  • Thankoyu Remixmanifesto - that i missed a great video like this im happy that you have uploaded it. Linked from techdirt, now spread through out my emailing list. So many great points, so many fail arguments by industry shrills which is an excellent example of cascade failure.

didnt realise part 8 was not the last part *blush*

  • awesome film, never ever pay for music and movies download it for free!

  • whats the song during the end credits right before the colbert remix

  • @tititititiiitititit Videotape, by Radiohead. Some remix.

  • @tititititiiitititit Amplive - Video Tapez (ft. Del The Funky Homosapien)

  • ....or since I'm already in animation, I can take Mickey Mouse and make my own Mickey Mouse films, which I can sell under my own name.....only, in my Mickey Mouse films, Mickey is a serial killer and a rapist. Of course, some might get confused and think it's Disney's Mickey mouse and not my Mickey Mouse they're watching, but what do I care...I'm not Disney.

  • So...when is it not OK to remix? With "up for grabs" laws, I can take the latest Britney Spears song, put a cowbell on it and sell as my own?

  • @TheOpinionater

you could do that but i dont think you'd made any money...

  • @Strawbclock0 I think you missed my point...

  • Now, let's see a film seen from the other side, remix them into one and meet in the middle.

  • Amazing film. Loved it. Nothing is wrong with remixing. Its human nature to share. It's what we are all taught as children to do. If I have something and I'm not using it and you need it, go ahead and use it. Music use to never be about money. It's entertainment. Yes credit is due but that where the line ends. As long as you have fans and support, does anything else matter. I was at a show that had MC Chris (Nerdcore Rapper, some very funny stuff), he didn't care if we as his fans downloaded hi

  • Here is my question: Why not just make original content?

  • @texsuperfan what is 'original content'? No work, in any field is ever 'original'. And usually the best things are the least original ones. And I'm glad people are so good at copying each other cause if we couldnt copy we'd still be monkeys... we are dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants. It may help if you stop thinking about people as distinct beings and start thinking of humanity as a whole. We're just cells in this giant organism.

  • This is a fabulous documentary that tells it exactly how it all is!

Isn't creativity part of human nature?

The essence of creativity should be expanded, not nullified!

  • The credits = amazing.

    Wonderful film.

  • Awesome!!! Keep remix alive!!!!!!

  • Amazing Documentary. FREE THE MUSIC for all THE PEOPLE. All the Soundz and All Genres In Every Country. As We Are ONE on this planet given our rights we shall create our own Media. Long Live The Remix. Peace To Every Man, Women And Child

  • LOLOLOL that black kid is enjoying those push ups way too much!!

  • Bravo. One of the best documentaries I've ever seen and definitely very relevant. Oh and Girl Talk rulez

  • the ending of this doc is grand!!!

i'd like to add something here...

there's a building in washington (the city) which is dedicated to science. (academy of science) It resembles the greek parthenon (acropolis). Around it ,on the top of the building, there's a quote of Aristotle written in greek letters which says in a few words, that it doesn't matter how far you take the human knowledge, as long as you put your piece of knowledge in it.

  • The last remix is FREAKING AWESOME!!

  • world is so beautiful, but some people are working damn hard to F it up.

  • Thank you

  • DOPE ASS DOCUMENTARY REMIX!!!

  • I just put the link to these video's on Twitter and asked people to retweet it!!!! :)

StoryAboutLori Hey you! Give evolution a chance: retweet this great pro-sharing documentary! -- RIP: A Remix Manifesto (part 1)

  • This documentary is really inspirational. :) There really needs to be more people watching this.

Thanks a lot for the upload!~

  • The ending credits song happens to me one of my favorite mixes. Amplive - Video Tapez

  • lol.....The last two minutes is the best part of the film!

    remix it re-re-remix it!

  • Just brilliant... I love the end where he remixes that interview!!

Does anyone know if that guy has ever filed a lawsuit against the director?

And, RemixManifesto, thanks for uploading this!!!

  • does anyone know the name of the song at around 4:20?

  • How Can I Find this video on th eding of the fiilm???

    Tenx :))

  • thx 4 the upload ;)

  • they should determine these copyright infringements by presenting the offending material to a room full of 100s people and see how many even give a shit.

  • i really need to think about moving to brasil..the visual contract between rio and nyc hit me so hard...

  • ...And this my friends is one of the many things that makes america suck!

  • I don't think it should be illegal to download/remix/build upon the ideas of others in any area, be it music or medicine. I also don't think anyone should pay for the use of another persons ideas, though they should acknowledge it. It all comes down to money in the end, and really that should be secondary. If you're an artist, your primary objective is to put yourself out there using music - share your thoughts and emotions. People redistributing and remixing helps you do that. It's greed & idgi

  • ....I have a t-shirt with the same whale as the guy at 2:58 has on his!

  • Pity that the documentary is inaccurate. Some ideas are really good, but mistakes bring confusion in people's mind.

There is no trademark violation if you take a picture like at 1:13. You do a trademark violation if you use the Coca-Cola brand for your own low quality beverage and make money with the well-known brand name.

  • Fuck the RIAA. I make music similar to what Gillis does and please believe from the perspective of an artist who makes mashups, the binding copyright laws are bullshit. All about money that they didn't earn. The music industry has lost it's purpose, and has caused me to lose faith in it. With that mentality, I really don't care about the laws the RIAA sets up to stop remixing from happening. If there is unconstitutional law, then you aren't obliged to follow that law. Enough said.

  • Remix This

  • Sorry but 'Girl Talk' is not a musician no matter how much the film maker wants him to be. Until he creates something that has no recognizable reference to a known song (with all its cultural, historic and aesthetic connotations), he is essentially a broadcaster and when he makes a CD, he is a record label.

  • he is creating music and something new using what has come before him, why does he have to be stopped by some person who doesn't even look at music as money not art. So Girl talk creates something that can be recognized upon hearing but some people believe he is a criminal, that's what the film maker is trying to prove.

  • Under copyright law he has the right to play live just like any DJ.

What he doesn't have the right to do is distribute and make money from other people's recordings.

I don't really have a problem with him reassembling other people's music for fun but I do think its hypocritical of him to accept money for it when he refuses to pay the artists and producers who provide him with material.

  • yeah i mean if he likes doing this he can do it for free. He can keep his job as biomedical engineer and make money of that so you maybe right on that idea. He has put his music online for free so maybe he doesn't want his music to make money just people to listen to it. But I think he should not be sued on the basis that you cannot create because some greedy people don't get their fair share of music that they "own".

  • I think he is doing it at the time he is giving you the oppoetunitie to do your on work with out paying to him neither.

  • @Hufflewaffle but those aint fair prices

  • @gragor11 twat

  • @Hufflewaffle i kind of agree that it takes away from real musicians that spend years mastering their instrument to call dude a real musician, he's slight step above a DJ, that's about it, but whatever you said makes 0 sense, how is he a record label? do you not know what a record label is?

  • awesome film. don't let them take away our power to create.

I wonder what the copyright ppl think of youtube.

  • i watched this on SBS (an Australia tv station for all you non-aussies) and it is awesome

  • "I believe girl talk ........ explores new emotional boundaries."

    (quoted for entertainment value)

  • Watch Brazil in 2016 because they have the Olympics that year,

The International Olympic Committee is really strict on who gets to broadcast the material for the Olympics they were really strict on who was allowed to upload their material even if it was under fair use.

Brazil will really hit back at the IOC to allow people to make remixes with the sporting footage, keep an eye out for that, We may see a new milestone with Brazil

  • Yeah, the biggest problem with this argument is the american dream, and the hope that people can rise above the average and become super rich through the merit of their own hard work.

As good a case as this movie makes for Girltalk et al. (and it makes a very good case) the people who are getting screwed are the musicians, and as an (amateur) musician, I wouldn't mind one bit if someone else played a song I wrote, but I would mind if they made money off of my performance.

  • Maybe that is hypocritical, but it really is how I feel. That's not exactly what copyright laws are at the moment, but it is certainly what the guy from Metallica is saying, and I feel like he has a fair point.

  • Does anyone know what interview is remixed at the end of the video.

Does anyone have a link to a youtube of the original or anything.

Thats one hell of a sample...

  • I'm guest on a radio show about copyright in an hour and I'm gonna quote this movie.

    Perfect work!

    Keep spreading the word!

  • What song is that playing at the beginning of this part?

  • Well the difference between this girl talk guy and any actual band is that girl talk steals and a band borrow for inspiration. Many artists cover songs because they want to add their own touch to it, their own feeling, tell their part of the story. Girl talk on the other hand just takes other peoples feeling and emotions and completely destroys them by cutting them up and altering them. that isnt art, it is straight up plagarism.

  • Inspiration is intangible though and hence can't be measured, to what extent can anyone prove that a band prove their level of 'inspiration' and completely rid a claim of supposed plagirism?

I believe girl talk is re-contextualizing the samples he uses, in a massive pastiche of genres and musical visions he explores new emotional boundaries. How can a listener of the original song know exactly what the song is about anyway, and hence the true emotions in the song??

  • That Was Amazing, Great Movie

  • This was great !!

    Thanx !!!

  • thankyou!

  • tnx for this awesome upload!!!

    long live creative commons

  • I support this 100%

We need a change and this is the best time for it.

  • I saw it completely... excellent documentary!

  • Just watched the full thing. Very insightful. I'm an artist, and have become increasingly more subversive in my artwork. I firmly support artists like Shepard Fairey and musicians like Girl Talk, and find coporate rationing of media appalling. Collaboration is the future of creativity. Very well made film. I'm very sure this has opened minds...

  • Great ending

  • This was very entertaining, enlightening & informative!

  • You're coming dangerously close to stumbling on to some secret knowledge

  • OMG haha Fkin insane :D ,,,,,, fkin gelous Y_Y

  • I Love this film, it's totally genius, and it's great the way it looks to the future in a more optimistic and progressive way. I used to hate remixes, thinking they weren't original at all. Well, this movie made me change my mind! ^^

Anyone knows the name of the song by Girl Talk when they go out to the street?

Btw, The ending with the interview remix is awesome. lol

  • colbert knows whatsup. hes super sarcastic in his statements

  • nice

now i´ll soon subtitle it in español

  • Excelente... buenísima idea!!

  • This video cannot be congratulated with words, only with the steps we take to continue this movement

  • HelloI am of Brazil, I liked documentary it very, mainly in the part that producer quotation that Brazil is an example to be followed in terms cooperation and the right to divide knowledge and ideas that can be beneficial for all society. by the way, "NOBODY CREATES NOTHING OF THE NEW AND YES OF WHAT IT WAS LEFT IN THE PASSED."

  • colbert is the man

    nice film just finished it

    very well done

  • 5:45

the fake disneyland is in china, or japan?

because the picture contains japanese characters! and the scene of the reporter, he was talking japanese! ...And i thought the translaters here did a mistake, but the original vid says "chinese disneyland" too...

  • It might have been a Japanese report on the 'Chinese Disneyland', I noticed that they got the story from Fuji TV, a Japanese company.

  • "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression;

this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference

and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through

any media and regardless of frontiers."

Article 19 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights

  • Hahaha the ending is great with bob 6:24

  • Wow, I always disliked copyright law but this video really gave me a different perspective of it. What really upsets me the most is that some asshole somewhere may have a patent on the cure for cancer but we're not allowed to have it because the copyright owner says so. Meanwhile, people die. There is no such thing as pure originality and there never was. Everything is the eventuality of something else. Copyright law = thought control = life control = death.

  • Amen, well spoke

  • Don't confuse, patent is not equal to copyright

Besides, the point to make here is that a debate is also necessary regarding patent law.

The idea behind copyright and patents is not fundamentally bad. But flaws in the Law and abusive use of it by big corporations screw the original intention. Time for thinking and change. Not revolution.

  • There are certainly flaws and abuses, and there is a subjective line which must always be evaluated. HOWEVER, this documentary is so irrational that it will hurt the cause in the mind of thoughtful viewers. It succeeds in being polemic, but engages in argumental fallacies at every turn, and absolutely asinine cheap tricks (the children, HIV etc). This is a COMPLEX ethical question, best dealt with by thoughtful, informed people. One sided-rhetoric with paper-thin arguments have no place.

  • @itcanbecheezcaketime the cure for cancer is electricity

  • Thank you for this documentary, dude. It was really eye-opening.

  • :-))))))) free

  • it doesnt really affect me if you donate because i didnt make this film.. i just decided to put it on youtube..

but im thinking that maybe you misunderstood the whole point of this movie...

the director isnt saying that no on should make profit.. but rather that the copyright system today is broken.. and that it limits an artists creativity..

if you like the film.. donate.. or download it and pay what you want for it..

if you don't like it.. then don't..

    as simply as that..

    :)

  • @westeightyone

nah the idea here is that money goes to the compagny owning the copyright instaid of the artist.... so basicaly sending the money directly to the artist should be what we would do but laws dont work that way

  • YES!

  • Very interesting! I've never really looked at copyright in the view that what you create from it may be nothing like the original, and so in its own right is 'original' also.

Thank you RIP from sharing your views and hopefully changing the views of others on this subject!

  • Good arguments and focused execution.

Great art incites thought and drives conversations. I wonder when that will be legalized again.

  • Well done RIP...Freedom to the people who are forced to employ evil bureaucrats to protect their oligarch friends. Raising the medical patents was good as companies like pfizer are killers who let millions of people die to increase their profit margins! There needs to be a revolution and you guys are playing a part in that...Appreciated!
