The `FZ meets the Mothers of Prevention` solo of `Whats new in Baltimore?` should be in the top 100 guitar solos instead of `Zoot Allures`.The bands backing in the `Does humour belong in music` version makes this one stand out aswell. He is the most underrated guitarist. Not all of his solos are that accessible to most but its worth trawling the hordes and `listen between the lines` as i tell people who cant get past the comedy songs. As a composer hes up there with the best aswell by the way.FACT!
@DIZamudio Released in albums e.g. "Steve Vai Archives Vol 2" , "Son Of Cheap Thrills", "Chalk Pie", ( Studio) "Does Humor Belong in Music" and "You can't do that on stage anymore Vol- 5" , "Kreega Bondola" ( Live Version)
@hicks727 This interview is a culmination of all the Steve Vai excerpts about Zappa, if you want the whole documentary, find the FZ VPRO Dutch TV documentary in Zappateers.
@ANOTHERHOLEINYOHEAD This song was released in several albums. The studio version was released in "Frank Zappa meets the mothers of prevention", "Steve Vai Archives Vol 2" and the live version was released in "Chalk Pie", "Does Humor Belong in Music" and "You can't do that on stage anymore Vol- 5"
There´s no song writer or composer that even comes close to Frank Zappas output; quality wise or volume wise. Frank Zappas music will live on for ever and the appreciation of his work will continue to grow - of this I´m sure!
As for who was the better guitar player, Frank or Steve - I think thats a pointless comparison (but the answer is a no-brainer in my mind :-)
The version of "Zoot Allures" Vai is talking about was never released. :(
It is from the palladium soundcheck but it is not in the baby snakes DVD as Vai was not even associated with Frank when that movie was recorded in '76 I believe. The "Zoot Allures" performance was probably from 81' or maybe 82'.
@whosOHW That small clip was from the Baby Snakes film, it is available on DVD and it is a live improvised solo on the track Black Napkins. Although Muffin Man on the Bongo Fury record also has one of Frank's best improvised solos.
@srgrimm13156 It's called "What's New In Baltimore?" and can be found on the "Frank Zappa meets the Mothers of Prevention" album. It's one of Frank's more inconsistent albums if you ask me, but that tune alone makes it worth getting.
vai and zappa. names that will never be erased in me. they will always be my hero.. and i will talk about them until i have my grandsons... they will be my fucking idols forever.
@SparXvsGodzilla Good..By the way the name of the song is mentioned in the tag...It can be found in the Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention and the Steve Vai Archives, Vol. 2 album and a few other Live albums..

Vai is a cool cat. He sat on the floor with my friend's little dudes at a clinic and made them feel pretty important.

I know that zappa was totally into fucking around with shit but I personally would've kept this track strictly guitar
