definitely want to hear some more! what are some various "levels of sponsorship"? contingency (pay if you win) vs. salary (pay no matter what). where to network (paddock, message board, men's room?).
I like these videos, well worth the watch and make a good alternative side to the driving videos....if you link them together it all becomes far more entertaining and informative than the likes of Top Gear...Keep up the good work :)
With all this exposure, you should totally get back in to racing Leo. You'll be kept up to date, talk about recent experiences (good or bad), advertise your show, get more sponsors, list goes on. Time is an issue but so low level low key might be good for you and your goals. Just an idea...
Words and a studio vs road trips and car testing huh? Well I don't know about everyone else on here but it's Leo's personality that keeps me watching shakedown.
Thanks for the info. Last week I sent out 3 requests for sponsorship. Heard back from one. after a but of back and forth, they decided not to sponsor me. Said I needed to be ranked better.
Also share the online seminar recording that John Doonan did. He, Jim Jordan and Dean Case who run Mazdaspeed Motorsports did a whole seminar for drivers on how the business side of racing works. (part of their ladder system) I have always suspected he did it to raise the quality of proposals he was receiving. ;) But he raised the water level in the industry as a result. I think the one I heard was from the '08 or '09 PRI show.

@OurCognitiveSurplus It shows the rescue teams where the fire extingisher activation is located. You will see a lightning bolt where the electrical cut off is located as well.
@jdoggny Ah, thank you - this is very helpful. I'm trying to get the correct stickers in place on my track car. Blue triangle for the battery location; don't need the lightning bolt because I don't have a remote cut off. Tow points are obvious. The red 'E' was killing me.
So it just goes on the window closest to the extinguisher controls? Thanks :)
I've been watching you for a few years now Leo and I've noticed something weird, You and my Father (Who's 50, so probably a bit older than you) see to get more and more alike. Are you secretly my Uncle?
Love the show. I'd like to see Shakedown University as a seperate weekly show, I'm still getting my head around the new set up but loving extra Shakedown.
Hi Leo, this is great stuff but i would imagine that most of the racer audience here are more likely to be in some form of amateur or small racing series, which means there is no way you will get any kind of outside sponsorship. The only form of sponsorship i've seen so far is discount of parts and equipment within your small racing community, what sort of sponsors should you be going after if you are in a small racing community?
Another outstanding video. Its hard to find real deal information on the internet about topics like this these days. As an aspiring racer I'm always looking for advice from those who "really" know. My question would be what should expect from a sponsor? Some are logical, like a paint job from a local shop, but would a local financial business be willing to buy tires or fuel? Or is the answer "it depends?" I only race at the club level but it costs so much that its hard to keep racing.
About relationships, specifically Penske. I remember reading somewhere that Roger Penske was on the board of directors for Mobil (nowExxonMobil), Philip Morris (Marlboro), and Miller Brewing. Of course all three have been long-time major sponsors of Penske cars.
I also wonder whether he still has any relationship with Detroit Diesel as Leo mentioned, since Penske Corp. sold DD to DaimlerChrysler (now Daimler AG).
I've had never heard of Leo before. I like the guy, he knows what he's talking about. Keep up the good work. He's much MUCH better than alot of "car guys" you see having their shows on TV.
try giving a random interesting fact about cars at the end of the show. for example "did you know Renault was the first formula 1 team to introduce turbocharge engines in F1?"
I enjoyed every episode of Shakedown on Drive so far Leo, and weirdly enough your jokes are not funny but still entertaining to hear. you got my respect.
@LeoParente That's what I figured. I don't know if there is room for this in the budget, but I think your show would benefit from animated graphics (a la Adobe After Effects) to describe the technical stuff. For example, if you're discussing aero you could have 3D renderings of downforce. If you've ever seen that terrible show num3ers on CBS, you'll know what I'm talking about when the character goes on a math rampage. This would complement your fast and to the point speaking style.
here's why i dislike: The guy is probably a good writing (if he's writing his own sets) however, definitely not a tv personality. Simply not entertaining. Has nothing to do with his age, more his demeanor.
@2hondafreaks Thanks. That would be a good show. Before track racing, I did that, too. Def could be worth going back to take a look - in car / in competition, sharing advice we find at the event.
@LeoParente Ok I'm humbled! You guys really do read viewer feedback. Leo keep up the great work! Maybe another channel for people wanting to get into racing?
You're perhaps too modest Leo. "Stuff I kinda know"? Does that mean you know "little" about sportscar racing, F1 and, in general, RACING? Come now... The main reason Shakedown got to me is your insight and opinions, thorough and unbiased (except when Danica is the subject, but no problems there :D), Shakedown U is really cool and I appreciate it, but let's leave it as "special episodes", will you? racing news and opinion matters most to me. PS. next time, bring the scotch.
Leo, I don't think you realize that there is nothing like this online. What I mean is that it's great to have someone breakdown this information. May not be important to the average car guy but it means a lot to someone looking to start racing.
Talk about burning bridges.... I remember after blowing up his engine in the Cleveland Grand Prix, Robby Gordon jumped and kicked the Blue Ford Oval logo on the side of his car.
Shakedown is easily the best Motorsport YouTube show, please do more technical stuff, it's brilliant when you go into a bit of detail. Also more live shows like you did for Le Mans 24 last year.
I have a question about this topic. I read a lot about "pay drivers" in F1, from what I understand that drivers have to find sponsors for the teams, but they also get payed by the team to drive, so do (the less famous) F1 drivers actually make money from the constructors or do they just take a pay cut from their sponsors?
Joked to my friends about hitting up the local public transport co. for sponsorship for club level comps under the sell that you don't need a road car. Use public, save your dollars and spend them on a cheap track day car. The sell is to all the people who wish they could race rather than those who already are. So you'd need to show how you could get you image public. Also offer to paint/vinyl your car to look like one of their buses. Cheap track car $1k +$300/race. 3K to keep a road car/yr. see
I can not help but feel that advertising is out of control. Even in racing the term of marketing is used to define advertisement. There is a difference. Racing is a good platform to "advertise" car components.(As stated, why is Tide on a NASCAR?)...or the example of RedBull F1. I do notice the RedBull F1 car and team, but it does not get me buy more energy drinks. Energy drinks do have nothing with speed. It does not speak to me. If it was Castrol oil i would consider it as my choice of oil.
This is offtopic but I was wondering if you could do some quarter mile tests of new cars. I always look for those in all of the specs, and some are hard to find. The reason I love the quarter mile times as boring as it is to go straight, is because realistically I don't plan to go crazy fast when I'm turning on the street. On the other hand, the quarter mile time and trap speed gives me a good idea of the cars "push you back in your seat" feel, and that's the fun part for me.

So keep up the good work, this is the kind of information that we're looking for. Thanks!

i just realized why im not a big fan of leo. he talks in 3 words. he pauses in the middle of sentences. he has charisma. just not for me. hes like shatner in the way he talks.

Keep doing this, it's always good to hear someone's insight that actually knows what they're talking about and is passionate about what they know.

Nice video, I am a racer (dirt not street; two wheels not four, but it all takes money) and I'm looking to make the race team I ride for a few more bucks so we can make it to all the nationals in the next few years. So keep up the good work, this is the kind of information that we're looking for. Thanks!
