Is that the version with an effects loop? I'm guessing it is if your running a volume box through the loop to cut the volume down conning from the power tubes. Those volume boxes are robbing the fatter sound you get from the post gain (power tube) turned up. I have this reissue head without the loop.
Funny I've used a volume box in a Bugera plexi clone and ran it through the back of the effects loop...The same set up seen here, differant name on the box but same concept.
It cuts into the power section tubes and only allows pre amp tubes to be heard. Power tubes give you the fatter sound combined with pre amp tubes.
I eventually bought a Marshall Power-brake and ended up blowing a power transformer in the Bugera Plexi...Sold the amp for a $100 as is and sold the Power brake for $150...
@JBL8863 I agree totally that the volume box seemed to reduce gain and fullness, the power brake i bought afterwards worked far better, but again, was never as good as actually cracking the amplifier.
As for bugera, all i have to say is anything made by beringer i would steer clear of for serious use!...no offence.
This marshall never blew up from use with a power brake, although i ended up selling it as i wasnt really using it to its full potential at the time, regret it now though!
@simonbeckwith To bad you sold it I would have offered a trade for my EVHiii head I have now...I have it for sale on Craigslist for $1300. No issues still in very new condition. I'd preffer something like this over the 3 channels and 18 knobs I have to look at.
Simple is better for me as my eye sight is getting tougher to see every knob on it.
@simonbeckwith Hmm that would be better because that one has a master volume. I'll be using it with a band so it will be loud, but not like a plexi loud!
that little box on top of the amp is pretty much acting like a master volume, and it sounds like the fx loop is before the phase inverter but could be wrong, the phase inverter tube distorts alot in these amps (especialy if you have a ppimv which cuts down negative feedback somehow and causes the PI to give more distortion)...anyway i wouldnt want to run my delay if later stages distort, cuz we've all tried delay before distortion and know it sucks.
cheers man, yh it does sound great, it doesnt have a serial number as it was one of the first batches to come out of korea, so ive been told by tokai themselves. very good quality great sounding guitars. i think the ls48 is a similar spec. its a maple body and neck with sycamore top and rosewood fingerboard. tokai paf4 pickups
a power brake is the only way without using a pedal. the box on top of the amp is a sort of power brake that runs through the fx loop. not as good as a thd hot plate though
@stratmaniac the power brake goes between the head and cab. the fx loop is on the back of the amp i believe it is between the pre amp and the power amp
@simonbeckwith yea if it is a series fx loop... but you wouldn't put a power brake or any other attenuator in the loop. The whole point of an attenuator is that you can get power amp distortion but the attenuator limits the volume after the power amp.
basically the amp has 2 channels but you can switch between them. one channel is very bright, the other is quite muddy. theyre not overly useable on their own, well they are, but theyre not...BUT you can jump lead them (hence the extra lead) and therefore blend the two channels together, which makes it sound awesome
@evhfrankie Using only the amp (I have the 1989 first run of Reissues without FX loop) ... you can't :D
Either you use a overdrive / distortion pedal, or you have a (PPIMV) Master Volume installed or you use a power attenuator (or all of it), all of which will result in a sound that is different from the amp's natural distortion at normal dB levels.
@clem070605 You can "jump" the channels and use the 2 individual volume controls to blend them and get different tones. It's a very common thing on the 4 input marshalls.
@ZakkHendrix666 ive not played a 59plexi so i cant really answer that, i know you would get to full saturation quicker with this one as its 50w and the 59 is 100w, and that 100w would seriously ruin buildngs to get full gain out of it!! unless you're using an attenuator of some sort. i would imagine theres not a great deal in it gain wise though.
I love mine! Toss a Barber DDSS or Small fry on the front- Run amp clean as can be. Nice delay.....and you'll have the TRUE Church of Tone goin' on!!!! Great vid- thanks
well, this was only filmed a year or so agao so i would imagine it is the same. and this amp was bought new, not a second hand amp, shoiuld be the same one mate
Hmmm i wonder.. i've been checking for an 1987x , i dont know for sure if this is the same , but the 1987x that can be ordered at Thomann D.o.T DE isnt the same head as this one right?
Would be great to get answer of that question, since i'am having some thoughts of order from there :)
@Mr5150II this one is just the amp by itself. the powerbrake i used was rubbish and sucked loadsa tone. check out my other video where i demo some pedals and the amp with a good power brake, ull hear the difference, sounds awesome!
loud doesnt even come close!!! its crazy loud, but sounds amazing! defo look into gettin a powerbrake/attenuator of some sort otherwise you really will blow out the windows!
ive not tried the jtm45, but it is lower wattage, so will break up/overdrive quicker than the 87x. if you want a good loud clean sound, then the 1987x would be better, or even a fender twin or something? overdrive pedals like a tubescreamer, lovepedal purple plexi or the fulltone ocd would also suit the smooth overdrive you are after, possible even the blackstar ht drive, that also has a valve in the pedal
u might be able to with an a/b switcher plugged into both inputs, but it wouldnt really be worth it on this amp as the 2 channels seperately are quite hard to use, hence why most people jump them and mix the two together. worth a try i suppose. could always use the amp clean and run a lovepedal purple plexi or a fulltone ocd or something similar in front of it?
Presence 0 Bass 10 Mid 10 Treble 1. Power Tap set to 4
The power tap seemed to reduce the gain a little bit, so i bought a marshall power brake, this was a loads better n u can get a decent amount of gain out of it. wish i never sold it...might have to get another in the future and mod it so i dont need a power brake, those things are massive. check my other video with the pedals, u can hear the amp by itself with the power brake in that video to hear the difference
the speakers actually do make a difference, especially their wattage. the harder you drive them, they distort. For example, 30watt speakers break much better than 70's.
1960AX its a bit priceyer (is that a word? :P) but its the better of the two in terms of construction and speakers. of course you could make an AX be an AV by replacing the speakers and grille cloth. but im pretty sure theres some difference in the wood of the cabinet.
nope, that was just the amp.....i think with this video, it was just my tokai love rock, straight into the amp, using a power brake to keep the volume down a bit. i miss this amp!
the vintage 30s are really nice. the 25w greenbacks wud be perfect for this amp as thats what they used originally. the speakers im using are 75w speakers, and tehy are equally good, all made by celestion
Im thinking of getting an earlier one that has no fx loop as i dont use them. However with a marshall power brake do you need a fx loop? or how do you plug one of those in?.... Oh but its a sweet sounding amp!! XD
ear splittingly loud. if 50 watts doesn't sound like a lot compared to 100, a good blast through one of these bad boys will set you straight hahaha. but yeah seriously, they need to be cranked loud as hell, WAAAY past house levels, and way past appropriate levels for anything other than a medium sized venue. i'd highly recommend a power brake. im using a vox ac30h2l, which is only 30 watts, and even that is just way beyond tolerable volumes when you crank it.
i wouldnt recommend it tbh!! that sort of volume will hurt people lol! i had mine upto 6 without the power brake and i was shouting to my mate sitting less than 10 feet away and he couldnt hear me, if that helps!? you need a power brake!! the thing i found with it, even with the power brake, it just sounds so much better the louder it gets, i dunno if thats coz the speakers are working harder? might be worth trying the amp thru some greenbacks, i had g75's in my cab
the powerbrake sits between the head and cab. so you plug the head into the powerbrake, and then out of the powerbrake into the cab. u cud probs get someone to disconnect the fx loop part, it sounded quite noisey when i tried it, and teh amp takes pedals up front fine, ive done another video showing some pedals with the amp
@t25dubber fair play, they a5re also effing awesome amps. ive got a dsl at the moment and loving it!! just need to sort out another cab and ill stick some vids up of it
@t25dubber, you can always get a MV mod added -- it's possible to add a MV to a 50 or 100 watt Marshall and not sacrifice tone when the volume control is turned all the way up. Or a power attenuator....
Regardless, I have a JCM 900 SL-X (pure tube, no clipping diodes). I replaced the transformer with a replica of a 1959SLP transformer, and replaced some resistors too add some more headroom because it too gainy too fast... the amp was pretty good before, absolutely killer now!
Hey man....... Great thanks to you for this beautiful video.......I'm so happy that i finally find sound of my dreams which starts at 3:05..... I totally want this amp!!!! It sounds so amazingly...I must listen it over and over again!!! Only one think annoy me..... Why on earth is ti just one chanell amp???? hehe :-) never mind i also plan to get it :-) Nice job man!!!
the power tap i use in this video i still have and am gonna sell on ebay, so could sort something out on paypal? it works fine and just plugs into the fx loop:£25, or you could spend anywhere from £130 for a power soak/attenuator. they seem to work a little better, but depends on your budget really. if you can afford it and want an overdriven tone all the time, i would say use a power attenuator, if you just want to have tube breakup at a reasonably useable volume, the power tap will work fine
pretty good tbh, i didnt really test it out too much with single coils. but there was a significant gain reduction when using my mates fender tele, so i would guess it would therefore stay cleaner for longer. with a les paul. it would start to break up around 2-3, with single coils, probly 3-4 maybe 5. but that is also incredibly loud without an attenuator. i got it up to 6 and it was LOOOOUUUUD!!!
i know...you dont need to remind me...thing is, i just didnt have the room after i finished uni, so it had to go....id defo buy another one tho!!! an engl combo is doing the job for now :) i miss the vintage tone....maybe a jmp combo next!?!?!?
lol u sold it......... dumbass..... dont take it personally but marshalls fucking rule and ur playing matches with them so well......... fantastic playing!@!@!
yeh i believe so. i think if you really want that malmsteen sound, you also need to buy a neumann u87 mic, which is silly money!! but yeh, it was a great amp, i dont have it anymore :(
i cant remember which albums he used them, if not all of them, but i remember reading somewhere he wouldnt record with any other mic. theyre pretty sick mics to be fair!! spose it just adds to his sound?
Way nice tones buddy...Jumpering the channels gives a very balanced eq, a more low mid quality to this amplifier in my opinion...I liked it very much...Thank you for your sharing and keep on rockin'
cheers mate, yeh it was a great amp, i dont have it anymore. Band stuff changed etc so i bought an Engl Screamer 50 which is awesome, might have to do some vids of that soon too!
basically the amp is 2 channels, but they're not switchable, 1 is 'bright' and 1 is 'normal'. there are 4 inputs, 2 for 'bright' and 2 for 'normal',1 is high sensitivity and 1 is low sensitivity, for each channel? u can then blend these 2 channels together to create a better sound, in my opinion. i find the bright channel is a little too bright by itself, and the normal is quite woolly by itself, but together, they sound awesome, so thats what that white lead does, blends the 2 channels together
ive had 2 off there, i use the marshall pb100 (i think thats what its called) powerbrake. its really good and wont harm your amp. the best one for marshall amps. i think i paid about £130 both times
hello ... you can tell me where can I find a dampener as your volume? I too have a marshall 1987x + dod 250 preamp .... but I need an attenuation because I put the marshall at the most ... THANKS
Yeah Power Attenuators don't damage the amp (not a well built one) But those power taps, I am not too sure about..Does it go through the effects loop?
i know this is a dumb question put does that power tap act as an attenuater or as an external master volume. because power attenuaters can damage the amp and i need something to significantly cut the volume. thanks
A proper power attenuator will NOT damage an amp any more than just playing really freaking loud. As long as a suitable impedence matched load is connected to the amp, it doesn't care if it's pushing speakers or a dummy load.
the power tap is basically a volume control that runs through the fx loop. tob honest it also sucks gain aswell, im not overly keen on it, hence whyi bought a proper marshall power brake, and the amp sounds a million times better :)
might be a retarded question...but.......is this any good for metal tones?? i love rock blues but...also play a few heavier songs with my band so...just wondering if it does.. killswitch engages cover of holy diver etc....ive got a ibanez ts9dx and a jackson dkgmt with emg 85 in bridge and 81 in neck for that song and one or two others we do..otherwise its les paul all the time...im a BIG fan of kossoff..so thats how i like to play most of the time
ive got an mxr custom shop gt od pedal, which is basically the same as a tubescreamer, and you can get some pretty heavy sounds using it as a gain boost, and the amp has loads of bite, so helps stuff cut through nicely. i think this amp with a pedal in front of it would be fine, especially if it's only a couple of songs. You should try the mxr zakk wylde pedal, ive heard good things about them too although ive not tried one myself yet....soon hopefully!!
it was a crappy 4x10, now got a jcm900 2x12 cab. i dont think the sound is fizzy at all, any amp from jcm800 to present day by marshall is fizzy, this is jus crunch!!
if u wanna hear a good demo of the VM, click the top link on the right of the 87x by 'proguitarshopdemos' and then the same ppl do a VM demo too, prob the best one ive seen. ive not played one myself.
check out my other video of this amp, got myself a better cab and better power brake, sounds much better, plus im demo-ing a few od/boost pedals, as this is how the amp seems to work best.
No, no, no. I try the vintage modern head... very bad for me. if you are looking for the true vintage sound of 70' marshall head you can only opt for1987x (50 w) or 1959 super lead (100 w). Unfortunately it has only a channel, but there are thousand ways to pass from clean to distorted equally
thats a very useful demo clip , only thing stopping me from buying one of those heads is the volume issue , i understand the volume control goes from quiet to window breaking very quickly indeed, do you find this to be the case ?
i use mine, with the power brake, overdiven and with an mxr custom shop od pedal as a gain boost for lead stuff, the amp distortion is really fat sounding, great for rhythm stuff, and the pedal sounds quite thin, but works great for lead stuff helping ya licks cut thru etc
Is that the version with an effects loop? I'm guessing it is if your running a volume box through the loop to cut the volume down conning from the power tubes. Those volume boxes are robbing the fatter sound you get from the post gain (power tube) turned up. I have this reissue head without the loop.

@rodolforibas yeh it is miced up, only a cheap one, and yeh it doesnt sound as good as it could due to the power tap attenuator (rubbish!!)

@shred5 I decided it would not be practical for my needs. I needed a MV so I got a JCM900 which is perfect for me.
t25dubber 1 year ago
@t25dubber fair play, they a5re also effing awesome amps. ive got a dsl at the moment and loving it!! just need to sort out another cab and ill stick some vids up of it
simonbeckwith 1 year ago

For your information JIMMYJIBLETS, Malmsteen uses two Marshall 1987x heads with Marshall 1960A and 1960B cabinets loaded with Celestion 75W speakers.
YngwieFromFinland 2 years ago
Im thinking about getting a 1987x at some point and an a power break, where could I get a power tap?
UltimateFreerider 2 years ago
the power tap i use in this video i still have and am gonna sell on ebay, so could sort something out on paypal? it works fine and just plugs into the fx loop:£25, or you could spend anywhere from £130 for a power soak/attenuator. they seem to work a little better, but depends on your budget really. if you can afford it and want an overdriven tone all the time, i would say use a power attenuator, if you just want to have tube breakup at a reasonably useable volume, the power tap will work fine

How is the clean headroom on this amp with single coils?
MaddMan95 2 years ago
pretty good tbh, i didnt really test it out too much with single coils. but there was a significant gain reduction when using my mates fender tele, so i would guess it would therefore stay cleaner for longer. with a les paul. it would start to break up around 2-3, with single coils, probly 3-4 maybe 5. but that is also incredibly loud without an attenuator. i got it up to 6 and it was LOOOOUUUUD!!!
simonbeckwith 2 years ago
i know...you dont need to remind me...thing is, i just didnt have the room after i finished uni, so it had to go....id defo buy another one tho!!! an engl combo is doing the job for now :) i miss the vintage tone....maybe a jmp combo next!?!?!?
simonbeckwith 2 years ago
lol u sold it......... dumbass..... dont take it personally but marshalls fucking rule and ur playing matches with them so well......... fantastic playing!@!@!
Cgolfsoccerguy 2 years ago
is this reissue of mk2 that malmsteen uses????
malmsteen80 2 years ago
yeh i believe so. i think if you really want that malmsteen sound, you also need to buy a neumann u87 mic, which is silly money!! but yeh, it was a great amp, i dont have it anymore :(
simonbeckwith 2 years ago
but this is a mic recording
what does it have to do with malmsteen sound ,man?
can u explain more
malmsteen80 2 years ago
i cant remember which albums he used them, if not all of them, but i remember reading somewhere he wouldnt record with any other mic. theyre pretty sick mics to be fair!! spose it just adds to his sound?

malmsteen uses the 1959slp if im not mistaken. they sound identical though so there's really no difference. his is just louder
JIMMYJIBLETS 2 years ago
i think the 59slp is 100w whereas the 87x is 50w, thats the only difference really...liek you said, same sound, just louder!
simonbeckwith 2 years ago
Way nice tones buddy...Jumpering the channels gives a very balanced eq, a more low mid quality to this amplifier in my opinion...I liked it very much...Thank you for your sharing and keep on rockin'
picassographic 2 years ago
cheers mate, yeh it was a great amp, i dont have it anymore. Band stuff changed etc so i bought an Engl Screamer 50 which is awesome, might have to do some vids of that soon too!
simonbeckwith 2 years ago
best marshall clean sound right at the start!
SlashLesPaul321 2 years ago
Which cab is it?
elbenaso 2 years ago
an old marshall valvestate, it sucked serious arse!
simonbeckwith 2 years ago
What happens when you link the 2 inputs together with the white cable ( sorry if it sounds like a stupid question! )
AssassinSteven 2 years ago
basically the amp is 2 channels, but they're not switchable, 1 is 'bright' and 1 is 'normal'. there are 4 inputs, 2 for 'bright' and 2 for 'normal',1 is high sensitivity and 1 is low sensitivity, for each channel? u can then blend these 2 channels together to create a better sound, in my opinion. i find the bright channel is a little too bright by itself, and the normal is quite woolly by itself, but together, they sound awesome, so thats what that white lead does, blends the 2 channels together
simonbeckwith 2 years ago
nice one buddy, ill have to check that!!
simonbeckwith 2 years ago
why didn't you get a 1960a or 1960av cab? thoise MG cabs suck tone! if anything upgrade those nasty speakers to some vintage 30's or some greenbacks.
joshuarugg 2 years ago
that cab isn't actually mine, its my house mates. i have a jcm 900 cab that is far better
simonbeckwith 2 years ago
EBAY!!!!
simonbeckwith 2 years ago
ive had 2 off there, i use the marshall pb100 (i think thats what its called) powerbrake. its really good and wont harm your amp. the best one for marshall amps. i think i paid about £130 both times
simonbeckwith 2 years ago
hello ... you can tell me where can I find a dampener as your volume? I too have a marshall 1987x + dod 250 preamp .... but I need an attenuation because I put the marshall at the most ... THANKS
mattiahardrock 2 years ago
I just read below and you pretty much answered my question. If you ever want an unbelievable attenuator, google "Ho's attenuator" They are the best.
songnow 3 years ago
yeh, the power tap goes thru the fx loop, and tbh, is a bit crap, i now have the marshall power brake and it works really well :)
simonbeckwith 3 years ago
Yeah Power Attenuators don't damage the amp (not a well built one) But those power taps, I am not too sure about..Does it go through the effects loop?
songnow 3 years ago
i know this is a dumb question put does that power tap act as an attenuater or as an external master volume. because power attenuaters can damage the amp and i need something to significantly cut the volume. thanks
standupforeal 3 years ago
power attenuators do not damage the amp. that is a myth.
RickyboyH 3 years ago
A proper power attenuator will NOT damage an amp any more than just playing really freaking loud. As long as a suitable impedence matched load is connected to the amp, it doesn't care if it's pushing speakers or a dummy load.
boogieman00001 2 years ago
the power tap is basically a volume control that runs through the fx loop. tob honest it also sucks gain aswell, im not overly keen on it, hence whyi bought a proper marshall power brake, and the amp sounds a million times better :)
simonbeckwith 3 years ago
LUCKY MOTHER FUCKER lol i love itXD

simonbeckwith 3 years ago
might be a retarded question...but.......is this any good for metal tones?? i love rock blues but...also play a few heavier songs with my band so...just wondering if it does.. killswitch engages cover of holy diver etc....ive got a ibanez ts9dx and a jackson dkgmt with emg 85 in bridge and 81 in neck for that song and one or two others we do..otherwise its les paul all the time...im a BIG fan of kossoff..so thats how i like to play most of the time
bakinblack 3 years ago
ive got an mxr custom shop gt od pedal, which is basically the same as a tubescreamer, and you can get some pretty heavy sounds using it as a gain boost, and the amp has loads of bite, so helps stuff cut through nicely. i think this amp with a pedal in front of it would be fine, especially if it's only a couple of songs. You should try the mxr zakk wylde pedal, ive heard good things about them too although ive not tried one myself yet....soon hopefully!!
simonbeckwith 3 years ago
it was a crappy 4x10, now got a jcm900 2x12 cab. i dont think the sound is fizzy at all, any amp from jcm800 to present day by marshall is fizzy, this is jus crunch!!
simonbeckwith 3 years ago
Not bad but a little fizzy and harsh to my ears, what kind of cab are you running this through?
Al112987 3 years ago
Nothing wrong with this tone.A reissue of a Rock-N-Roll Icon.Awesome.Love every bit of it.
viperBSG 3 years ago
yeeeeeh boy!! you know it :)
cheers matey
simonbeckwith 3 years ago
it is quite bright i agree, but if its too bassy it dont get heard live, the brightness helps it stand out in the mix
simonbeckwith 3 years ago
a litle bit trebely for me, and more acid than the original
leejackson13666 3 years ago
have you ever played a 2266 vintage modern by marshall....?...is the vm sound like yours?
thanks
titok49 3 years ago
if u wanna hear a good demo of the VM, click the top link on the right of the 87x by 'proguitarshopdemos' and then the same ppl do a VM demo too, prob the best one ive seen. ive not played one myself.
check out my other video of this amp, got myself a better cab and better power brake, sounds much better, plus im demo-ing a few od/boost pedals, as this is how the amp seems to work best.
hope that helps?
cheers,
simon
simonbeckwith 3 years ago
No, no, no. I try the vintage modern head... very bad for me. if you are looking for the true vintage sound of 70' marshall head you can only opt for1987x (50 w) or 1959 super lead (100 w). Unfortunately it has only a channel, but there are thousand ways to pass from clean to distorted equally
madmack1981 3 years ago
Nice demo! Good tone you're getting there bro. Rock on!
jfhudak 3 years ago
cheers matey :)
ive got another video up with the same amp, but a better power brake and cab, plus some od pedals,
enjoy!!
simonbeckwith 3 years ago
thats a very useful demo clip , only thing stopping me from buying one of those heads is the volume issue , i understand the volume control goes from quiet to window breaking very quickly indeed, do you find this to be the case ?
Windbreaker9 3 years ago
um to a certain extent yes, it does go from quiet to ear piercing quite quickly, literally, on 1 is bloody loud!!
BUT!!!
the power brake does sort that out quite a lot, and makes it more 'useable' at home etc.
its a bloody good amp and i wouldnt change it for the world.
wud u be using it with pedals or just the amp overdriven?
simonbeckwith 3 years ago
i use mine, with the power brake, overdiven and with an mxr custom shop od pedal as a gain boost for lead stuff, the amp distortion is really fat sounding, great for rhythm stuff, and the pedal sounds quite thin, but works great for lead stuff helping ya licks cut thru etc
BUY ONE!!
simonbeckwith 3 years ago
USE THD HOT PLATE
jonathanmccoy 2 years ago
im a uni student, if i had the money , id defo look into it
simonbeckwith 2 years ago
Don't get a hotplate, it sucks serious tone. Look at the Ultimate Attenuator.
aligind4h0us3 2 years ago
i think the thd is great, never tried the ultimate. how would you describe the difference? what head are you using... guitar?
SpaztasticVids 2 years ago
Ive managed to get hold of a few pedals and im jsut in the process of editing together some audio and video for a new demo
simonbeckwith 3 years ago
i dont have either of those exact pedals, but i do have an MXR Custom Shop GT OD pedal i could do it with if that helps?
simonbeckwith 3 years ago
could you demo this with an overdrive pedal like a tube screamer or a sd1?
Acidrain1993 3 years ago
thanks :)
the recording wasn't toooo loud, it would compete with a drum kit if that helps.
check back in a week or two, i just got a new cab and a proper power brake by marshall, and it sounds sooooooo much better!!
simonbeckwith 3 years ago
Nice video :)
Nice tone ;)
