It's funny AND true! Blackbeard put hemp ropes in his beard and lit them up. This a) created a constant cloud of scary smoke around him and b) made him partially high before battle.

I imagine he carried 12 pistols because they were wildly inaccurate and unlike modern pistols only carried one muzzle loaded shot that needed a primed pan. When you are attacking a ship the last thing you want to do is reload your pistol when others are trying to kill you. Having 12 guns ready is most useful.

@schizoidboy highly debatable. In confined Space like onboard ships carrying 12 pistols that usually weigt 2-3 pound each and are between 15 and 20" long is more than cumbersome

@LutzDerLurch True when it comes to real history and what is told it is probable that he might not have carried all those pistols, of course modern soldier in combat often carry most of the gear they might need and most of it is distributed on their body, but it does all add up when you have to be physically active. and the swords they carried were longer and equally heavy. But it is all debatable.

Modern Soldiers, as well as those of the old Days, carry what they need because they need it. On a Ship, you dont need to carry your Provisions, etc, as all that is inside the Hold. @LutzDerLurch I will admit this that pistols in those days were largely the weapons of calvary and they would have been carried in saddle holsters, and these i know were large, as for naval pistols i would have to do some more research on my own (though the Scots were known for making a smaller pistol made of metal that would have been carried into battle - I saw this at West Point Museum)

But it is highly inconvinient and encumbering, and also very unusual. I am, though, a Reenactor and Muzzleloader, thus I have a basic idea what is cumbersome. in Blaclbeards Case, I can imagine him (6"4') carrying many Pistols, as a means of appearing most dreadfull to his foes. But e.g. most Illustrations and Descriptions are more like 6 Pistols.
