@Wulfenader bro the biggest difference is the higher stances, it really isn't that hard for shotokan students to stand a bit higher. i do respect how kyokushinkai students train (the real deal, not the watered down local kindergarten/dojo's) but until one style learns how to grow extra arms and obtain laservision, don't go round making statements like that
@marekmaxpabianice None the less, you can easily tell that their base movement and stance are from karate.

@KyokushinTruth Perfect answer, and the most evidence is the stance and lateral movement!! And there is a video here when Machida teach it to Anderson, very cool!!
@devonmac95 this is incorrect, kickboxers bob and weave and have movement but not in the same way with the wide stances and jumping in and then directly back out, most will circle. Just because kickboxing does something similar doesn't mean anything. I don't get why ppl love to claim its not karate, when these guys spend hours daily training under there karate coaches, use it in the fight only for ppl to go "that looks like kickboxing to me and i am going to claim it's not karate"
@multiplecocco O.O are you seriously that stupid? he asked what martial art GSP did and the answer is Kyokushin...it doesn't matter what styles previously melded into that martial art. @gang1337grace thanks for the backup man i always appreciate your support. The little kid was spreading lies putting words in my mouth, claiming i said these guys were not using anything but shotokan in mma, when i had explained a hundred times its them adapting the style like any other to work in MMA. Just like boxing had to be adapted to use in MMA to not use bob and weave techniques due to knees. Yet he kept lying so i blocked him
@KyokushinTruth I practice JKA shotokan alongside muay thai, tang soo do and jujitsu, and i understand how to analyse and adapt shotokan techniques in fights. Tolls gonna troll, i'm afraid :/
I have a purple belt in shotokan, it has it's limits like every other martial art but fact is there's a shitload of techniques that'll fuck you up... Albeit, sprinkled with a few that aren't any use outwith a kata
fighter in this video, lyoto machida is karateka with shotokan karate base. the shotokan karate also have hook and uppercut punch not only straight punch even shotokan has elbow, finger and knee attack. these technique is dangerous because all karate style is designed to kill. the reason why people think shotokan has only straight punch is because hook, uppercut, elbow, finger n knee attack is forbidden in sport karate. sport karate rule is the reason why shotokan get underestimated.²
Just to clear things out, I practice Shotokan Karate, and at 0:25 he was doing a part of the kata Tekke Ni-dan, haha or is it Tekki San-dan? Not sure i haven't done that in a while, but nevertheless, its DEFINITELY Shotokan Karate
Hey, is there room here for someone who loves both TMA's and non-TMA's? Back in the 60's, I was a huge fan of Mas Oyama, Bruce Lee, and Muhammad Ali. Still am. And I love MMA (I've taken CSW, Western Boxing, and Muay Thai more recently). In junior high school, I won a fight with three moves: karate block of a right hook, into an aikido wrist lock and standing arm bar, into an uppercut (boxing) to the solar plexus, resulting in a TKO for me. Let's look for the good in each other : )
@carnivalwrestler your right. what people dont realize in TMA 75% of the moves are not aloud in MMA. im sorry. but if you could just grab somebodys finger and snap it off in MMA why dont people do it more often? if i can force two fingers through 1/8 inch dry wall what would happen if i got you in the throat? whats stopping me from grabbing the back of your head and chin and twisting until you tap out? MMA isnt fighting its sport. TMA is survival at its best.
@dbspaceoditty Yes, but many of the moves in MMA can be used effectively in a fight. But there are 38 rules in the UFC, and that's pro (amateur meets have more, of course), no spinal cord attacks, no small joint locks (a really bad rule), no 12-6 elbows, etc. My solution: be an eclectic martial artist, borrow from various systems, use what works for you. And train like a beast against many fully resisting, full speed, full fury opponents and you'll get to where you need to be.
@TMBmain Look at the list above, but IMO, perhaps the best at capitalizing on submissions is Erik Paulson, and I think he has some vids, plus a number of "how-to's" on youtube. Also, watch how Emelianenko submits or KO's a lot of guys 100+ lbs heavier than he is (one of his highlight videos shows at least three of these). As far as being aggressive on takedowns, I would advise you to develop explosive power through plyometrics (exercises). And always remember deception : ) (cont'd.)
@TMBmain Keep in mind that plyometrics require an eccentric contraction of a muscle (group) followed immediately by a concentric contraction. 99.9% of the "plyometrics" on youtube are not plyometric. Always think "Explosive Rebound". Go to drsquat.com or some other excellent fitness website to learn what plyos really are. IMO, mere jumping, up or down, is not plyo unless it involves an explosive rebound, and that's where the gains are made, on that explosive rebound.
@TMBmain Fedor Emelianenko is one of my all time favorite fighters. You should look up some of his vids, because he's the real deal, and he's into sambo. Other fighters you might want to look up (catch wrestlers with some added goodies): Sakuraba (the Gracie Hunter) and Erik Paulson, who developed Combat Submission Wrestling (grappling on steroids, with punches, kicks, elbows and knees, etc.). In the UFC, complete fighters are BJ Penn, George St. Pierre, and Lyoto Machida, and others.
@carnivalwrestler yep. MMA just uses a lot of the good stuff in each TMA. in MMA it is almost a requirement that you be competent in striking, takedown, and grappling arts. but the fighters that really shine, know enough of each so they can defend from it, and are really damn good at at an art that fits their style and just win with it. like anderson silva with his striking, or gsp with his ability to just take people down and keep them down. or machida with his karate + bjj/takedown defense.
@CallMeSofaKing actually all of this is karate as i have explained before, snapping kicks, low stance, avoiding the hits by jumping in and out, Antonio carvalho one of the people in this video is a friend of mine and he even says hes shotokan. Nice try tho.
@KyokushinTruth :O I hardly see anything in this video that would be the result of Shotokan training, at least not the classical version of it. If Antonia does Shotokan, he either has an interesting approach to it - there ARE people who have that ;) - or he does a LOT of other things beside that. ;)
@Gooregan Well if you don't see anything then you are either willfully lying or ignorant. I've explained this before the stances the snapping kicks the jumping in and out strikes is all shotokan. Nobody can argue lyoto machida is not a karate fighter, even joe rogan agrees with it. Seriously denying lyoto machida does karate you might as well be saying ww2 never happened....its just a fact but prattle on with your bs
He does some karate moves but he doesn't fight like a karate guy and do those stupid punches were you open your legs as if you're laying an egg or the retarded blocks which are ineffective.
I don't see how boxing (hooks, boxing jabs etc..); taking down your opponent and performing triangle/forearm chokes qualifies you as purely a karate fighter.
Conclusion:
He's a mixed martial artist.
If he had to fight 100% like a karate guy, he would get raped.
@xRaIDeNx69 another PAINFULLY ignorant and stupid comment. Where did i claim he was a pure karate fighter? this is shotokan adapted for mixed martial arts video, of course its going to be mixed with other styles. Also you show your ignorance so badly when talking about the shotokan punches. Shotokan has hooks straights and lunging jabs...its not exclusive to boxing and is slightly different. Where did i claim he didn't have a BJJ background? conclusion:you are painfully dumb
Would not mind to see some explanation on who is who on the video and who of them actually belongs to shotokan school; who did they bit and what stile fighters are the defeated guys.
Without explanation this footage is of no interest for ordinary people - who does not know all those names on the list of "Fighters are:..."
I did visit our local shotokan club for a few long years when I was younger (18 years ago), with a trainer - the champion of his country, now I am just a sofa sitter.
from all antique martial arts, Karate came out as better method and technique than the rest exotic but not very practical arts. It doesn't mean one is ultimate than other, but more realistic.
@iaoin2009 actually since both buakaw and rob kaman have zero ground training it would be extremely unlikely that they could last more than a minute in the cage with them, i would expect them to be taken down and pounded into oblivion in seconds
I agree my sifu would exile me from my martial arts school for using deadly combat to show off. But it would be fun to jump in a mma ring and hit some nerve points to stop the heart of one of those mma fighters and then the world would realize why real martial arts can't be used in the ring because there would be death every match.
So....here we see a little karate...some ground & pound...some clinch work....some wrestling...basically, good counter striking mixed with a bunch of other more effective, pragmatic work. But I will say, I have never seen any other martial artists look as wise doing position practice on a cliff. All karate, right there.
@KyokushinTruth Thanks for sharing dude I appreciate the video. It's a shame that many people try to criticize videos, knowing they never trained or fought a day in their life. All respect to you my friend. I am currently getting ready to train is Shotokan myself. Again thank you for sharing. It is true evolving and adapting is important in martial arts.
@KyokushinTruth I don't wanna attack UFC fighters as individuals, but its devolved to nothing more than a sport in MMA ie. No element of etiquette, tradition or respect. Just listen to some of them in press conferences: "Like I said ta him, ahm gonna whoop your ass, so he says like 'come on, like prove it now'... blah, blah. Never heard this kind of arrogance and dumb shit before or after a kyokushin world competition. MMA is more wrestlemania than martial arts now.
@KyokushinTruth In truth, all MMA fighters I have met are "wannabe tough guys" who go out looking for fights on the street because they think they have something to prove. Your view comes down to your experiences I guess
@MyS0ngList You are ignorant an have obviously never trained in MMA nor Karate before. MMA it is not only an art but sport in which you compete just the same as any other form of martial arts so by you condemning MMA you therefore are saying that every form of martial arts is trash which makes you look even more like a giant ass. I have trained for 5+ years in MMA and i have met an sparred with many MMA fighters as well as Karate style fighters and they all have something in common...Heart!!
@MyS0ngList "Such a shame of what MMA is, like really it's a bunch of hate filled, small penis syndrome wannabe tough guys who join arts for a few years then enter the ring because they got something to prove."
Wow, angry man... they all "join arts for a few years then enter the ring because they got something to prove"?
What about Lyoto Machida?: He began training in Shotokan at the age of 3.
Chuck Liddell?: He began studying Koei-Kan karate at the age of 12 (background in Kempo also).
Georges St-Pierre: started learning Kyokushin karate at age 7.
Anderson Silva: started training in Tae kwon do at the age 14.
Royce Gracie: started learning BJJ as soon as he could walk, competing at the age 8.
Yes, anybody can step in a octogan/ring/cage... but only true warriors step out victorious. Just because you don't want to test your skills doesn't mean some other skilled martial artists don't.
If you read stories about the fighters I mentioned (& others) they all started learning martial arts for the right reasons. Bas Rutten is known for being a real loud mouthed jokester (and a great MMA fighter), but he started learning martial arts because he was being bullied at school.
At some point some great martial artists often want to test themselves... it's their right, the've done the training. MMA is a controlled match, a test of skills... not a dirty street fight.
@MyS0ngList insecure about other people being insecure and trying to be good martial artists? think you might be gething turned on by the fighters and are really gay?
Also a lot of good has come from this sport. Especially for Karate. Before Lyoto Machida became the champion of the UFC via Shotokan Karate, people thought Karate was a joke. It has done a lot for Karate's image and what people think of it. I agree that martial arts should be for self defense and for fun, character building etc. And I hate the half naked girls walking around for no reason... But these guys are very good at martial arts, you cannot denaie this.
@aleksandrsokolov Dude MMA does not always have to be in a cage. There are people who consider themself mix martial artist and train for the street. For example, Bruce Lee was one of them.
Karate is one of the most amazing fighting styles you will ever learn I know cause I do it myself I do wado ryu karate I'd say karate and kickboxing for kicks but out of those 2 I'd say karate because your quicker and stronger with the kicks
@aleksandrsokolov evolve or die. It's a sport not a disgrace, honestly i am so tired of arguing this with rly rly fanatical traditionalists. Just because it is not in the absolute purist form of the "traditional" shotokan karate does not mean its not shotokan. It's techniques adapted to work in a new environment. I would hope if funakoshi was alive today he would appreciate his style being represented in the changing martial arts world.
@KyokushinTruth Thank you! I completely agree. People act like they know funakoshi. Regardless I am sure there would be some appreciation that his style is represented all throughout the world!
@KyokushinTruth When speaking about Funakoshi, I would agree that he would probably be disappointed on Shotokan's usage in MMA; however I only say because of Funakoshi's beliefs since he greatly discouraged sparring. That said, Choki Motobu would probably think otherwise and actually appreciate the current direction since he definitely was known more as a dominant fighter in Shotokan (it should also be noted that Funakoshi and Motobu were known rivals).
I dont get why people still say stuff like karate beats kick boxing or the other way around, i mean it really depends a lot on how skilled and trained are the fighters. If we could take ALL the other factors away form the equation maybe we'd know which martial art is better than the other one but really, it depends on the situation, condition, even the place where you are fighting and lots of other stuff, if u take any martial art to the max u are gonna be pretty much the shit. So stfu and train
@chrisbrown340 you are not shotokan 3rd dan. This is shotokan. See how pointless it is to make baseless accusations with nothing backing them up? Seriously tho nobody is going to believe you if you cannot even spell the name of the martial art you claim to be from.
@Ajaw8 you know nothing. Baseless assertions for all. If you're not going to present an argument then don't just throw out nonsense with video evidence against you.
@xRallentendo I agree with you that the fighting looks untrained. In MMA you have to understand that most of these guy did not spend years honing their supposed art form. They train in certain techniques and adapt them for the ring. Being a 4th dan shotokan stylist myself I understand how all the purist feel about this. But isn't the martial arts about war in any form? To adapt to any situation defines the martial arts completely. When you are in a combat situation, use what works.
@KyokoshinTruth youright, kickbokxing and karate are nit the same at all. I prqctise muay thai, it's not the same as karate

Yet he kept lying so i blocked him

fighter in this video, lyoto machida is karateka with shotokan karate base. the shotokan karate also have hook and uppercut punch not only straight punch even shotokan has elbow, finger and knee attack. these technique is dangerous because all karate style is designed to kill. the reason why people think shotokan has only straight punch is because hook, uppercut, elbow, finger n knee attack is forbidden in sport karate. sport karate rule is the reason why shotokan get underestimated.²

TMA is survival at its best.
dbspaceoditty 3 weeks ago
@dbspaceoditty Yes, but many of the moves in MMA can be used effectively in a fight. But there are 38 rules in the UFC, and that's pro (amateur meets have more, of course), no spinal cord attacks, no small joint locks (a really bad rule), no 12-6 elbows, etc. My solution: be an eclectic martial artist, borrow from various systems, use what works for you. And train like a beast against many fully resisting, full speed, full fury opponents and you'll get to where you need to be.

TMBmain 3 weeks ago
@TMBmain
Any idea's on aggresive takedowns?and capitalizing on submissions?
Tutorial would be nice.
TMBmain 3 weeks ago
@TMBmain Look at the list above, but IMO, perhaps the best at capitalizing on submissions is Erik Paulson, and I think he has some vids, plus a number of "how-to's" on youtube. Also, watch how Emelianenko submits or KO's a lot of guys 100+ lbs heavier than he is (one of his highlight videos shows at least three of these). As far as being aggressive on takedowns, I would advise you to develop explosive power through plyometrics (exercises). And always remember deception : ) (cont'd.)
carnivalwrestler 2 weeks ago
@TMBmain Keep in mind that plyometrics require an eccentric contraction of a muscle (group) followed immediately by a concentric contraction. 99.9% of the "plyometrics" on youtube are not plyometric. Always think "Explosive Rebound". Go to drsquat.com or some other excellent fitness website to learn what plyos really are. IMO, mere jumping, up or down, is not plyo unless it involves an explosive rebound, and that's where the gains are made, on that explosive rebound.
carnivalwrestler 2 weeks ago
@TMBmain Fedor Emelianenko is one of my all time favorite fighters. You should look up some of his vids, because he's the real deal, and he's into sambo. Other fighters you might want to look up (catch wrestlers with some added goodies): Sakuraba (the Gracie Hunter) and Erik Paulson, who developed Combat Submission Wrestling (grappling on steroids, with punches, kicks, elbows and knees, etc.). In the UFC, complete fighters are BJ Penn, George St. Pierre, and Lyoto Machida, and others.

AmericanAztec915 2 weeks ago

KyokushinTruth 1 month ago
@KyokushinTruth :O I hardly see anything in this video that would be the result of Shotokan training, at least not the classical version of it. If Antonia does Shotokan, he either has an interesting approach to it - there ARE people who have that ;) - or he does a LOT of other things beside that. ;)
Gooregan 1 month ago
@Gooregan Well if you don't see anything then you are either willfully lying or ignorant. I've explained this before the stances the snapping kicks the jumping in and out strikes is all shotokan. Nobody can argue lyoto machida is not a karate fighter, even joe rogan agrees with it. Seriously denying lyoto machida does karate you might as well be saying ww2 never happened....its just a fact but prattle on with your bs
KyokushinTruth 1 month ago
@KyokushinTruth
If he had to fight 100% like a karate guy, he would get raped.
xRaIDeNx69 4 weeks ago
@xRaIDeNx69 another PAINFULLY ignorant and stupid comment. Where did i claim he was a pure karate fighter? this is shotokan adapted for mixed martial arts video, of course its going to be mixed with other styles. Also you show your ignorance so badly when talking about the shotokan punches. Shotokan has hooks straights and lunging jabs...its not exclusive to boxing and is slightly different. Where did i claim he didn't have a BJJ background? conclusion:you are painfully dumb
KyokushinTruth 4 weeks ago
Would not mind to see some explanation on who is who on the video and who of them actually belongs to shotokan school; who did they bit and what stile fighters are the defeated guys.
Without explanation this footage is of no interest for ordinary people - who does not know all those names on the list of "Fighters are:..."
I did visit our local shotokan club for a few long years when I was younger (18 years ago), with a trainer - the champion of his country, now I am just a sofa sitter.

I agree my sifu would exile me from my martial arts school for using deadly combat to show off. But it would be fun to jump in a mma ring and hit some nerve points to stop the heart of one of those mma fighters and then the world would realize why real martial arts can't be used in the ring because there would be death every match.
machinehead110 1 month ago
So....here we see a little karate...some ground & pound...some clinch work....some wrestling...basically, good counter striking mixed with a bunch of other more effective, pragmatic work.

CONT
dalehcw 1 month ago
@MyS0ngList FURTHER:
Just because you don't want to test your skills doesn't mean some other skilled martial artists don't.
dalehcw 1 month ago
@MyS0ngList FURTHER

I would hope if funakoshi was alive today he would appreciate his style being represented in the changing martial arts world.

agelesskarate 1 month ago

@KyokushinTruth The fighting in the video looks completely untrained. .-.''

xRallentendo 1 month ago
@xRallentendo I agree with you that the fighting looks untrained. In MMA you have to understand that most of these guy did not spend years honing their supposed art form. They train in certain techniques and adapt them for the ring. Being a 4th dan shotokan stylist myself I understand how all the purist feel about this. But isn't the martial arts about war in any form? To adapt to any situation defines the martial arts completely. When you are in a combat situation, use what works.
