  • THE DAMNED- LIFE GOES ON Came before both these songs. Why doesn't someone make a video of that?

  • theres just one difference... kurt cobain can actually sing

  • jojoj killing joke rulez !

  • There is a difference between borrowing/influence and out-n-out thievery. When you lift an entire melody, that's thievery.

  • everyone copies eachother in Rock. its kind of flattering if u ask me

  • hahaha estas Tontisimo del culo eeh jajaja nisiquiere se pareceen...

  • So why did Dave Grohl plat drums on the last killing joke album. Some say as tribute for this riff.

  • Actually, the sheet music for the Killing Joke song was found in Kurt's apartment, and there was a law suit in progress at the time that he "killed himself". Killing Joke (probably their lawyers or label, actually suing) dropped it.

  • COINCIDENCE

  • you dont steel riffs from someone at the same time, you let people get there ride off it first. faggot

  • Killing Joke the better..

  • Who gives a crap? All forms of art are a continuation of something else that has already been done. Its called evolution. Led Zeppelin done it years ago with old blues riffs.

  • Both good songs, so who cares..

  • you sped nirvana up, and slowed down the killing joke one, so therefore this is stupid

  • @kalemcleod

it doesn't matter. if it's this close to the exact same notes but just played faster then it's still plagiarism.

  • killing joke took this to court but dropped the case when Kurt topped himself. Grohl "payed back" on the latter album "Killing Joke" in 2003 on Zuma.

    lets go!!!

  • Yeah, And the killing joke stole the riff from the Damned.

  • im i the only one that hears Carol Deene's - Johnny Get Angry

  • never thought if it before but yes id say the yanks totaly ripped this one off fron jazz and the boys

  • The killing joke is slightly faster and nirvana add one more note to the guitar than killing joke. Anyways kurt claimed that he ripped off Boston's more than a feeling for smells like teen spirit. I think it was a coincidence though by the way the guy who made this video speed up Come As you are in the video go listen to the original version it's slower.

  • this is fucking flat-out plagiarism.

  • There's a robyn hitchcock song that used that riff before nirvana as well.

  • A bit fat raspberry to Nirvana :-P~~

  • ..having said that Grohl's drumming on the Killing Joke album was fantastic! So that kinda balances things out for me ;)

  • these guys suck ass wtf!!

  • Killing Joke are way superior to Nirvana.

  • @knobber if youre fucking stupid

  • Eihgties ca degage autrement!!

  • COME AS YOU ARE' C'EST MOU !! EIGHTIES CA PETTE AUTREMENT!

  • Baby come back R u kidding, and NIrvana is for fags

  • @theloya1965 Nirvana is for fags? (and I take offense to that term) I am a female who has been listening to them since at least 92...and I'm not a "fag....as you like to say. Trash trash trash. Oh....wait...I feel it now....I"M TURNING GAY AS I SPEAK....gee i guess your right, dick

  • @AngelVomit26 Well maube your problem is that you have lousy taste in music, tell you what, I wont use profanity, which I am good at,still Nirvana was overrated and I understand how people who get easily influenced can look at them as a special band. Nothing special about them. Even the Foo fighters are embarrisng. Revolutionary band, no, critics influencing stupid people yes.

  • Anybody gonna do a comparison of Killing Joke's guitar riff on "Eighties" to the bass line on the 1968 UK #1 single "Baby Come Back" by The Equals.

  • This video is the reason (here comes the hate) I don't think Nevermind is that great. Granted the second half of the album is brilliant but I always found the first half to be a bit lacking. Except for Breed maybe. In Utero was always better for me.

  • You guys DO realize that kurt killed himself because of the pending lawsuit by killing joke right?

    Killing Joke KILLED Kurt.

Looks like the JOKE was on them and they dropped the lawsuit. ha.ha.haaaa

  • @rickysolomon

theres substantial evidence that it was a murder

  • @hwral might be different bands but its hardcore ripped.

  • The header should be "Nirvana *song* sounds like Killing Joke *song*", because they are two entirely different bands. There are plenty of differences between the two songs either, but it seems that people take the convenience to ignore that, because it's more fun to accuse others.

  • who doesn't nirvana sound like

  • I like the Killing Joke, and love nirvana. The killing joke sucks for trying to sue nirvana. kj took the intro from The Damned's 1982 "LIfe goes on".

  • @DanielMM119 Killing Joke did what they had to do and they did it right

  • You should make a video about how the riff from "Smells Like Teen Spirit" sounds like Boston's "More Than A Feeling"

  • Well who gives a shit? Nirvana is better.

  • @Bonnogreen clean your mouth NOOB before u compare anyone WITH KILLING JOKE

  • @Bonnogreen haha SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIKE nerdvanna can suck a motha fuckin cock alice in chains is way better

  • @MrAicman

No one would give a shit about Alice in Chains if it wasn't for Nirvana, at least show respect.

  • @MrAicman do you jus go around trolling around "nirvana sucks" videos? i seen your retarded comments on 3 videos now, like wtf

  • Kurt meant to do this, he also got the idea of smells like teen spirit from Godzilla by blue oyster cult, you can tell if you listen to it

  • @FresnoMostwanted

Godzilla doesn't sound like Teen Spirit, what the hell...

  • killing joke! by a nose!

  • this has happened a million times throughout music history. on that note these are 2 totally different songs.

  • they sound the same, but only difference is Nirvana made a good song outta it, While Killing Joke is shit :P

  • @MichaelFindlater yeah really well who is is still going strong and has the respect of everyone from jimmie page of led zepp to metallica to smashing pumpkins nine inch nails and just about any other band who are "alternative" including the overated Nirvana) whose dave grohl played drums on KJ's 2003 album because he" worshipped them when he was growing up"

  • @salvadory still going strong? their non existent nowadays. nirvana is so much better than killing joke and nirvana isn't even around anymore!

  • @sickstar14 Screenname has nothing to do with niggerball! mahalo!

  • @sickstar14 really funny how they just sold out london 4 nights consectively and played in front of 40,000 in amsterdamn this summer in festival tours- have a documentary film coming out and are set to release another album- while kurts rotting in the ground and dave grohl plays cartoon poppunk for mall kids- and

  • @salvadory exactly, in london.

  • @salvadory Screenname has nothing to do with niggerball! mahalo!

  • @salvadory its my opinian, i dont think they sound good tbh

  • @MichaelFindlater well some people dont like the beatles but doesnt take away the fact that theyre genius- Nirvana were good but thats about it just good - not great- not mindblowing they were a good band in a shit time for music in my opinion- KJ isnt great either they are good but they mean it- the singer has led orchestras- composed symphonies - theres talent and character there- where kurt was a whiny snively junkie who couldnt handle fame and wrote himself into a grunge corner

  • @salvadory yeah i dont like the beatles, but i know that they were baisically the best band. still my opinian that nirvana were way better than killing joke

  • @MichaelFindlater id still they were both both good bands but killing joke have proved to be far more original and influential on all music including on nirvana

  • @salvadory Nirvana made Grundge known, if you know what i mean. like there is sound garden and pearl jam, but nirvana brought out the seatle sound from Nevermind where everyone was influenced in some way from kurts attitude and lyrics an that.

  • @MichaelFindlater and grunge in my opinion is nothing more than the mid 80s indie punk/ alternative of bands like husker du/ slowed down black flag- it was not new and besides grunge is dead- it was a fad- and worse it gave us nickleback and Bush. Im from Seattle- saw nrivana three weeks before the release of nevermind at the vogue in downtown seattle- hey very good live good energy but that is what id say - just a good band - the biggest influence it left was the death of hair metal thank god!

  • @MichaelFindlater i just wanted to add two things- mudhoney were the originators of seattle grunge and are in my opinion better than Nirvana- less commercial and more punk garage in spirit- plus they didnt take themselves seriously. Second Cobain left a bad influence in some ways via his drug abuse and suicide- in the end he caved in to all he claimed to fight and rally against- ill take someone positive like joe strummer (RIP)or KJ's jaz coleman who have real zest and passion for life and music

  • It's the same exact riff. How people can not notice this is beyond me.

  • As far as I'm concerned, the most relevant point here is that in the 80s and early 90s, bands still played instruments, could rock, could play dark, could come up with decent riffs, unlike the giant pile of pussy and non-education that passes for music today.

Frankly, other than the main riff, these songs are not at all alike, and that's why noone dissed Nirvana for it. KJ fans noticed it instantly, but Nirvana wrote great music otherwise, so they got a pass.

  • Everyone knows this already. It isn't a discovery. Jaz Coleman said he was preparing a settlement with Cobain right before his death. I don't think they ever got any royalties. Cobain was an admitted KJ fan, and Dave Grohl played drums on the album before last. There's no friction between these two. Comparing Nirvana to KJ is dumb. KJ is the premier industrial band of all time, and Nirvana is the premier grunge band of all time. You can still see KJ on tour - support them.

    No band like 'em.

  • Nirvana= SHIT

    KJ= Fucking gods

  • @vonpiro grow a dick and fuck your own asshole moron

  • @vonpiro Ignorant guy, both artists are legends.

  • @vonpiro other way around

  • What the Hell is Geordie wearing btw? He looks like a porno vicar!

  • if people would take the time to learn about music they would know what a big circle it makes. everybody rips off everybody. hell their is multiple types of music genres that just sample and chop up bits of other peoples work. whenever i see these so and so sounds like so and so videos i cant help but watch em and try and figure out how stupid the person who made this really is. my usual conclusion is very.

  • Yeah... "exactly".... fuck this shit

  • i doubt kurt ever even heard of this shit band, let alone the shit song

  • @brownybum123 You obviously don't know what the fuck you're talking about. The band had said before that they were one of their influences. Dave Grohl even played on 1 of Killing Jokes albums not too long ago. And if they were such a shit band, why steal from them? Know your shit before you talk shit!

  • Nice mash... they totally sound almost the same!

  • Killing joke got it from a song by the Damned called Life Goes On.

  • haha nirvana is a fuckin disgrace

  • @cossedge781

WTF?! disgrace? are you out of your mind?

  • Kurt's only known for getting sewed the most, and he just say it sounds like something else just to act like he didnt know koz he's a druggy

  • wow, you just called a punk rock star a druggy. your bad to the bone.

  • YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY,IVE JUST TURNED 14,AND LOT OF PEOPLE AT MY SCHOOL LIKE NIRVANA,BUT I KEEP TELLING THEM THAT NIRVANAS A COPY CATTER,I DO LIKE THEM BUT NOT TILL KILLING JOKE CAME,IVE OLY GOT NIRVANAS NEVERMIND CD AND KILLINGJOKES NIGHT TIME CD AND DEMOCRACY,LIVE TO ROCK,ROCK TO LIVE BABY =]

  • @siyill for 14 thats pretty cool but check out pandemonium and the 1982 kj cd revelations-- and In utero by nirvana is better than the overated nevermind- and you might like the damned's machine gun ettiquette album if you like both of these bands

  • I love Nirvana, and nothing will probably ever change that. Am I the only one that has noticed that the beginning drum beats of "Little Miss Lover" by Jimi Hendrix and "Scentless Apprentice" by Nirvana are almost identical.

  • they had almost really go to court for this, but couldnt do it anymore cause Kurt Died.

And the funny thing is that Dave Grhol the drummer of nirvana later joined killing joke for a time to record stuff.

    thats just ironic.

  • Sounds like echoes by pink Floyd

  • That's what I told some kid at my school and he just stared at me blankly. Wanker probably doesn't even know Killing Joke! smh!

  • Casualties, unknown soldier, Linkin park No more sorrow, it happens...

  • listen to the damned "life goes on".....

  • Breed and Very Ape are rip offs too, im just sayin :). but anyway, nirvana is a good fucking band with many original songs

  • Does it really matter? Kurt Cobain doesn't have a top to his head anymore this is all irrelevant.

  • kurt probably never even heard of this. i know I and everyone else i know hasnt sooooo fuck you

  • @XcoronaXtra

He definately did though. He even admitted that the riffs were similar after he recorded Come As You Are.

  • @XcoronaXtra bullshit he didnt - he wrote to them as a teen for their fan club but the truth is both songs resemble the damned life goes on from 1982- second yeah you never heard it because you probally think alternative music started with nirvana and not all the great 70s and 80s uk bands like the damned killing joke new model army etc etc who nirvana cant touch! Dave Grohl played on kjs 2003 album as a tribute-

  • this is definitely not a copy. the riffs are in the same key, yes but but the note changes don't match up. they are similar but i doubt Kurt even took in consideration (to not say ever heard) this song.

  • idiot ! ... haha ... you make me laugh !

  • I think he heard it somewhere, forgot about hearing it and then playing it and thinking it sounded really good. I accidentally find myself playing something and thinking, "Oh, that's a great riff!" Then later remembering where its from and being dissapointed. Maybe it happened to Kurt too.

  • yeah it stole the song of course, as it stole many songs like "come as you are", it's just a good cover band lol

  • One time I thought I wrote one of the coolest riffs ever. I was ready to write more parts and make into a song. But then in the process I realized the riff I made up was Heart's "Crazy On You." This kind of shit happens all the time with musicians. I wrote another song and took me a months to wonder if it had the L7 "Shove" riff in the song. I went to listen to the song and it did.

  • Kurt didn't steal it, you can find things that sound like things and are other things in all music, not all of its stolen, i find myself writing other peoples songs all the time, ALL THE TIME. I once wrote the begining to limelight by rush and a few other songs

  • well he must have realized it, because he got a lawsuit

  • Who ever made this totally sped up come as you are to make there point, to prove they sped it up play the exact same section of it they played, in-sync with the regular version of come as you are

  • i write music all the time.. its impossible to be 100% original!! but i often record my songs and later on i realize myself certain riffs sound almost exactly like something from one of my favorite bands.. and none of it is intentional.. at least on my part.. so i know how ez that is for that to happen... whether kurt took the basis of this song purposely or not.. COME AS YOU ARE is a better song

  • @kbwmetalhead i would disagree the power of the killing joke song is more intense and the lyrics summing up modern political strife and tension sum up our current state even more- so while the title might be eighties the expressions uttered apply to 2010. Come as you are is a good song though

  • if you learn somehow to play guitar and you will start write songs you will copy from others because you use what learn'd from other songs. thats why kurt stole this riff

  • Kurt Cobain is a genius you fucking idiot. The riff sounds similar, but not the exact same. Lots of bands take another bands riffs, take pieces of that riff and then form their own riff. Its been done for many years. Nirvana isn't shit, their always in the top 10 bands of all time and considered to be one of the best bands of all time.

  • @ericmeloman85 i agree with you 100%. the fact that they took "pieces" and then made a HIT of their own, is pretty much genius. I'd say it's a risk but how I feel about Nirvana is, I think they could have taken parts of ANY song and made it their own and made it sound amazing. But you are right, that's what people fail to realize. If we think about it, almost all rock songs are similar and "related" in some way.

  • @spdzne thats not entirely true, i mean you wouldnt say He Is Legend sounds like Clutch, or Alice In Chains sounds like Glassjaw. some do sound the same, like %5 and maybe less.

  • @Vasilios00 You misunderstand me.

  • @ericmeloman85 cobain wrote a dozen good songs passionate yes honest yes genius????? didnt live long enough to prove it!

  • @salvadory even in the short amount of time he lived. He proved he was a genius. Just listen to his songs man

  • @ericmeloman85 no people like tim buckley nick drake syd barett- arthur lee- were geniuses- Cobain was just good in a time when music seriously lacked direction or leaders- personally id say damon albarn from blur is more a genius than cobain- incredibly diverse (gorillaz- blur- the good the bad and the ugly) Dont get me wrong i like Cobain but ill never say he was genius just better than most!

  • @salvadory It's the good the bad & the queen, not ugly, and yes, Syd and Arthur are rare genius gems.

  • Yup, they sound alike. And we all thought Kobain was a genius.

  • Killing Joke "borrowed" the riff from a song called : "Life Goes On" by the Damned.

The Damned were kind enough not to sue Killing Joke for this indiscretion, so to speak ! However, Killing Joke, were not so kind to Nirvana, i.e. they took legal action against the Seattle trio !

  • Killing Joke influenced Nirvana, and so many other bands, the reason they sued Nirvana is because when confronted, Nirvana said they never heard of them, the riff does sound like many other riffs before, people argue that The Damned- life goes on sounds like the eighties riff, but also listen to The Equals- baby come back, they were a band from the 60s, the riff is like a evolution.....but Nirvana openly admitted that the riff is the same as Killing Joke's- Eighties

  • Kurt even says it in his journals. I have a copy and here is the exatc quote he wrote down

'the guitar part for come as you are is the same as a song called "eighties" by killing joke'

I like come as you are though as im a big nirvana fan :]

  • yeah,there was a funny situation.

when killing joke rang nirvana, nirvana`s manager was on the phone.

they said "nirvana stole our song"

manager said "ermmm, they never heard of you"

the funny thing is that nirvana sent a christmas postcard to killing joke a year before

  • NIRVANA way overrated...they simply suckk...

  • hahahahhahha, yeah, that's it, over rated, wake the fuck up from from your dream world.

  • No, Nirvana is shit. Killing Joke has a perfect intro with drums, bass, and the guitars. And Nirvava? A shit intro that was only played more slow.

  • @Victoravra

    Agreed

  • @Victoravra

Fuck Nerdvana. sick of other bands ripping off others.

  • dude Nirvana doesnt sound like them, just come as you are does dumb shit, name your vids. right man, and hell i never heard of Killing Joke untill this vid.

  • @umitsjustgrunge cause youre an idiot- i suppose you never heard of the damned new model army black flag dead kennedys the germs the jam either- only ! Killing joke have been around for thirty years - Nirvana were nothing more than a good band during a shitty era of music thats why they seemed so great because everything at that time sucked monkey balls!

  • @salvadory no, actually there were a ton of really good bands at the time nirvana were around. further proving how great they were.

  • @sickstar14 please name these great bands- great bands like the doors the clash the pistols the stones the who- the jam the damned pink floyd the beatles- yes they were just a lot of worthy bands like that in the 90s wasnt there- i think not!

  • @salvadory are you for real? the 90's was a great time for music! just to name a few: alice in chains, pearl jam, smashing pumpkins, soundgarden, stone temple pilots, radiohead, foo fighters, nine inch nails. i could keep going for an hour, but i won't.

  • @sickstar14 you named one radiohead who i think are unique and NIN are killing jokes grandkids(ask trent reznor how much he respects KJ)- the rest are complete shit- alice in chains- soundgarden -foo fighters- seriously foo fighters- STP= are you fucking joking? do any of those bands compare to the great bands of the past think not-

  • @sickstar- best times for music 1960s- early 70s - psychedelic funk soul reggae rock- stevie wonder serge gainsbourg who hendrix dylan beatles floyd doors stones temptations- Bowie nick drake moody blues stooges mc 5 then punk- clash pistols damned jam then came the crap 80s(digital synth and bon jovi and crap 90s( alt rock)- thankfully things look a little brighter this century so far

  • Nirvava made it better? HAHAHAHA

Nirvana is shit, and Kurt Cobain can't create something.

  • Sorry if you can not admit it but Nirvana did make it better. Hey, I like Killing Joke as well but "Come as you are" is perfect. Kurt Cobain took a perfect guitar riff and made a perfect song.

  • agreed!

  • @Victoravra

not only that have cause the death of the once great music.

  • Nirvana stole it and made it better so what?

  • who doesnt get ideas from other songs? and for those who were saying Nirvanas best songs were rip offs from other songs, they only had 2 songs (Smells like teen spirit and Come as you are) which the riff sounded similar to the song they got the idea from which were More than a feeling and eighties.

  • its similar. But its not like they completly copied it. Who doesnt get ideas for riffs or anything else from other song?

  • Coincidence.

  • Ha, the most overrated band ever versus the most underrated ! Guess who's who.

  • well kurt often confessed he was plaguing songs, and he just didn't give a fuck. i don't give a fuck too. :-p

  • Yeah, great video compilation to emphasize the point. But Geordie Walker told me where HE took the riff from. True story. Hint: He got the riff from the bass line of a song first released in 1966 by a North London band that did not chart. After the original original reached #1 in Belgium and The Netherlands, it was re-issued on 1 May 1968 and reached #1 in the UK Singles Chart on 3 July 1968 spending three weeks there. In all the song stayed in the UK Top 75 for 18 weeks. Name that tune!

  • ohhh poor curt...he realised he was plagiarizing, but he finished and recorded the song anyway..he subconsciously "rewrites" songs, and than consciously tells about that in his diary...he didn't want to relese it,but the bad boys from the recording company made him...probably that's why he killed himself,it's a pitty he didn't do it a few years earlier

  • I think Kurt subconsciously "rewrites" songs. I do it a lot too when attempting to write a song. Then I realize later "Oh shit, I copied ____"

  • hahaha it happened to my bros friend, strange enough the riff sounded like heart shaped box...

  • Kurt Cobain didn't want to release Come As You Are because he thought it sounded too much like the Killing Joke song. But his label wanted to release it because the saw it being a successful single. Come As You Are is a way better song anyways.

  • nirvana probably knew it sounded similar but i don't think they flat out ripped it! and if you do want to blame someone for ripping the riff, blame killing joke because eighties sounds way more like life goes on by the damned then come as you are!!!!!

  • this is some fucking manipualtion killing joke is too slow and come as you are runs faster

  • eh, not exactly the same..but it's pretty close.

  • Kurt Cobain said in his Journal,

"I realize that most of my supposed 'hits' sound like shit that's already been done before. It's all lame, music has just become plagarism of itself. Come as You are sounds like Killing Joke, and Smells like Teen Spirit sounds like (ACDC song). That's why I tell you to not learn songs, but make them yourselves. You play everyone else's and you never get your own style."

So I think Kurt noticed it as well, but didn't steal.

  • Which AC/DC song?

  • Although I hate Kurt Cobain for making trashy, repackaged bullshit music, at least he had the sense and intelligence to admit he did so and that the rest of contemporary music has become bullshit and he feels guilty for riding on his fame with copied BS like all the others. At least for this, I respect the man Kurt Cobain.

  • you must be black!

  • @ThatRantKid actually smell like teen spirit came from more than a feeling by boston

  • ok, so what if the damned, killing joke, and nirvana all copied each other...... who took the riff and made it the best?

    nirvana

  • @hotwheelguy4

    anything to defend nirvana.

1984 vs. 1991. which came before?

  • like i said.... so what if they copied each other

Nirvana made the best out of the riff

  • @hotwheelguy4 totally disagree the kj version not only rocks but the lyrics apply to tthe current world and political climate as it did back in 1984-5 when it was released- come as you are is good but KJ's line " get out of my way im not for sale no more" sums up the music industry in a nutshell- perhaps Cobain should have listened to their words and not the riff!

  • They're not that similar. Killing Joke ripped off "The Damned" - Life Goes On". Look it up.

  • yes its verry similar but its two diferent guitar riffs...

  • Its a pretty standard cord progression...

  • Killing Joke is known for influence many rock bands...so, it can be a copy and how andrerockmetal said...Nirvana was a band influenced by punk..........so, to all Nirvanamaniacs, dont feel bad...this can be a copy.

  • cobain doesnt suck. hes not that good at guitar are singing actually, but he revolutionalized music likeno one ever had.

  • Fascist and pro-Soviet???!!! I don't think either claim is right especially not both at the same time! Killing Joke have a very strange philosophy and certainly like to provoke a reaction but I think you're talking shit to be honest.
