kvanvelz, everyone has different painting methods. Not everyone uses the same art style. You think those paintings with random paint streaks and blotches are amazing? My 7 year old could do that.

The "my 7 year old could do that" mentality is sorta outdated. This mentality comes from our innate hatred of things we dont understand. Have a look at Piet Mondrian's "Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow" It's just blocks of color but he's saying that essentially all paintings are combinations of red yellow and blue, the primaries, and this was back in the 30s. Abstract art is often more than meets the eye, and requires more complex thought than a 7 year old can manage.

I dunno if he's just using this as an example or if he painted it or what but... This looks like a children's book illustration. Not that there's anything wrong with it... to each his own form but.. I wouldn't paint like that if my life depended on it. Be bold. Actually put paint on your board or canvas or whatever. This guy would be better off with watercolor.

Never use black alone unless making gray tones! Use deep purple or brown hues. For a true impressionist painting, I would use a flat #4,or 6 bristle on a canvas that size with smaller strokes. Never blend colors!, Break them up, daub them on, and viewed at a distance, the eye will do the blending for you. Otherwise it will look like a child's coloring book!
