@2010TheSpade Very true. The liberals had the foresight to save during the boom, so that we could holdout the recession. The $1000 handouts were a huge waste of money. The future building was also rushed, and miss managed.

However don't bash single mothers, looking after children is a pretty demanding job. The medium term investment in single parents is worth the longterm investment in their children. My mother raised me mostly by herself, she is now back working. I am studying engineering.

I think the one good thing that has come out of the Liberal parties decision to attempt to block the 42 billion dollar rescue package is the scrutiny that will now be paid to the planned tax cuts.

Most people did not realise that these planned tax cuts were so badly skewed to benefit the wealthy. The gap between the rich and the poor is already far to big, these tax cuts will only serve to make the rich richer and the poor even poorer.

Scrap the planned tax cuts now, we don't need them.

Also, how many people have we heard of that really were disadvantaged by workchoices? It was all hype - have you been amongst any union 'discussions' anywhere? This is a juvenile and (the most) temporary allocation of funds. What about massive investment in innovation and efficiency (by education and application). This industry will be stimulated and long term the cost of goods will decrease. When we escape from this recession we will be in a very strong position

I dont think that anyone is disputing the implementation of A stimulus package. However it is the over-hasty and immature nature of this package that is raising heads around Aus. An example is the cash hand-out to most Aussies, the intent is for this money to be spent swiftly on luxuries to provide relief to business to keep people employed. As Aussies buy imported goods out of the current stocks of retailers this provides relief to retailers on their current cash outlay.

If Turnbull insists on blocking this 42 billion dollar bill the government should scrap the all planned tax cuts and re-design them so they will benefit ordinary Australians instead of just the very wealthy.

I know Kevin promised to implement them, but he will be left with no choice but to make very extreme modifications to them if Turnbull and the Libs insist on continuing on the path they have chosen.

If Turnbull thinks he has a monopoly on throwing spanners in the works he is wrong.

Many people don't even learn basic economics this stimulus package is just going to help us in the short run but what about the long run? our current account deficit will go out of hand and our fiscal will fall to deficit! and not to mention that our inflation target is above the 2-3% inflation target, this will drive down our buying power and we'll be worst off in the long run.. I just wish people would educate themselves before endorsing short term policies.
