Thank you for going over the A shape barre chord. It has helped me learned my favorite song which the chords weren't clear but you've made it clear :)P
Is it just me or has anyone found that chord really easy? I literally tried it first time strum pick out strum and it was all fine, including muting both E strings
Incredibly psychically taxing chord. I was actually surprised to find I could change to this chord quite fast with all 5 strings ringing out clearly after 2 days or so but I just cant keep it locked. Playing with it 40-50 seconds and I'm exhausted, my hand all cramped up and weak. Does anyone have any advice on how I should strengthen up my hand as effective as possible?
I find my 2nd/3rd/4th fingers all lie flat on the strings (towards my first finger) when I put the barre in- is my hand just too small? (I'm female, and 14)
Meanwhile, I'll try the big-and-mini-barre method. :D
Just to be smug and annoying, I'd like everyone to know that I got this chord, including the ringing out 1st string, in about 2 minutes, just like the E shape barre chord.
(Doesn't change the fact that I generally suck at guitar but hey, let me have this one moment of feeling good about myself!)
@BandwannaMcGunner dude same, I got it first attempt and can do it incredibly easily that I barely practice it. I am enjoying this moment as usually it takes me a few weeks to get the other barre chords
i was getting so mad at this a shape barre chord becuse i thought i absolutely had to have the 1st string playing with the rest now that i know its ok to have it muted thats a huge load of my mind thanks for this
Come on mate! You dont have to mute either of the E strings now!
If you fret the thick one with your 1st finger its still in tune, unless you arpeggio it, and it is ofcourse very hard for me to frett the thin one even after 18 months of playing but its definetley possilble! =)
@w0rdisbond Don't be so exasperated with the good man. If you don't mute the 6th string, the lowest note you play is a fifth. This then makes the chord an inversion, with a 5th bass note. It's just a different kind of chord, but yes you're right it is an ok way to play the chord if you can't get the barre properly, it just changes its musical impact. The wonderful Justin is merely trying to teach proper technique which makes everything a lot easier when a person progresses on with their playing
@w0rdisbond just in case he shows me the correct way to do it. I wouldn't want to put up with complaints later in life, that I was doing it wrong. It'd ruin the moment.
I need a new guitar ( I have a $70 acoustic lol) and i promised myself i'd get a Gretsch after i master E, Am and and A shaped barre chords. Forget mastering 7th and m7th -__ It's impossible on my guitar.

I always tried to cram my 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers into the A shape... I never figured out how to do the bar with the 3rd finger properly.
So you helped me a lot there, thank you!

Finally! A guitar lesson on these bloody stupid chords!

I was never able to bend my third finger backwards enough to get the highest note of the chord. Kind of frustrating.
