  • this is excellent, and an insightful interview, thanks for uploading. Twilight Zone was one of my favourite shows growing up, absolutely loved it and looked forward to it, & Rod Serling a very interesting character & his intros very much part of the show. Twilight Zone shows that the story, unique idea & script are more important than the special effects etc.

  • great interview!!

  • Excellent and priceless. Good luck finishing the documentary.

  • Wow, I think this was an amazing show. Thank you for making it. I love it.

  • Demokitch - thanks for taking the time to tie this video together - I really dug it. I can't believe that someone actually thought it was appropriate to discard the master! This brings to mind a phrase from Steely Dan: "the things they think are useless, I just don't understand." Rod Serling was BRILLIANT - and died way too soon.

  • Somebody has to upload the Night Gallery version of Pickman's Model soon. For the sake of all humanity! Or, more importantly, my viewing pleasure.

  • guy died at 50 amazing

  • great man never without a cig.try do that today on tv

  • All Hail Rod Serling!!!

  • Hey You Tube!!! When watching anything that has Rod Serling name attached too there should never be a Dislike button on. Rod Serling is pure GENIUS! You should be proud that people like Demokitch and others post this great interviews and other material.

  • @Rufskin13 Amen!

  • 6:43 Serling is just jealous that The Twilight Zone will always be second to Star Trek in terms of the best science fiction show ever.

  • @bealio721 Star Trek ain't got shit on the twilight zone. lmao

  • @bealio721 Rod's Twilight Zone was the best TV show ever concieved.

  • @bealio721 Lol I think your the jealous one

  • Thanks for sharing..... it is appreciated.

  • Good Day,

Really appreciated the opportunity to see this!

I have enjoyed reading one of his books as a teen,..watching TZ on tv,..now owning the DVD sets.

I'm not interested in "supersonic special effects"..I'm attracted to his method of the viewer using the special effects in your mind.

It's a good story that is memorable...

I liked that there was a MORAL to each play. THAT has far greater value to me than...anything else amazing.

I was not as crazy about Night Gallery, A little too spooky!

  • Rod Serling speaks with such elegance. It is such a pleasure to listen to him. Thank you for posting this and for working so hard to edit the film.

  • This is fantastic - thanks so much for transcribing this and posting it.

  • This is amazing. Thanks for the effort you put into it. It's definitely worth being seen. Could Rod Serling be more of a badass?

  • Serling showed in 1959 that relevant, quality, memorable TV, is done with talent, not money. Overall, the world television industry has been missing the point ever since. How many early 60's shows are still on the air? Probably only TZ.Rod Serling was a masterful storyteller, a great drama writer and still a role model for creators.

  • i wonder what Serling would think about the tv show V?

  • I also wondered why the terrific Rod Serling never collaborated with Gene Roddenberry on sf TV projects,or contribute scripts to Star Trek. He did collaborate with Irwin Allen though on the TV pilot movie "Time Travelers"from 1976. Its a well done story by Rod(Jackson Gillis:teleplay) & does not suffer from the usual Allen flaws seen on his other sf projects.

  • Thanks for posting this and for the work in reconstructing it. Serling has been a favorite of mine since I was 14. Despite his own self-deprecation, I would place him with other storytelling giants including Edgar Allan Poe. A true television pioneer.

  • Richard Matheson also wrote "I Am Legend" as well as scripts for The Twilight Zone and Night Gallery

  • Thanks so much for this most interesting video of our beloved Rod Serling! Loved it.

  • I'm a Trek fan but I understand his negative opinion of Star Trek. No hard feelings.

  • Hmmm, I do wonder why Rodman didn't collaborate with Gene rodenberry, nor Irwin Allen for that matter on their various TV projects? Most curious! They would have made a powerhouse team to say the least, and had more in common, in say, their battles with network censors and creativity. Man, what a waste! And could you imagine what Serling could have accomplished with Art Wallace, Dan Curtis, and the deliciously scary Brian Clemmons in 70s TV?

  • RIP. Rodman was one of the few(besides Gene Rodenberry)to give maturity, optimism, and adult dignity to the science fiction genre in TV, and perhaps the movies. I personally think(for I haven't read this anywhere else,)that serling's offerings(along with his colleagues Matheson, et al)should be elevated to the writings of O. Henry, Shalom Aleickem,Twain,Wash. Irving, Hurston, walt Mosely, etc.Yes, school kids should be taught these greats before they reach HS. Rod's writings speaks to our angst!

  • Brilliant sci-fi writer.

  • @sirtinycreep he also had a good narration voice as well

  • Man, Serling was an epic man. Smart, funny, and really objective in his critique of the Twilight Zone as well as other Sci-Fi shows of the time. I wish he were still alive.

  • What some viewers might not be aware of is that Mr. Gunn was an accomplished SF writer in his own right. "The Immortal" was based on "The Immortals" which IMHO told a much better story than the film adaptation and the short-lived TV series pursued. It would have been interesting to have seen what Mr. Serling could have done with an adaptation of THAT novel.

  • What brilliant insight, from an absolute genius, on what can be considered one of the greatest shows in television, The Twilight Zone. Thanks you so much for your effort in bringing us this priceless footage!

  • Cool stuff. Been watching twlight zone since the early 70s. it used to rerun at 11pm every night when I was a kid, with a raymond massey ad opening it (or closing it..)..

  • Thanks so much for uploading this!

  • Thanks for your comment.

Reassembling this video did take quite a bit of time, since I dubbed the film to video from the original 16mm workprint, then the audio from the original audio track, a different edit from the film. It had to be pieced together section by section while also matching and realigning the audio. It's not perfect, but maybe a new version will be transfered from the master, which was rescued from the trash and then delivered to the Spencer Research Library on the KU campus.

  • @demokitch Where did you find this footage? was it in the college archives somewhere? did you know Mr. Serling personally?

  • @demokitch This is so fantastic. Twilight Zone just came onto Netflix instant, and I've been going through all of them. I'm 35 and I can't think of another black and white tv show that I still love to watch as much as this one. I also thank you for putting this together. Rod Serling was such a cool guy. His commentary during the show made the story even creepier. I love(d) it.

  • Thanks for the effort you put into this, it's much appreciated. It shows a nice slice of time, a time I fondly remember and badly miss.

I'm one of those minority who utterly hate CGI and what it has done to elevate talentless people. If any creative talent deserved to have had CGI in his time, it was Serling.

  • @60sThru80s So Jurassic Park, Terminator and Toy Story are bad because of CGI?

  • @60sThru80s why badly miss it? what's the point of that?

  • @60sThru80s I feel the opposite. I think CGI would have destroyed twilight zone. IMO, the genius of the show is the fact that the majority of the stories are based on timeless themes about human nature, which is likely why it remains a classic to this day, despite some of it's hokey special effects and fashions. CGI has a tendency to distract from the writing and allows writers to get lazy because they rely too much on the visuals. (just my opinion, obviously)

  • @ritter89 wrote "CGI has a tendency to distract from the writing and allows writers to get lazy because they rely too much on the visuals." You're absolutely right, Ritter. Well said!

  • @60sThru80s I agree with you. It's understandable why they use CGI, because it is less time consuming than creating practical effects (and it costs less), but it takes away the realism and overall quality which films and TV series needs most of all.
