  • i met Justin a few years ago, and as it happened, my precious cat SammyJ had just died that same afternoon. I mentioned it to him, adding that I had just adopted a young kitten, and he expressed heartfelt sympathy, adding "my cats rule my life as well". I again had the chance to meet and chat with him in a pub in NYC a couple years after that, and the first thing he asked me (after HE walked up to ME and extended a handshake!) was "how's those cats of yours?"

  • The funny thing is Justin Sullivan has made a living doing what he has wanted to do since he was a teenager, with bonafide hits outside of the musical whore house that is the US charts, with his bad teeth and the people that mock him on this board will go to their everyday job, never knowing what it means to touch and inspire a million people on this planet.

I am an American and I was hooked on NMA when I heard the Hunt a lifetime ago.

  • @GhostManBrandonDDpre I first heard The Hunt after two of my friends' bikes got stolen one night. A high school teacher that I'd kept in touch with told me to check out that song. I've been a fan ever since.

  • @Waver80 ...his teeth are freaking heinous!! I think whoever told him that was correct. Sad, but that is the way it works if you are looking to be "popular" among the same masses who like U2 and Britney Spears.

  • Still an anthem for those left scrabbling on the margins...

  • teeth had nothing to do with failure in america- as with the Jam, Nma were just a little too smart - and perhaps alittle too british for americans! I love both bands equally along with the clash - but not many know who Weller or Sullivan is here but both bands have small rabid cult followings and thats more important than widespread popularity anyday- and those who know will never forget thier greatness

  • @Waver80

Some of us didn't miss out on NMA. Some of us think guys like Sullivan and Shane MacGowan are brilliant, no matter what their teeth look like. The irony is that by painting with such broad strokes, your statement is as shallow as you accuse Americans of being. Well done. ;-)

  • thank you for putting my youth inbo a video

    *bows with grace*

...and contact me via twitter @left_the_stars

  • @Waver80 Interesting point but sticks and stalks for teeth didn't stop all four members of The Clash breaking America. ;-)

  • using my daughters youtube account to comment.....38 years old, nothing changes here very much.... Love these guys. Have been a part of my life since too long to remember.... Fecking life at its most raw! -Anjypanj, Glasgow x

  • Traveling up the north of scotland looking out the window listning to this. with a tear in my eye .....

  • One of my favourites, but with a band like New Model Army you have many.

    Great band.

  • I love New Model Army, seen them 50 odd times, the first time in 1984 in London, the last time in 2007 in Vancouver. But seriously, why would you not get a broken tooth fixed?

  • this song is as old as me :D

  • what a great song, its just so true and what can be said reminds me of living in west wales being young and just as in the song it happened to so many friends and in the end me, still makes me sad , nma just the greatest band ever.................

  • Lovely song this. The b side's even better, something to do with mills closing down and desolation of a once proud NW town.

  • @ noseeye

How can you be put off by a name that is responsible for the first republic in the history of humanity?

(Sorry, just studying the importance of the NMA in the final overthrow of Ch I at the mo)

Anyway, check out the first 3 albums, esp Vengeance and No rest, they p*ss on this.

    Best of luck

  • never heard this band before, got put off by the name to be honest, what a fucking good song.

  • 'The Family' are fucking cunts who kick anyone they don't like in.l

  • @thaddeuslowe the "family" are some of the best most honorable people I am friends with, and proud to be part of the east coast family.

  • @thaddeuslowe the family are the latest generation of "the following." in the early/mid 80's it was the mlitia who had a bad reputation amongst NMA fans. Hence the bootleg album "this is for the following, not the militia"

    get your facts straight..... :)

  • My favorite song was "Vengeance" OH YES!

    This song is beautiful. <3

  • grandisimo tema de los NEW MODEL ARMY ,sin desperdicio!!!!!!

  • Amazing still

  • Such a beautiful and poignant song. First time I've heard it in a long time (was bored and typed New Model Army into search..) but it brings back a lot of memories, listening to this on bus rides backwards and forwards on my cheap personal stereo. It really gets what it's like to come from a small town and either stay or move away. You can't win either way, people change and the people who come back aren't the one's who left. I'd give this five stars, but apparently you can't do that anymore..

  • NMA is one of my favorite bands!

  • Aye , great song, but only so many brave enough to go, no it was braver to go, and deep down you know it xx

    Peace x

  • FUCKING GREAT SONG!!!!!!! Going to see N.M.A. tuesday nigth at Falmouth cant wait?

  • Got a lifelong friend that left Wakefield for London and an accountant girlfriend, a year ago. This great song gradually became also poignant. Thanks

  • a truly fantastic song ................

  • I suggest you watch the movie from Homeless to Harvard and if thats all you got left for your royalty well. When blood traitors call you family the enemies just get closer inside you. Raping your bloodline, bleeding you dry, enslaving you....

  • It was family that stole my Rite & you can only forgive so many times. When they still come to kill the Heir. So few realize what they never knew to begin with I guess.

  • Yeah one of my favorites takes me back to before about 1974. I guess he never knew we didn't walk away. Apparently, he never heard the Alarm's song spirit of 1776..lol

  • one of the best of them...

  • One of the best NMA songs ever!!! Takes me back to the late 80's and early 90's when i saw them live - brilliant...

  • Beautiful song !! Great band ! i saw them 3 times in concert ! They rock !

  • jajaja and his teeth??????????

  • They ran away because his mouth was Haunted

  • Tool.

  • what happened to his teeth :) maan i like this band....

5 stars

  • Endlich jemand, der meine Meinung teilt ;-)

  • must have been on about Cornwall here! .... definitely green and grey! :-) f king good band though

  • he was on about the bus journey from bradford to walkley's clog mill in hebden bridge.

  • mattrrv8 i used to live around that area when i was young :-)

  • The best band ever...

    RIP R.H.

  • I grew up on New Model Army and I love this song . Anyone who lived in Retford, Notts and were into this band and Fields of the Nephilm and Sistersof Mercy in 1987, message me !!

  • Loved the porterhouse !!!

  • Sorry for the late reply !!! Loved the porterhouse too !! No pretensions up there lol

  • Great band, better than U2 by far, SG, Dublin

  • 2 different styles of music, both bands are exceptional

  • Une de mes chansons préférée de NMA

Grand groupe et Merci pour cette carte postale envoyée d'Irlande il y a bien longtemps à une de vos big big fan !!

  • STILL THE GREATEST SONG EVER

  • Great drum composition thats Rob!!!

  • Holy shiznit this is great. Why didn't NMA make more songs like this?

  • Just listen to therest of their songs man! They're all great!!!!

  • And tommorow ...

  • great band

  • I love this song.

I grew up in a small, rural market town in Northumberland. I commuted 35 miles to the city for work for 14 years & this reminds me of the winding bus journey through remote countryside in the rain.

Eventually, even I had to move to the city :\

  • just perfect

  • Great music, great lyrics, great song... requiescat in pace, Rob Heaton :-(

  • This song is so great. Hopefully any radiostation or whoever will understand it. Play it allover again.

  • An old favorite, from way back when.

This band always stirs up emotions and their lyrics were always awesome.

"The Ghost of Cain" is one of the best rock albums ever.

  • Knew these guys back in the late 80s (around the time of this and the previous album). Great bunch of guys, none more so than Moose and Rob. After many years out of the loop, I was very sad to hear that Rob died.

  • You suck cause you can`t get the depth of this song. I`m sorry for you.

  • Comment removed

  • the greatest song of all time by my fave band of all time - Rob we miss you - love and peace xXx

  • What a great song. "The gardeners of Eden" played the song in 1994 in a club in Newcastle. Thank you.

  • Just out of interest, do you know which club?

  • at The Riverside (upstairs venue)

  • "what price glory" so the saying goes. Fuck, this is a fantastic band, with really weighty lyrics, who gives a fuck if the guy has a gap between his teeth. These guys are the real deal...how many bands these days bring so much out of YOU when you listen?

  • Ich liebe NMA

    Wunderschöner Song

  • Stimmt =)

  • WHY DID STUART MORROW LEAVE NMA?

  • Comment removed

  • one of my favorite tunes when i was a young teen, didint even speak English at the time, great to hear it again after ...20 years? Like the lyrics too.

  • yeah, you are right. That really influence quality of singning.

  • Well I suppose that would be true if he was singing. "Every Rose Has a Thorne" and was in a crappy 80s hair band.

  • for some reason this song makes me want to quit my job, my profession, and leave my shitty town

  • @guitarlawyer75 you and me both. fancy a commune in mid wales united kidgdom? :) thats where i am heading :)

  • @guitarlawyer75 please excuse typo! there is cake in my keyboard!

  • Want this at my funeral. One of my favourite songs and say's a lot about me

  • Wow, My teacher told me to listen to this.

    He has really great taste:D

  • Beautiful <3

  • This song brings tears to my eyes

  • You and me both.

  • R.I.P. ROB HEATON-This song is genius!!!

  • made me pack in my cushy job in the council 1992

  • one of the best songs ever. great yeah

  • lots of memories about leeds....they are always great!!!

  • trip down memory lane :'(...., it's a wonderful song

  • magic!!!

  • An absolute classic

  • yes,yes,yes....great

  • one true great song that'll never get old

  • timeless classic. Who'd have thought that 20 years later they'd still be known. I was a young teenager back then. Shows what my dad knows! 'who'll be listening to them in 20 years time!' HA! lol ;)

  • This yank loves them!

  • My No.1-NMA-Song! Great! :-D

the whole "thunder and consolation"-album rules! :-D

  • yep, maybe their best album

  • fuchinrights!

  • Oh yeah and one of the best songs EVER!!!!!!

  • He has a hot missing tooth

  • ja NMA sind ein zu wenig beachtetes Kleinod

  • brilliant. shame the yanks dont like them.

  • ganz bestimmt !!! my Friend :)

  • There´s no other songwriting band showing such passion for bringing up feelings someone might miss. Everyone who knows their songs is being connected with some emotions once experienced, the origin doesn´t matter.

  • Being commited to praise: Awesome song, awesome band, agreeing that they never received the tribute they deserved.

  • One of the best of their songs-guitar by Rob. RIP Brother Traveller

  • love this song and the band are one of my fav band been into them from the first time i seen them on the tube. one of the under rated bands rock on n.m.a.

  • Agree....... This band needs the recognition they deserve and Justin needs to be recognized as the exceptional songwriter he is..... Perfection

  • NMA is the most criminally underrated band of the past few decades. Thunder and Consolation deserves to be a helluva lot more celebrated than it is now, particularly in America.

  • This is the song I listened to on my way to work in a UN hospital in Croatia in 92' Still makes me think of my wife and brings me to tears to this day.-an American

  • in Croatia in 92' there was a war,you should't go so far away from your home, that was not your bussines

  • ...and let the ethnic cleansing continue? Was that what you wanted?

  • wtf? what was my comment?

  • @dragannov I WORKED IN A HOSPITAL! I took care of Serbs and Croats alike! I couldn't agree with you more on the conflict not being my business. However, rendering aid to the injured is my job. There were time that we took care of people in the evening that had been shooting at us in the morning. It didn't matter. And why did you name yourself after a Soviet made sniper rifle?

  • Yes it sure is

Well i got another one The Raveonettes

  • hehe i mean they are criminally underrated

  • Such a good song, not such a good video. I am a big new model army fan

  • Thunder & Consolation was their 4th "proper" album if you count Vengeance (which you absolutely must). NMA are the most enduring and relevent band from the last 30 years, despite many changes of personnel. NMA rule, pure and simple. Robert Heaton, RIP and thanks

  • Love New Model Army !!!!!!!

  • LOL lOL LOL LOL LOL

    increible!!!!!new model army sois grandioso!!^^

  • This belongs in the YouTube Video Thread plumb dumb.

  • awesome nma-song, one of my faves! that's some bad hair though ...

  • totally agreed. Especially to the haircrime

  • if you dont´t like it then watch another one and shut the fuck up!!

  • I think it's time to dust the clogs off and stand on someone's shoulders!

    Long live Justin!

  • LOL, true. But their look is somewhat subdued when you compare it to other bands that were popular in the late 80s. I used to have this CD in like 1990 (maybe it was a compilation - white cover with red symbol on it). but my brother borrowed it and his truck was broken into the next day, and I never saw it again :-(.

  • that CD was the "thunder and Consolation " album, also the first of them that i had, but in fact the third popular album of nma, released in 1987 and in the opinion of the most nma-fans one of the best they´d ever done. Old lineup, Robert Heaton is dead. Now Justin Sullivan is the only "Compadre" who was member of NMA when they became a band.

  • The most beautiful song ever created.

  • Still think the attack is one of the most under rated song of all time. Simple yet brilliant and a joy to play. One of the first army songs I learnt (after 51st state but then who doesn't play that once in a while)

  • still sends shivers down my spine even after all these years. one of the greatest songs ever composed.

  • "No Greater Love" is one of my fave NMA songs!Nobody seems to have posted it on you tube!

  • another young brave steals away

  • I was traveling in Europe when I learned of this band. I went to the "Bizzare" festival to see Living Colour. Next after was New Model Army who I'd never heard of. I was leaving and I asked "Is this next band any good?" An army guy said "They're AWSOME!" So I stayed.

I have no Living Colour music anymore but I won't give up my New Model Army tapes for anything!

I live in the USA now.

  • A BONA FIDE CLASSIC ROCK SONG!Criminally underrated!Sad really!

  • fucking good tune this is a good band and i still like there tunes

  • nma still number one for me! love them!

  • Such a bloody good honest band, if you heard this song each morning you would have a rewarding day!

  • "You think you 're so brave just to go running". That was so smart and cool.

  • "The time I think most clearly, the time I drift away.............."

This gives me goose bumps every time I hear it.

Definitely in my top ten, nay top five.

Thanks for putting it up for the world to see.

    Fantastic

  • Is it true that the world has always got to be something that seems to happen somewhere else?

  • No, become a "renegade of funk": Google that ;)

  • God! I didn´t know how great was New Model Army sound! Fantastic!!!!! =)

  • this song is so underated...it makes so much sense on life today.and i dont even have dreads

  • ich hab die noch nie gehört finds aber ärger geil...

  • echt nicht???? Gibts doch schon Aeonen. Und immer geile Platten gemacht und live der Hammer, sogar wenns nur ein Unplugged Gig ist oder grade dann :D

  • One of the best songs written about life in Modern Britain.

  • an absolute classic. nuff said.

  • Also seeing them in Stroud as my mates band is supporting them

  • wahnsinn, die beste band aller Zeiten

  • perfection

  • yes, best song ever written in history of music

  • He got his tooth knocked out by Colin from the band Conflict.

  • Where can we get clogs now? And what happened to the Militia - has Justin killed them all secretly, one by one?

  • You can still get clogs from Walkleys, who made nma's but to be honest the quality went down hill when the old guy retired(was his name nelson as well?)They moved to Elland outside Halifax. Alternatively there Is a guy in Wales called Trefor Owen who makes excellent clogs but beware, I just googled him, went to the first site and got more infections than a judge at a sneezing contest!!

  • brill

i live in the south..this reminds me of my time up north

nma are another great northern bands..down south we have the kooks ..o dear

  • couldnt agree more, I am the same, born in the south and discovering the Army when I lived up north. Best band in the universe imho

  • knoblock. you wouldn't know a decent song if it kicked you in the knackers. pisswilly whitesnake fan.

  • All that time alone in your monkey has obviously affected your taste in music!

  • Who gives a rat's ass what his teeth look like? He's an awesome musician and he has an interesting outlook on life. Have you heard him in interviews? He doesn't give a crap what people think etc.-He realizes that we've become a materialistic/beauty obsessed culture. Listen to this message in this song-Get it?

  • 2 days ago I had the pleasure of meeting Justin Sullivan in Atlanta. He is a truly beautiful person; you are so right, our society is so hung up on beauty. F*cking ridiculous.

  • Too right - but is there much point talking to people like this. Maybe they'll lose a tooth one day and all their mates will turn their backs on them. Sometimes it takes an event to change people.
