@psiolence, The system has lock-out positions imbedded into the software. Meaning that it could never turn around and shot that camera. I also used to work on the forward mount on the USS Essex LHD-2. With great hearing protection it is not bad. We used to be outside next to it all the time. Just stay behind it :)

@Dutchy1965 This is a towed target mate, did the shoot myself. PAC doesn't train like that and you only do a 2.0 sec burst.

@ozzieunited thats correct.....watched a towed target shoot when I was AWEEO in HOBART in 1993......CIWS actually started tracking up the cable after the target was destroyed

I understand that the only time they've fired CIWS in anger was in the Persian Gulf. Incoming enemy missile headed for the Missouri. CIWS on two escorts started to target missile when Missouri fired chafe to confuse incoming missile. CIWS switched targets and started shooting at the chafe peppering the Missouri. Counter missiles were fired to take down the incoming enemy missile. Serious Red Face moment for targeting programmer.

@mmabagain, Sure was mate, an aircraft towing a mock missile with a 10000 Yard cable. Obviously we shot at the missile not the plane :)

@TuAFFalcon The apache helicopters do get a lot of the coyotes before they get to the dog food. They're not so good on the crows, though. Can you imagine when the CIWS activates on the ship, and then everyone has to close their eyes because of the laser? I would think that the water would divert the laser beam. I guess they figured a way around that?

I love it. I used to work on CIWS on ship back in 80's and on shore duty out in San Diego before I got out of the Navy. On shore duty @ SIMA ships would bring us all the components they could take of the CIWS unit and we'd tear them down, clean them up, new bearings etc and send them back to the ship. It was actually some pretty good shore duty.
