For use of thermite in cutting steel, see my video "Incendiary Experiments".
The mythbusters guys set off 1000 pounds of thermite to try to cut a car in half, and explosives experts at New Mexico Tech try to cut a column and a beam, and a Florida Engineer, Jonathan Cole, cuts columns, beams, bolt heads, and bolts.
careful about lighting it on a wet surface, it can cause the oxygen and hydrogen in the water to separated due to the extreme heat. itll b a little explosion with molten iron flying everywhere... just saying.
Yes Fe2O3 is common red rust, and Fe3O4 is another iron oxide, the stuff in magnetite, it is a black powder. Either one will work, however Fe2O3 is most commonly used.
@hkparker Fe2O3+Al releases more energy, when burning, but Fe3O4+Al releases more energy overall, as most of the energy is released during the re-solidification of the molten iron. Or something like that...
hey thats pretty cool. haha I heard about you guys doing this up in Alaska and all of us on the boat made it sound way more crazy than it really was haha :) all good though.. oh yea Im Kris, Danielle's Brother.
oh, sorry. Fe3O4, or Fe2O3 for that matter, are simply Non hydrated rust. I got my Fe3O4 from beach sand using a magnent to extract the black magnatite (Fe3O4) Aluminum is availible on ebay, the finner both reactants are the faster the reaction. Plz look at my other vid if you have time. Thx
It´s a pitty... when you order al-Powder in Germany the package is delivered by the police... *lol* A neighboure once ordered both, al and rust powder. 5 days later he got a visit by some cops...
@DanielNytro you dont need to order online just make some....for Al crush aluminium foli in a blender then put in a burr coffee grinder for a couple of passes, (the more the better)(must be a burr coffee grinder to get fine powder) and for iron oxide you can burn steel wool thoroughly with a blowtorch and then powder it with coffee grinder, this way youll be making Fe3O4 (as used in this vid) not rust( which can also be home made easily but takes more time!!)
@DanielNytro lol thats funny, here in mexico i buy it 1 block near a military base even german black, they dont give a fuck, the national defense stopped to regulate aluminum in all forms since 2001 here
I just learned about this song today in school.... made in the 1980 looking back on Vietnam extremely Anit-war (pussies) it was songs like this that made every1 blame soldiers for the war in Vietnam so after my dad and uncle had served and would have gladly died for their country they came home and were spit on
The song was actually produced in the 1960's back in the vietnam era. While some may agree with you that this song is anti war, it more or less says we are ALL wrong for our wars. It was popular with soldiers and "hippies" alike.

your dad and uncle were never able to think for themselves. they just did what they were told their whole lives. they were spat on because they fought for some rich assholes, not for their country. you and your family are just too stupid to realize these things. spit on your father for me.
Actually it can be either, but in this case its Fe3O4. Fe2O3 is red in color, also known as hematite. Fe3O4 is magnitite, black in color. The oxidation states are similar except Fe3O4 is one of the few compounds that has a mixed Oxidation state.
yo, u used a sparkler to provide the proper energy to trigger the redox? i was under the impression you needed more energy then that such as that provided by burning Mg. did u just use the sparkler to trigger it?
That right there is power in the wrong hands. That much thermite could have melted through anything, but noooo; you had to create lava in your back yard.
That was pretty awesome, what did you use to suspend it, and what kind of container did you use to hold the thermite? I couldn't really tell but it kind of looked like tin foil?
Thank you. Yes it was aluminum foil. The aluminum foil basket was set on a steal plate (the kind found in the estes rocket kit launch pads) with two wooden dowl supports.

whats the container made of?
will the sparkler still be of use if the particle size is larger (about .5 mm in diameter)?

How much ironoxide and how much aluminium do you used?

Does anyone know what the difference is between Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 when used in thermite?

also Fe2O3 produces about -800KJ while Fe3O4 produces about -3300KJ, much hotter.

how many parts aluminum and iron oxide?
frizspin175 4 years ago
it was like 1:3
i think.
Foxtrotx1 4 years ago
@Foxtrotx1 you mean 3:1??
YourADrag 1 year ago
@YourADrag
No, 1 part Al per 3 parts Iron Oxide by mass.
Foxtrotx1 1 year ago
@frizspin175
yes, Al + ferum oxide (бля тупой язык янглийский)

Yes, the party sparkler works way better than magnesium. I strongly suggest it as a substitute.
