this was the best series since twin peaks and like abc, hbo did not know what to do with it and ended up canceling it with a bunch of questions left unanswered. i expect stuff like that from a major network 20 years ago, but this was hbo only 5 years ago. they, like abc, did not realize what they had. like twin peaks, in 15 years people will still be talking about carnivale, while most of the network's 'hits' will be forgotten.
@johnrunion : HBO only cancelled Carnivale for the high production costs. The creator could have settled to lower the production costs of the show just a bit to have a final Season 3. He's as much a blame as HBO for not turning his pride in, and just giving the show a season 3 ending.
@Notebookwriter1 it was originally to be six seasons. the six seasons would be three books; each book would take two seasons to tell. hbo did not want to commit to season three because they knew it would only be the set up for the second book. i really don't see how a show that had such a large cast + such a great looks and great production values could have cut it's costs without undermining the show.
@johnrunion : Yes, the show was meant to go six seasons, but I'm sure the creators could have tied it all up in a final season if only they compromised. Oh well...Carnivale was great while it lasted.
It's a shame that Carnivale got canceled, but I don't blame HBO. I'm not upset with them like a lot of people here seem to be. The fact of the matter is that at $4 million an episode, Carnivale was too expensive for the amount of people who were actually watching it. HBO was willing to renew it at $2 million an ep, but they found it was impossible to keep it up at 2 mil. I'm sure they didn't want to cancel it, but they didn't have much choice.
Oz, Deadwood, Carnivale, Rome, The Wire. All fallen HBO shows that went well before their time (or at least before I was ready for them to go :) Excellent and incredible all in their own ways.
Carnivale & Deadwood were the cancellations that made me want to burn HBO to the ground however.
I agree. Deadwood and Carnivale were in my view, the best TV shows ever produced in the history of humanity. I used to like Deadwood better, and it has some advantages - its dialogue, for example, is the most brilliant screen dialogue ever produced - but over time I slowly got to like Carnivale even more. The sinister magic, the metaphysical ambiguity (is god even good!?), the sense of loneliness that many of the characters suffer from, the charisma of the characters... it wins.
@urbanr0cker OZ was ready to end, I grew up to HBO's show's such as OZ, and The Sopranos, but I feel OZ was ready to end, 6 seasons was enough, BUT Deadwood/Carnivale ended WAY to soon. The Wire is AWESOME as well. I love True Blood and can't wait for Boardwalk Empire this summer. HBO is the shit, I LOVE Breaking Bad on AMC as well, it feels like an HBO show to me.
You're right. Now that I've watched both seasons I can say this is my favorite tv show ever (aside from It's Always Sunny in Philly :P) Damn travesty that there are only two seasons.
just finished watching season 2 wow.. very disappointed to find out that they did not make a season 3

season one is a great set up...but season two is incredible!

the Miserère chant fits in perfectly with the Good / Evil theme!
Love the Justin Crowe character. Brilliant how he develops in two seasons!
I'm still hoping for a carnivale sequel... on any form of media.

This series just gripped me entirely. "Lost" is for dreamers. "Wire" for the realos. "Carnivale" is just beyond everything that's ever been made.
