Jesse I am sorry that you haven't gotten over this. At 10 I ran away from a summer camp when a councilor blew-up a huge red balloon and wanted me to pop it. It took them hours for them to find me up a tree at 12am. At 11 my cousin forced me to deal with it. He popped 11 helium ones. by the 7thballoon I felt his excitement, and really got into it.I am 33 and love popping balloons still. Good luck. I still remember your pain.
