Love your channel :) About the "Leafy Pie", that may refer to a kind of french pastry that is called "Mille-feuille" (meaning something like "a thousand leafs" in english, i think)
Check the cake appearance on google and you will see some similarities eheh ;)
Holy crap!! You could make a business of consulting, to make linguistic corrections to the corporate advertising all the way down to the mom & Pop stores in a neighborhood. You really do not look good if your language in promotions are in correct syntax and tense, not to mention sentence construction. I could make a living doing that.
You have no idea how often people say this... It's already been mentioned lots of times before that the companies don't care. Just having an english slogan makes your company look cool and hip. It doesn't matter if it makes no sense, no one can read it anyway. :P
this "sincere thanks for your sorrow" thing... XD well... my Japanese teacher told us that you would say "sumimasen" when receiving a present, because you are sorry for the other person to be bothered by getting this present for you. (or sth like that?!) maybe that's meant with "sorrow", this kind of bothering to get the present? I don't know. Just a thought :)
still hilarious, I love Japanglish. Even better than Germanglish^-^
Tanoshii moomin ikka is the anime version of the moomins if you were wondering, done back in 1990. They've done reruns on Finnish tv ever since. The second season was really bad though, almost like a sacrilege lol.
I remember the Mumin cartoon characters shown in 0:25 sec used to be on the standard ATM banking cards for Hokuriku Bank in the late 90's - probably still are....
Kobe has a traditionally sustained flavor? Leafy Pie? The Affection - Sincere Thanks for your sorrow. The health tree makes a happy life. Love it. It will make me careful when translating.
0:27 I used to watch those white little trolls as a kid. They have a cute finnish accent. I don't know if they have a english name, but in my native language (swedish) they're called "Mumintrollen". Fun to see they found their way to japan! :D (apparently they're called Moomin in english)
@bonecrime Moomins are actually widely popular in Japan, there's a shop dedicated for Moomin merchandise and even a Moomin cafe :) In finnish Moomins are called "muumi"
All of the examples you showed in this video are the English versions of the lettering. Many Japanese speakers are very fond of our language so they translate their hiragana, romaji, and katakana into English. It doesn't really make sense until an English speaker translates it even more so that it makes sense. Also, it's still the same meaning in both Japanese and English with some slight changes. Although, I find Japan-glish very humerous and amusing. :3
I bet it surprised you even more when you saw on the package that it was made by Morinaga, of all companies. "But I thought they made sweets! Now they're making leafy pies?"
This video made me laugh~!! I love the Japan-glish videos!! ^o^ Makes me smile. And that word "happy" should be used more often. Just saying "Happy~" makes me happier. XD Seriously, try it. ;)
I wonder if when you take out the drycapot bag in front of the "NOoooooo! drugs" sign, someone who's more familiar with drug slang might think you're actually gonna eat or smoke some marijuana. And then they'd freak out. That'd be hilarious, hehe
Does anyone else here in the states know if the original Denny's gives out "Christmas presents" on their menus during the holiday season? I've never been there around this time so I have no idea.
And last but not least, "Tired of cookies whose flavor keeps changing with every passing year? Try Drycapot! The traditionally-sustained flavor will keep you coming back for more even when you're 60."
My best friends fiance' said he opened a coffee shop/bakery in Osaka about ten years ago called "Hiroshima Happy Bar and Cake"...the log on the store front was an exploding coffee mug and bean cake with smiling faces!!! and supposedly no one ever said anything negative and it did well until he had to move to Hawaii so it was sold. No more "Hiroshima Happy bar. :(
Didn't want you to loose a playlist, if they start hiring American writers... Just wondering! =) Thanks for the response! Have a "Happy Life!" Ha ha! Japan is awesome just the way it is!
They won't =]. My Japanese professor's mother and sister work in this industry, and when you give them the correct sentence or words, they say "Doesn't sound right" lol!. There's a certain image, and sound they go for. They just don't care if it's "right"...iono, just certain concepts they wanna represent, so they just throw them onto the paper willy nilly. lol
@MrOmniblast That's the way it should stay then... That's what makes japan neat! I remember hearing that Japanese people don't like to correct each other too much... Guess it's kinda rude??? If we tried to make everything the same... it would be pretty boring! Thanks for the reply!
ur videos are the best coz u bring 2gether the 2 greatest countries (my opinion) in the world, Talkin bout an epic country in my accent, ur voice is sooo awesome.
Is there a reason why they use English so much in Japan? Is there a need to communicate with people who don't speak Japanese, or is it sort of a cool thing to do? Here in Michigan, well on the west side of the state anyway, you wont ever see much that isnt written in English other than a resteraunt or a specialty store. Thank you as always for the great videos. *deep bow*
Is there any jobs for Americans to write english saying's for these companies??? It's fun the way it is on the stuff your showing us... But I wonder if anyone would hire for something like that? I'll be waiting over here with my honor, for you to respond! Ha ha! Great Vid!!!!

This is the second video where Moomin has been somewhere in the background.

Moomin is pretty popular, moreso for younger children...not as big as something like Doraemon but it is still a novelty.
