the bit at 4:24 actually gives me chills. its so beautiful. the whole thing is. i just wish there was a clearer version of this set. i would be so happy
your in luck there is a better recording of this set (audio only) he released jazzfest as an album & its really flash actually, if you want it send me your email & ill send it to you mate.
@SKRRBOI Is that really why he names it?, i meen it makes sense and all but for me, i always just assumed he called it ocean because well, this song just takes me away to a different place, a smoother calmer place, like a soft beach or ocean.. thats how i see it anyway
The great thing about the wordless song is that we make it relate to whatever we feel at a first listen. No one can tell you your belief is wrong or less significant than another. If you have ears and a soul than this song should take you to another place. Seeing as it never sounds exactly the same live it is like the ocean in the sense that sometimes it is calm and soothing and then other times full of energy, movement and power. A symphony for any an ear. Absolute pure euphoria 8)
Can someone tell me what equipment he uses to get the kind of dreamy tone from the guitar? cuz I know its not just his guitar. for example: what sound he makes at 1:49
@Dariohoho1 emotion. that sound 1:49 is simply feedback. Plug yor guitar into an amp and at a certain volume, etc, and I think it's the G string that hums. John has just found a way to use it as an element for this.
haha. I can totally empathize! I get some goose bumps myself when the song builds toward the end. Amazing! And it definitely is a song that can be enjoyed whether one is down or in good spirits!
i still remember the first time i heard this song two years ago. its one of those songs that you just cant believe. you can listen to it when your down in the dumps, or having the best day of your life and still get the powerful emotion outof it. i get the chills everytime it reaches the high point of the song. everytime
do you want to know why we all like him so much (apart from the obvious talent and feeling?)
no matter how many different versions of the same song, or indeed the same version on a different stage etc, he always loves it as if it was the first time he played it right, other instrument players will know what i mean more so thatn the normal viewer, but its all relavent much love<3

Ole Mr. Butler is a cornball for sure but he can wail on that acoustic. Yes, 11 string, I forget the reasoning he had for it but it went something like he thought it sounded fuller without one of the strings. Wail on you cheesy fuck.
its cuz the high G (the one he takes off) is the highest and its in the middle of the guitar. therefore he takes it off cuz he doesnt lik the sound of it
i hate the sound of the g octave for some reason it makes the whole guitar seem out of tune because its too high. i can see why he did because i did before i even heard of this guy.
this was the first time i'd seen him. this song in particular made me a fan for life, the way the sky opened up when the climax of the song was happening... just a transformational performance!
@Edjan031 Ah well. I've heard that the stuff on it is pretty epic. I want a copy of it, or just to hear it. I think it'd be an experience that i would enjoy :)
@BigCanOfBeans I think, that I'll upload the whole album then, It's not he best quality, it's 192Kbps, 'cause I think You know, that "Searching for Heritage" is cassette. So yeah, I'll upload the songs as soon as possible (:
@Edjan031 OMFG you are a legend!!! ::D Lol yeah, Cassettes do have that issue of poor quality - and considering it was done a while ago would do a bit of quality damaging lol. Meh, quality doesn't defeat the awesomeness of John Butler.
looks way cooler without the dreads,,just saw him 2 nights ago at council bluffs ia,,,got my picture taken with him and what an awesome show he's the best
dumbass.. this guy knew what he did in every way.. he plays that song in an other version.. and that because he want to play it in that way.. do u have only a minimum of an idea what that guy do on his guitar?? i play the guitar and i know what a kind of live is gone by while he only practising that harmonics.. and the covers are like that song couse someone covered THAT version and not the max sessions version..
im a dumbass? im a fan of him for at least 5 years now. i know ocean and i can play it on guitar. ive got the original studio version of this song. i like it that hes playing it diffrent every time. but that means at the same time that hes changing the song. since he cut off his dreads he changed the whole flow of the song.
well no need to blame the cutting of his dreads for the way he performs. again, its his song so he can explore it and perform it the way he wants...the whole vibe to this song is that he performs it slightly different each time but it still emits a beautiful sound. its a different version of the song, but it still works.
He reminds me of Linkin Park

It is a 12 string guitar however he removes both courses of the G string leaving him with 10 strings and no open 3rd between G and B.

No he doesn't, he removes one G string. 11 in total-look it up.
