The part about a fault line opening up in the central region to reform a seaway that was call Western Interior Seaway and submerge most of the central region, it's not science fiction. This is called Continental Rifting. This is the same thing that is happening in eastern Africa. They say, if it splits apart, it will form a new ocean and submerge the entire northeast and eastern region. Let's hope this doesn't ever happen to Iowa or most of the central region!

@JAL4110 The mantle is neither active nor hot enough for this sort of thing to happen so suddenly. Even in the most active spreading centers, the plates spread a few centimeters a year. As a result, such a thing would take multiple epochs to truly take shape.
