I actually didn't like this ending at all. I was seriously expecting Blu to make a choice wether to stay in Rio or go back to Minnesota, or the alternative: Linda either letting Blu have the choice to come back with her, or just letting him stay, which would have resulted in a heartwarming success that would make you cry. Instead, they showed an unclear ending, not truthfully showing you him staying in Rio. Instead they skipped the heartwarming nonsense and showed it in a very unrevealing way.

They are there to assist in conveying the point the author is trying to make by using a visual feature.
