of that building complained. Amazing!
As stated in his video description, he is using a separate set of microphones for the sound recording. Regardless, this is an absolutely amazing sound system, the quality of this recording is exceptional (for a youtube video). I find myself playing this video over and over just so I can hear that song on my system. How did you go about acquiring that song?
What good is a sound system if you can't hear ALL the music? Albeit, this Korean disc was bass-heavy and clipped (verified in SoundForge that the kick drum is clipped). But oh, that 8-string bass guitar sounds so sweet..
lol i ment usualy if your videoing massive bass the mic cuts out all the vocals. maybe hes just got a decent cam, looks like he has the muney to afford one!
Since there is something wrong with this site that prevents me from replying to black9999x, I'm putting it here: Actually the Eminent Technology woofer has a maximum output of 115dB, but they only specify the distortion at 90dB, which is 3%, according to their web site. My Bassmaxx woofers have less than 0.4% distortion with 1,000W input and at that power level the SPLs are in the 140dB range at 20Hz. This TRW woofer is a clever gimmick, but a gimmick indeed.
Yea it's a godness system. I'm bass maniac like you but I'll make system of close level in the future, around 10 years because now I have just big dreams but I'm only Russian student. This system can be something like ideal for me. It's great.
Wow, when I watching this my ears closely breaking by wery low bass! I have system with 3000 w sub which respounce is linear at 15-100 hz and have such pressure and what is going on in that room... 6000 w and more than four 18" I can't imagine. But it's too much bass for such musik. Tone disbalance or uncorrect sound in video because the cam isn't perfect isn't it?
@hampe902 Thanks. That's very helpful information. I found a whole listing of lyrics for the album just Googling that title. The lyrics are in romanized Korean (phonetic), so still a mystery though.

But then of course - if it's your own recording, it probably have a lot more bass than commersially mixed music (even in case your recording mics is not flat ether)
C20rules 1 year ago
@C20rules
C20rules 1 year ago
haha i like how the lights dim when it hits. purty funny if i do say so lol, sum1 needs to big 3 their house
lilhoede1990 1 year ago
@lilhoede1990 The lights dim when I switch on a PC, too. At the time this video was taken, we had a problem with an undersized neutral wire. I ran a parallel wire in 2008 and it's much better on maintaining line voltage now.
basspig 1 year ago
Do you remember how much was the SPL during this video?
Tenho123 2 years ago
Probably in the mid-130's--I had to walk around with a tape-based camcorder and didn't have any ear protection, so this was a low power test.
basspig 2 years ago
But is that power handling necessary? You really play that loud? And what about sound quality of the E120?
Tenho123 2 years ago
Necessary for whom? :-) In my case, yes, as it has to carry the entire mid/top end for all those woofers. It's still about 15-18dB below the woofer output, so the mids will run out of gas long before the bottom end, but considering the bass-heavy balance of modern music, this works out about right. The peak power is in reserve for pyrotechnic events like explosions and gunshots and is not normally used with music program. Most music is 40dB below that level.
Sound quality is excellent.
basspig 2 years ago
I've got to ask; Why JBL E120? Isn't it some kind of guitar speaker?
Tenho123 2 years ago
When I moved away from horn drivers in 1982, I needed something that would provide similar efficiency, yet have the ability to be linearized through careful baffle design. I looked at every available driver and the E120 was the only one that was suited to task. I did another research process in 2006, and still cannot find anything more suited to task. Where else can one find a sensitivity of 1W/1M and the ability to handle program peaks of 1500W without burning out?
basspig 2 years ago
Are you using any equalisation with these subs?
Tenho123 2 years ago
Several bandpass filters to dip certain room modes, but otherwise nothing else.
basspig 2 years ago
That's awesome! - and really nice that you have a good recording of it also - not that distorted shit that 99% of the other "speaker showing videos" on YouTube have
C20rules 2 years ago
do you use speakon plugs to connect the cabinets to the amplifiers
rotel1080man 2 years ago
No. QSC strongly advises against Speakons in bridge mono configs or in configs where the impedance of the load is less than 4 ohms. I chose binding lugs on 8AWG wire.
basspig 2 years ago
so in other words they are binding posts
rotel1080man 2 years ago
Binding posts, yes. NEMA Class 4 wiring is required for speakers in this type of operation.

Come on Bass pig be wrong and Ill by you a tea next time Im in so cal
glass29tractor 3 years ago
Wrong again. No sound, no air movement.
The speakers are very much in their useful band, as the undistorted output during this test was high enough to shake the ground outside the building.
BTW, I prefer Gevalia Kaffe. Tea is too lacking in substance for my tastes.
basspig 3 years ago
Go make yourself a big old drain culvert16hz Band pass box with you big 18s. That will knock your head loose while being less musical than a drunk playing a didgeridoo, though with far more output than your present load. You might even fit it in your basement. Even if tuned true to 16HZ IT WON"T FLAP CARPET because it will be making sound
far2muchtimeonh 3 years ago
Do you realize that you just contradicted yourself? Sound is air in motion. So if there is no sound, then there is no air movement.
I don't know why I bother wasting my time trying to explain the most basic physics to you self-professed know-it-alls.
basspig 3 years ago
Go find a vented subwoofer enclosure, put music or a tone on, and put your hand over the port, seee?? Its air, which is "Sound In Motion" (Basspig's description). The same thing is happening here, as the subwoofers receive the electrical signal they create vibrations, which in turn makes AIR!
djspazzin 3 years ago
I never said you used some other source to flap your carpet. I was just pointing out the fact that puff the magic dragon tricks do not make sound. That flapping of the carpet is junk power, simple puffing not resonant energy. If you lay down a 16HZ organ pipe it would make 16HZ but it would not flap your carpet, end of story.
glass29tractor 3 years ago
An organ pipe, driven in the customary manner, laid down on the floor would not move the carpet, true, however, an organ pipe, customarily-driven, produces FAR smaller acoustic output than the servo pistons with thousands of watts. Long stroke, with the added benefit of a resonator, produce tremendous output with relatively modest excursion.
Where is puff the magic dragon in this video:

I was visiting your homepage again and I looked at the drawings of your JBL and EV speaker enclosures (very impressive), but then i noticed that you don't have the drawings of those bassmaxx enclosures. Why not? I would love to see the drawings of those enclosures.
Tenho123 3 years ago
The enclosures with the Bassmaxx drivers are not Bassmaxx enclosures. In fact, they were designed for Altec 3184s, originally, in 1982.
This is one of the "to do" list items. A new enclosure design is on the drawing boards. It has to be MUCH larger. The current boxes are way too small to achieve optimum efficiency with these drivers.
basspig 3 years ago
How would say the same driver in a front loaded system than in a folded enclosure create distortion? do you mean if the output was more of the speakers rating i.e being over driven? i don't understand what you are saying, i am no acoustic boffin but im interested to hear why you are such against said speaker design, every company i know, bassmax L,acoustics, Martin, JBL, EV, EAW, RCF ,QSC all create these enclosures, why are they so bad then?
Markaca112 3 years ago
Folded horns and any horn-loaded design have their place. Attribute: high efficiency, narrow operating range. The truth is, a practical folded horn that gets down to 16Hz would have to be as large as a house.
For club applications though, you only need a good punch down to 45Hz, and that's where most folded horn designs in their largest commercial implementations go. Even the Bassmaxx. They make great drivers. The horn cabinets have specific applications.
basspig 3 years ago
Danley Sound Labs makes a folded horn sub that gets down to 16 hz that is only 87.5inx18inx20in.
Mikael81491 3 years ago
I know Tom Danley and am familiar with his tapped-horn designs. As clever as they are, you cannot violate the laws of physics. That said, he uses smaller drivers, so that the horn is relatively large and can wrap around many times. But then there are problems with group delay and impulse response. And the response is not flat, although it's probably the best of the horn-loaded subs on the pro sound market.
basspig 3 years ago
I've never personally heard Danley's subs, but 90% of the time I'd prefer a horn-loaded sub over a direct radiating sub, because they usually have much better transient response and sound much tighter. And as you probably know, any time a subwoofer is inside a room that doesn't have perfect acoustics, it's not going to sound flat anyway, so the response isn't that big of a deal. (Response can be fixed with a processor anyway...same with the delay..)
Mikael81491 3 years ago
Audio is dominated by aesthetics, and as such, many audiophiles choose the gear based on a certain 'sound' signature that pleases them. I know a guy who just loves his Altec Voice of the Theater speakers--thinks they're the best-sounding speakers ever built. I heard them and they sounded exactly like a cheap PA system.
My point is, for some types of music, a certain speaker may deliver a pleasing sonic signature. It's largely a matter of personal taste.
I have to disagree about horns though.
basspig 3 years ago
This is really cool i can hear everything through my Cans and i even have a DBX sub harmonizer in the way of the signal path so its even louder and the sound is fantastic, these are front loaded cabs and at short range they must take your guts out squeeze them and just leave them on the floor. I'll post a vid soon of out 21" folded subs all 12 of them rattling a poor outdoor festival apart.
Markaca112 3 years ago
Why would any decent driver be put in such a horrible enclosure type?
Folded.. Yuck.
spezzy 3 years ago
The enclosures were built some 25 yeras ago for Altec 3184s. New and MUCH larger enclosures are in on the drawing board for the Bassmaxx woofers. It's a matter of priorities and getting around to building again.
basspig 3 years ago
Wasn't referring to your enclosures bass pig. Was talking about Markaca and folded horns.
spezzy 3 years ago
OIC. Been there. Done that too. (FHs)
basspig 3 years ago
The speakers are folded to become a long thow speaker cab for professional P.A systems for use, I.E outdoor concerts ect, front loaded cabs would never be able to push the air infront of them to create the SPL level needed to throw the sound out to the audience. It's not a horrible enclosure it's a very well designed one. the system is Eq'd with Pink noise to give the cab a flat responce which is controlled by a LCS or such, not the most hi fidelity reproduction i agree.
Markaca112 3 years ago
I for one wouldn't give an audience 200% distortion from any frequency below tuning point of such a cab, as well as above in some cases.
spezzy 3 years ago
do you have a msn or somethhing like that? would love to have a chat with u some day :D

Tenho123 4 years ago
Be careful with the volume levels. Some of the audio goes pretty low and the spectral balance is rather bottom-heavy. Like any hi-fi demo CD, use caution.
basspig 4 years ago
What is the lowest frequency that these bassmaxx woofers can play in your system?
Tenho123 4 years ago
How did you get the idea to buy those bassmaxx woofers? They dont even mention anything about that woofer at their homesite.
Tenho123 4 years ago
It all began in the early 90s when I was designing a super long-throw woofer in a CAD program. FF to 2005, where I found CGN Audio Labs developing something similar to my concept, only with more efficient neo magnets. CGN led me to Bassmaxx. The drivers are used in their larger products and these were prototypes for a more rugged version. Negotiated deal.
basspig 4 years ago
lmao now you just needa bigger tv... how much yoru system cost you? with all your electronics etc?
viacake 4 years ago
That's as big as it's going to get for a while. Until major architectural renovation makes possible a projection screen.
System components have changed over the years and I haven't kept track of the electronics cost. Probably $15-18K over the past 30 years.
basspig 4 years ago
What is the biggest SPL result you have ever had with this system?
Tenho123 4 years ago
My CEL 241 sound level meter only goes to 140dB, so I don't know. 140 is painful enough. Anything over 125 on this meter is too much for my musician friends who complain of chest pains and difficulty breathing.
The T-S parameters for the Bassmaxx drivers state a max SPL of 154dB per driver, but I will never be able to test them at full potential as my 6,000W QSC is driving four of them, well below rated handling capacity.
basspig 4 years ago
154dB PER driver, lol! What do you think, does this system have the power to go 170dB or even more..?
Tenho123 4 years ago
Every doubling of driver results in a 6db increase.
Ex. 1x driver will do 154db. 2x drivers will do 160db. 4x drivers will do 166db.
A 154db max spl rating you say? At what frequency?
What is the BL of the driver and xmech, as well as xmax?
spezzy 4 years ago
whats BL?
rowanlloyd 4 years ago
Motor strength. Premium drivers usually have a higher BL around 25 or higher. TC/Audio Pulse LMS-5400 has a BL of 27.5 Tm and retains linearity up to 30mm and is down to 70% at 38mm. You can find test results of the LMS-5400 at hometheatershack. Impossible to bottom out that driver.
The Soundsplinter RL-P18 which is also made by TC has a BL of 24.25, also impossible to bottom out.
spezzy 4 years ago
ah thanks. what does the B and the L stand for tho?
rowanlloyd 4 years ago
No clue really. Just know it's measured in TS (Tesla Meters).
spezzy 4 years ago
B is the "field" strength in the motor, and L is the wire length on the coil.
SSat155 4 years ago
Thank you for that :]
spezzy 4 years ago
wow thankyou very much!

how mutch did that system cost you?
37474748 4 years ago
That's a difficult question, because I purchased and constructed components over a 31 year period. I've probably spent at least $20-25K, but in various economies ranging from the 1970s to last year with varied rates of inflation.
basspig 4 years ago

I cant really imagine the amount of bass you must feel when your listening music. But i gotta say that i got pretty good laughs when i noticed that after watching this video for couple times, other speaker of my headphones littearly BROKE! So if only this video can destroy my headphones, i dont want to think what that whole system can destroy at your home. :-)
Tenho123 4 years ago
Usually, on compact disc recordings that contain dangerous levels of low bass, companies like Telarc would include a warning to the user, stating that playback at high levels may damage system components. I never thought it would be necessary to add such a disclaimer to a YouTube video. :-)
basspig 4 years ago
Please tell me some parameters of your Bassmaxx ZR18, I can,t found any information about this subwoofer driver... And can EXV180B play fast bass attack, it must be feel in your chest if it is really fast.
1u2ra3gan 4 years ago
I never got the parameters from BassMaxx. I've asked for them a number of times. The only thing David Lee told me was that the testing lab that was measuring the driver called him up, rather excited, because they calculated the max SPL and it was a number that was completely out of the arena of normal loudspeakers. It was 154dB.
basspig 4 years ago
As for the Thiele-Small params, I await those, as I am planning to build optimal cabinets for these. Presently they work well in existing cabinets that were orginally built for Altec 3182s.
basspig 4 years ago
As you know, i LOVE your system... but i've got to ask.... what do your neightbors and/or the local earthquake monitoring center think? i know, having that much power and air-mass is about NOT having to push it... but i know you've hit the "skinni pedal" a few times ;) and what kind of SPL's can you reach? in excess of 150?
Just curious...
Im gunna build a system like your's someday.... just have to wait for my rich-uncle in the poor-house to die and leave me his millions :)
Geeky907 4 years ago
Neighbors? What neighbors? :-) This is rural country and one of the things about living on a mountaintop is that only the hardy dare to build up here, as it's treacherous to reach this location in the winter time.
basspig 4 years ago
My SPL measuring tool only goes to 140dB, so I have to estimate based on distance. For instance, on the 16Hz test, the nearfield SPL must have been over 150dB when the carpet became airborne. I was measuring 133dB from 30' away.
When my father passed, he left me with $80,000 in DEBTS. I had to make money the old-fashioned way... by EARNING it. I pulled many 80-hour weeks in the 70s, so I could save up for each component. :-)
basspig 4 years ago
And how the HELL can you listen music so loud?! Thats 12,000w of power and 10 x 18" woofers! :S I have a "poor" 12" subwoofer and 400w power amplifier. I dont have to even turn the volumes to half way and the whole room is shaking like hell.
Tenho123 4 years ago
It's about headroom. I play back pyrotechnic recordings, which call for instantaneous SPLs in excess of 150dB. Music, however, rarely even lights "signal present" LEDs on the QSCs.
basspig 4 years ago
This has been flagged as spam show
It's not about loud, so much as accuracy. Music is just one of many sound sources. I play a lot with pyrotechnics sound effects and need to reproduce the infrasound of a helicopter rotor beating against the air, or a cannon exploding. These sounds are MUCH louder than music, and for that, comes the necessity to do these kinds of SPLs.
basspig 4 years ago
Thank you very much! I wish that i would have enough money to buy one or two EVX180B's or even bassmaxx ZR-18's. Guess i have to wait, wait and wait to get enough cash. :)

Tenho123 4 years ago
basspig 4 years ago
So EXV180Bs go as down as 25hz and bassmaxx woofers "continue" the sound from 25hz to 0?
Tenho123 4 years ago
In the cabinets they are in now, I measured a -3dB point at 16Hz on the EVX. Normally, EVX drivers in commercial installations are not LLT configuration, so they roll off at 45Hz -10dB. The Bassmaxx carry it the rest of the way down, but not to 0. That would be DC.
basspig 4 years ago
I see that you use Electro-Voice EVX180B subs in the mid-bass area. Im just thinking that why did you get 18" woofers for mid-bass area? I have heard, that large speakers aren't so good in the mid-bass area, because they dont have so much "punch" as smaller, like 8-10" woofers.
Tenho123 4 years ago
There are a lot of misconceptions about "speed" of woofers. The short version of it is that the EXV180Bs go high enough to effectively cross into the E120s and that their impulse response is very good for an 18". Smaller drivers would have required 32 or more to achieve the SPL levels down to 25Hz.
basspig 4 years ago
Ok nice. How about the price? How much did 1 bassmaxx sub cost?
Tenho123 4 years ago
I'm not at liberty to make public the cost, as it was a private deal on "demo" units. The price was reasonable, and even if the retail price was double that, it would still be a great value. Your best bet is to talk to David Lee at BassMaxx Technology and be patient--I had to wait 6 months for these drivers to finish their touring in the AZ desert "rave" tours before I received them. But it was well worth the wait.
basspig 4 years ago
Where did you get those Bassmaxx woofers?
Tenho123 4 years ago
From BassMaxx Technology, Inc. They don't normally sell raw drivers, but I know the president of the company and we made a deal last year that I would by four prototype drivers after they were done touring.
basspig 4 years ago
Are those subwoofers so called "pa-speakers"? Or just amazingly powerful "home speakers"? =D
Tenho123 4 years ago
Most of them are pro sound reinforcement drivers. The Bassmaxx in particular were designed to make you feel 20Hz across a football stadium. So, yes, they could be called sound reinforcement drivers, definately not intended for home use.
basspig 4 years ago
How big are those speaker boxes?
Tenho123 4 years ago
7, 16 and 20 cubic feet, respectively.
basspig 4 years ago
i was visiting your website and i think i saw that you have 3 or 4 equalizers. Why do you need so many equalizers, or is there just something wrong with my eyes :)
Tenho123 4 years ago
A lot of those aren't even hooked up anymore. The Spectro-Acoustics used to do room correction for the delay channel in the rear of the room. The Techniques is still used to preemphasize highs, where I deemphasize them at the crossover (noise reduction measure). The ADC is my creative EQ. Soon to be replaced.
basspig 4 years ago
That is definitely impressive. Is that the camera flickering with the kick-drum hits?
theInqusition 4 years ago
That's a very interesting question. Because when I first shot it on DV tape, the tape was unplayable due to block errors, probably due to mistracking. So I captured to HD directly from firewire on the second try and that worked. But we did have some problems with line voltage sag, due to weak neutral wiring from building to pole. I fixed that in February and it's much improved now.
basspig 4 years ago
what tuning have your crossover for those subs?
Tenho123 4 years ago
The E-Vs have a crossover at 140Hz and the Bassmaxx have a crossover at 80Hz. That's the most common profile. I have multiple profiles for different kinds of listening situations, and the crossovers vary slightly from profile to profile.

I've promice - Excursion video with wery good quality. sub BIG excursion and BIG excursion 2.
And what tuning have your subs?
sub BIG excursion
1u2ra3gan 4 years ago
Actually, what you see here is a small fraction of the excursion capability of the driver. I tested this driver free air and got 3X the stroke you see here. This is a relatively low power test.
Tuning is at 14Hz.
basspig 4 years ago
Yea but I talk abount 2 my videos for you "sub Big excurtion". Enjoy
1u2ra3gan 4 years ago
I don't think so. I traced the problem to a bad ground outside the house. Electrician used 4awg wire from the house to the pole. I used 3/0awg wire inside the house from the panel to the meter box. Took me a long time to figure out where the voltage sag was happening.
basspig 4 years ago
I just noticed that my pc subwoofer was doing crazy excursion while watching this video. I didn't notice that before. So I was a little bit scared :) . But it's a very cool system you have.

my uncle has a 136 inch custom screen. i almost think its too big. but 1080p flat panel must be pretty cool.
pizzaisgood14 4 years ago
Yes, it's quite sharp. Since the average human eye can discern a complete light to dark transition in 2 arc minutes of angle, that puts a 50" screen at 6' as the max distance. Any larger screen and more pixels are needed. That said, SD looks amazing on my Oppo DV981HD upscaling DVD player.
basspig 4 years ago
yes, zr18s would be a little too much. plus theyre only subwoofers with no tweeters. now, the only thing you need is either a big tv or a projection screen.
pizzaisgood14 4 years ago
I did fix the TV problem earlier this month, with a flat panel display, full 1080P native resolution. Ideal would be a $60K Barco projector onto a 10' wide screen, in front of the main speaker array. The panel is a quick way to get some decent images.
basspig 4 years ago
what are you planning to use for the suurounds. more zr18!!
pizzaisgood14 4 years ago
Since the surround channels are mostly for movie playback and the occasional orchestra recording I make and play back for clients, they don't need to be that fantastic, but they do need to have the same characteristics above 100Hz so that the timbre of the sound won't change when a sound moves from front to back. Right now, I'm using my Dynaudio-retrofitted AR17s as surround channels. They work surprisingly well.

you should make more videos of this system

Watched them. The last one had decent sound. The excursion video was too dark to make out much of anything.

Is the elec. line to your house bad enough to have an effect on your system when turned up a little more than in that video?
djg320 5 years ago
I don't think so, at least not for the power factor-corrected QSC amplifiers--they perform consistently even on sagging AC lines, which are a problem at many outdoor rock concerts. The Haflers are not regulated supplies though, so they would depend on their storage caps to ride out the 'brownouts'.

We have a weak neutral line to the house. Heck the lights dim when I switch on a television set. Rural power for ya...
basspig 5 years ago
when the bass hits the camera & lights go slightly dim.. your sucking too much power from the walls man...
madjimms 5 years ago
wow, that's what good sound system should sound like. When i see other bass videos, i just hear boom boom, and because of that boom you can't really hear the vocals, so 5 stars man.
Btw, how much did it all cost to you?
xxl606 5 years ago

Nice EVX180B's. But what are the smaller subs At the bottom closest to the tv? and what are the speakers at the top closest to the tv???
radiator22 5 years ago

How did you go about acquiring that song?
djg320 5 years ago
i would expect that to be bassyer...i mean u can still hear the vocals...its good for old stuff tho
barevids 5 years ago
What good is a sound system if you can't hear ALL the music? Albeit, this Korean disc was bass-heavy and clipped (verified in SoundForge that the kick drum is clipped). But oh, that 8-string bass guitar sounds so sweet..
basspig 5 years ago
LOL its a good system if you can still here the vocals you idiot
jasonedgin4 5 years ago
lol i ment usualy if your videoing massive bass the mic cuts out all the vocals. maybe hes just got a decent cam, looks like he has the muney to afford one!
barevids 5 years ago
lol Sam, he has 10 18s on 12,000 watts, hitting 140dB!!! And he used seperate microphones...

It's great.
1u2ra3gan 5 years ago
Wow, when I watching this my ears closely breaking by wery low bass! I have system with 3000 w sub which respounce is linear at 15-100 hz and have such pressure and what is going on in that room... 6000 w and more than four 18" I can't imagine. But it's too much bass for such musik. Tone disbalance or uncorrect sound in video because the cam isn't perfect isn't it?
1u2ra3gan 5 years ago
The song is very bass-heavy. It's a Korean recording, so I guess they mix it that way.
Actually 12,000 watts on bass. :-)
