I'm a novice to NHL and the rules of it but can someone answer my question on how and why these player can get away with fighting and not be stopped by the referee or be disciplined by the NHL. Isn't sport all about fair play and sportsmanship?

@Bonaviaboy Hockey is the fastest game there is,you have huge guys flying along at high speeds and it can get violent at times.Fighting is allowed but the combatants are penalized for it.It has always been a part of the sport and just like MMA or boxing,the refs will allow the men to settle their problems right there on the ice.Unlike in baseball or basketball,these guys really do fight and also play injured,its about being a part of a team and not just wanting to win,but going to war to win.

@IKBEASTLX Fights are a major part of hockey, really. Almost every team has an enforcer, and they all have one or two guys who can fight. Think about it: it helps to keep the game clean. Players are much less likely to land cheap shots if they know that they will get the s**t beaten out of them by a 250 pound guy the next time they step on the ice. It is a stronger deterrent than 2 minutes in the penalty box, and it gives the fans some entertainment.
