Worst part of this game is your skill modifier focus track. I never feel like I have good reason to move it because you really never know what will happen. You can get into a fight at the library
@TrollOvGrimness I agree. The only time this ability is useful is if you've played the game a LOT and are counting the cards. I consider this feature clunky and unnecessary.
He is right. I've tried playing many times and when we did fight the ancient one, near the end of the battle (4 HOUR BATTLE) I was finally done with it. BORING DONT BUY! 6D sux
Was this game fun for you, until it dragged too long. If that's the case you should purchase Mansions of Madness, same theme, it's a newer update. It has high quality components and takes about 2 hours half the time of this game. If you want similar theme at a cheaper price you should pre-order Elder Signs at amazon.com cheap price and looks like a great game.
Just played yesterday.. isn't it ithaqua that makes you take an item check? one of the ancient ones does.. that dick took so many cards from me D:
luckily i was left with an enchanted dagger and some other +6 combat check card, i can't remember what it was.. lol either way after 4 hours, the 4 of us killed the ancient one.
anyways, the game is actually pretty fun to play with friends, if you have friends to play with i recommend looking for the game
hahaha me and two of my friends were playing this, and i became a police officer. so i thought " hey i wont be needing any speed anymore as i have the patrol car!!" so i put my speed to 0 and giving me maximum sneak.
next round i enter a house and get an encounter where a big ass wooden beam falls on my head... "make a speed test" :P
Once played this with my friends, and we were fighting Cthulu. We were 6 players and everyone except one had heavy weapons. The one guy didn't have any weapon at all, and a rather weak combat character. In the end he literally punched Cthulu! And that was the killing blow! It was hilarious.
You can't fight against Cthulhu, because Cthulhu doesn't care about you. He's just sleeping and his dreams happen to ruin your pathetic, insignificant life. He's like a Honey Badger, He don't give a shit.

Not that Christians are fools, but what I'm saying is that what Derleth did to HPL's works, as in *attempt* to "Continue" them whilst inserting his notions that the Old Ones were actually fighting over the earth - inserting his "Heaven and Hell" conflict crap and branding his garbage as "Weird Fiction".This game is ultimately a continuation of that drivel and therefore I completely dismiss it. On a more positive note however, that was a good review, and the music was a nice touch.
This game is a stupid mockery of HP Lovecraft's masterpieces of literature. This game has SPELLS in it and the investigators actually KILL the aliens! this is ridiculous, i for one would never play this game just because i think it is such a joke. I like board games, but out of respect to the literature I for one would never play this game. Absolutely ridiculous, it completely dilutes the horror of Lovecraft, and is based on that Christian crap spewed out by that fool Derleth.
Hahaha, it's just a boardgame! Holy crap, calm down. I think it's a pretty neat idea actually. It doesn't cheapen Lovecraft at all because it's not canonical. Why are you getting so defensive about something that's just fiction?
Man, bet hed never see the day. H.P Lovecraft living until he can review a game based on his own work. Bet its surprising, stories werent that popular in his own time. Too bad you cant collect the royalties, huh lovecraft?
Love this game. Difficulty depends a lot on the number of players playing it. Even with a lot of players, the game can still be really nasty to you. I remember when a star spawn was camping the hospital for like the whole game once. XD
How do you resolve situations when there are two or more monsters in the same location. Do you have to pass two modifier checks? Or just the hardest, as the resulting combat alerts the less alert other monsters. Do you fight one at a time or do you subtract the combined modifiers and fight both simultaneously?
@Jeorney You do everything one by one. for instance, if there are is a cultist and star spawn in the same tile you first pick which monster you want to deal with. In this instance I'd pick the cultist. I will say I fight the cultist then role to fight the cultist. After that I can choose to fight or evade the star spawn. If I can make my evade check successfully I don't have to fight him but remain in the tile because any fighting stops movement.
I bought this game thanks to this review, and I have to say the review doesn't really do it justice. I think it really is a fantastic game, one of the best I have played. :)
Great review! I've been thinking about getting this for a while now, and I think I just got sold on it. One thing I will say, though it's just an opinion, I'd put the "random encounters" in the replayability area rather than luck. While it is luck, it changes the different games MORE than your ability to win I think. But that's just me. : ) Thanks again!
Hey! You're suppose to close the gate before sealing it! You have to use either a lore or fight check (whichever is higher) minus or plus the amount of dies to close it. You spend 5 clue tokens to seal it.
im a call of cthulhu rpg freak and run it twice a week. I have not shed $60 yet for the game but I am thinking of buying it. They had it at Barnes & Nobles now. They have gotten alot of great board games there including all the Rio Grande Games.
@marceloyanez111pt2 I myself bought it just recently on Amazon. Was able to find a copy for about 48 dollars inculding shipping, so I'd look there and other online stores.
I wish I could play this board game. I have never played a board game and I dunno how to play but it looks fuckin' cool !!! It looks like a table-party-RPG xD
Thanks for the review! It was really helpful to see the game explained to some extent. I now know that, although I love Lovecraft's stories, this game is not my cup of tea. You just saved me a good bit of money. The review was well-structured and I had to laugh out loud when you mentioned the fact that playing a game on the floor for 2 to 4 hours is not the best idea :-)
Completly brilliant! A really great review which was more of a "how to play" than a rewview, which I loved! We just bought the game and spent a lot of time just to get started but gave up that night and played Munchkin instead :) Now we have more to go on and your instructions were more solid than the rulebook.
Possibly the best board game I've played. Any game that allows you to play as a drifter or magician is awesome in my book. Very good review as well. The atmospheric music was a fantastic touch.
Great review, very informative. I'll probably end up buying the game after this. The idea that it can be played by one player is intriguing, so I'll have to find out for myself.
@krisfrosz: If you have three to four friends, than this is should be viewed as a video game night substitute. something your group can spend a night drinking and having a good time while playing a game or two.
I saw this board game and its expansions at my local comics store. I wanted to buy it but it was kinda expensive :(. Not cool because I love the Cthulhu Mythos.
Ever try talking the to the manager of the store you might be able to convince him to drop the price a bit,I mean you got to figure the game came out in the 80s if he has not sold it by now he would probably be willing to reduce the games price yeah take my advice haggle with him.
Love Arkham Horror. Rated one of my top ten games. The only thing that frustrates me about it, is that they dont label the monster tokens from expansions with the expansion symbol. So you kind have to look up each xpansions monster list and hunt and pull. Though I still give this game and expansions a 9/10 for the sheer enjoyment i've gotten from it over the years.
@Gudamangipo: Hear, hear. Every time I get a new expansion, I buy a new highlighter colour and highlight the names of the monsters on the new monster tokens with that highlighter, so I can easily remove them later. (I also write the initials of the expansion on the token, too, just to be sure in case the highlighter wears off.)
I need help!!! i wanna buy it but i cant find it in singapore!!! any1 noe where?? I love this game!!! And all the expansions!! i wanna get all arkham horror stuff!!! all the expansions and dice sets and all!!! And how do i get my friend into playing this??
He hates board games.. But this is epic.. Its better than just a board game!! Any1 pls tell me where i can get in singapore pls!! Thanks!!
There is one thing I never understood about this game... Don't think the rulebook mention it actually. The "explored markers" that has a 2 or a 3 printed on. What are they???
Oh, I forgot to add that if anyone does buy this game and like it, there is one essential expansion you must buy; The Dunwich Horror. It (as some folk like to say) fixes a broken element of the game by introducing the Madness & Injury cards.
They allow the choice to go 'Mad' or Insane, & also to be 'Injured' or Hospitalized. Each one gives a negative stat & is picked at random and kept (v.slim chance to cure), with no item loss.
I got this for a friend with two big box expansions, & 70+ dice!
The sound you had in the background, you use anything similar for atmosphere while playing the game?
I think an ambient/horror soundtrack would add a lot to the game. Not that I've played a game yet. Even more awesome would be several soundtracks that relate to the Horror Track metre and the current population of the town.
You mentioned taking encounters in unison, but didn't mention that the five dice would be too few for even one person, let alone a group of 4-8. How many dice did you use?
Great review for this absolute brilliant game. Great game mechanism, mind boggling artwork.. worth to buy expansions.. what more could anybody wish for?
Even somebody who's not into the Cthulhu Mythos will enjoy it time after time..
Get some beers, a pack of crisps and enjoy a weekend at R'lhey with friends playing this game!
Great review. A few other tips on the game, if you draw the Great Old One Azathoth it can either be a blessing or a curse. Since it has the longest doom track, a game where he is the end game gives the investigators plenty of time to close all the gates and win the game. So if you're having trouble winning at the game, choosing him may be a good move since it will give you plenty of time to finish the game. There is a catch to this.
However, if the game drags on or you get a few unlucky draws and he is awakened then it's game over as Azathoth's awakening results in an automatic loss. Chances are though, if you are forced to fight any Great Old One then it's going to result in a loss unless you're really tactful and lucky. Something to keep in mind.
Also, if you find the game too easy, try having more than one Great Old One on the clock at the same time. It really gets tense and challenging if you have 2-3.
I just ordered this game solely based on this review. Organizing a early dinner then 3 wives and 3 husbands will give it a go.. Also on me and my wife will play a 2 player with 4 toons first to learn the game. I'll keep you posted on how it all goes. (PS - more board game reviews)
i had played yesterday with my cousin( he never played the game before) and toke us almost 8 hours to play. we won the game by sealing 6 gates when the ancient had 1 doom token left till awake(Azathoth) :)
I had played today with 4 friends, it toke us about 7 hours. But ancient killed us :( Really bad one- when he isn't sleeping, he destroys the world. ;)
I didn't understand how you make a succesful skill test. You need a five or a one in your dice, but when you say you'd failed you still had a one o your dice...
nfwjb: To make a successful skill test, you have to roll a 5 or 6 (or 4 if you're blessed).
Most skill tests only require one success, so if you roll 10 dice and only one of them is a 5 or 6, that's still enough to pass. Rolling a 1 is almost never good in this game (unless you're trying to get rid of a Cursed card).
If you have 5 Clue tokens and discard half (rounded down) you discard 2 Clue tokens. If you have 13 Items you'd discard 6.
Rounding down is generally ignoring the number after the decimal. If AH used rounding up, losing half of 5 Clue tokens would require you to get rid of 3.
Just wondering should i get Arkham King in Yellow, Zombies 1, or Last Night on Earth. (I don't own Zombies or Last night, just played them at a friends house, so I know the rules.)
bloodawn5: Just place an Activity Marker on the location that the activity is happening at. They're merely to remind you that something is going on in that area (so the number on the Activity marker isn't really important)
Thank you for the review. I have decided to purchase it, however it seems to be out of stock here in Adelaide, South Australia. Anyway, am waiting. Hope you keep the reviews coming. Good work!
That's true, and its the way I play most of the time. You need to control several characters as gates open faster than one character can get them closed. It can take a long time to play it out when you have to consider multiple character turns at a time though.
Me, my brother & 2 friends we play this game often, and it is very much fun. We have bought all of the expansions ( Dunwitch, Black Goat of the woods, Curse of the Dark Pharaoh, King in Yellow ) and i can say that the game gains a lot more depth with all of them added, and it gets huge! I recomment to anyone who likes board games to try it.
I picked up Arkham Hooror a week ago based on this review and I must say that I'm quite happy with it.
I've gotten in 4 play sessions since then. The only flaw I can find with it is the low amount of encounter cards. If you visit one area regularly, you'll see the same encounters turn up quite often. I picked up one of the card-only expansions to try and remedy this.
Otherwise, the game is good solid fun for a small to average size group.
the other expansion packs give lots of other encounters. Also, knowing most enconters is strategic. for example going to the science building to try and get blessed :)
Great review :)

Gep9402 2 years ago

@KyosukeNatsume HP Lovecraft did not have an AU accent. Horrifyingly enough he had a Rhode Island accent.

I didn't understand how you make a succesful skill test. You need a five or a one in your dice, but when you say you'd failed you still had a one o your dice...
nfwjb 2 years ago
nfwjb: To make a successful skill test, you have to roll a 5 or 6 (or 4 if you're blessed).
Most skill tests only require one success, so if you roll 10 dice and only one of them is a 5 or 6, that's still enough to pass. Rolling a 1 is almost never good in this game (unless you're trying to get rid of a Cursed card).
TriumphantOgre 2 years ago
You need a 5 of 6 in your dice roll to score a success (4,5,6 if you're blessed or only 6 if you're cursed).

What does it mean that you discard half of your items and half of your clue tokens(rounded down)
what does it mean rounded down,i have already readen the rules but I dont understand what they mean with rounded down
bloodawn5 2 years ago
If you have 5 Clue tokens and discard half (rounded down) you discard 2 Clue tokens. If you have 13 Items you'd discard 6.
Rounding down is generally ignoring the number after the decimal. If AH used rounding up, losing half of 5 Clue tokens would require you to get rid of 3.

Just wondering should i get Arkham King in Yellow, Zombies 1, or Last Night on Earth. (I don't own Zombies or Last night, just played them at a friends house, so I know the rules.)
MrGrimmv2 2 years ago
How do you use the activity markers?
bloodawn5 2 years ago
bloodawn5: Just place an Activity Marker on the location that the activity is happening at. They're merely to remind you that something is going on in that area (so the number on the Activity marker isn't really important)
TriumphantOgre 2 years ago
I'm soo addicted to Arkham *_*

Does this game have witchcraft or is really Dark?
cockoco 3 years ago
No, not really. It's interesting that females generally like the cooperative aspect to it and like it how each game is a different story.
Kerbster76 3 years ago
@Kerbster76 Not just females, either. Some males, like myself, are anti-competition, and pro-cooperation.

In some webs i read i can play ALONE the game, it that´s true?
Admend 3 years ago

Otherwise, the game is good solid fun for a small to average size group.
rdrover 3 years ago 2
the other expansion packs give lots of other encounters. Also, knowing most enconters is strategic. for example going to the science building to try and get blessed :)
