The language of older church music can be a little hard to understand sometimes, but in this instance, "fetter" is a good thing that binds you to God and their ways, rather than something that holds you back from good things.
In the same vein, an "ebenezer" literally means "stone of help". You can also think of it more as an altar.
yes amen to this song! you dont have to be a "christian" to sense the peace and gentleness of God on this song and on sufjan stevens! I pray all nonbeleivers can feel God when listening to this.
For those asking about the seeming contradiction between God's love and hell, God does indeed love each and every person in this world. He would that everyone would be enfolded in His love;but there is a barrier- sin. Hell is eternal seperation from God. Sin separates us from God. But God didn't leave us to perish in our sin. In His mercy, He sent Jesus as the Fount of every blessing to save us from our wandering and strife.
This is perhaps my favorite hymn, lyrically as well as the simply beautiful melody. Sufjan makes everything about my relationship with God so...yummy.
Good Lord. I've never heard of Sufjan Stevens and had never heard this song in my life but last night I heard it at the end of an episode of Friday Night Lights and so I got online and found it first thing this morning. This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I'm at work & had to shut my office door because I was crying. Absolutely amazing. How can I not have ever heard of this wonderful artist before? Really....one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard in my life.
@bluemoon1442 ugh...me too, and then you get hit with: "...prone to wander Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love, here's my heart take and seal it." Whoa.
Psalm 43:3; "Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me... to the place where you dwell." John 1:1-4; "...the word was God... In him was life, and that life was the light of men." Psalm 36:9; "with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light." Psalm 46...:4; "There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God," Psalm 36:8b; "you give them drink from your river of delights." Revelation 17:15b; "The waters you saw... are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages"
I'm depressed that Youtube deleted the "good" version of this one by Sufjan. :( Of course, this is the base version of the good one, just without the extra stuff. The other one was much more powerful. So sad...... :(
MegaTiml- "Religion" is not as inspiring as the music because religious persons are imperfect. I encourage you to seek your spiritual solace where you can and understand that no human is perfect.
i cant beilev this song is on the friday night lights sound track, i bouhgt it because i was intrested in the song on there by W.G. Snuffy Walden but i ended up loveing every single song on there including this one!
Jesus loves you who read this. not just us, but you. the individual. flaws and all. if you understand one thing in this life, understand this: you are the one jesus loves.
@TheBloodbought1 I dont want to get into a huge argument about this. I am truly curiouse. Please correct me if anything I say is incorrect Im am not a christian. But it seems mixed messages are sent. Jesus loves us all, yes if we are not christian I am going to get sent to hell? Please explain I am not trying to bash on christianity, or anything I really want to understand the thought behind it all.
@muahahaha101 I think it's less about deserving hell and more about deserving heaven. If we are imperfect people, why do we deserve perfection? The Jesus loves us bit comes from the sacrifice of a perfect being choosing to suffer and die an extremely painful death so we can have this perfection we don't really deserve. This is a very basic explanation after being limited to 500 characters. I apologize if this offends, it's not how everyone sees it. If you want to ask more questions, message me
@muahahaha101 Every bad action deserves to be punished, right? if someone breaks a law, they should go to jail or pay a fine. it's the same way with christianity. when sin, we're breaking God's law and need to be punished. Our punishment for sin is eternal seperation from Christ; hell.but because God loves us so much,he couldn't bear to see us suffer and be seperated from him and sent his perfect son to die on the cross and take our place.Jesus' love saves us from Hell. Our sin sends us to hell.
@littleflock1232 I can see the sense in what you are saying. Still one of the reason I never felt a connection to christianty. That fact that if I dont believe in Jesus I am going to hell. Of couse, not only chiristianity this is true with many religions and i feel the same for all of them. If i dont do anything bad, why should I go ot hell? Because not believeing in Jesus is considered a sin? I dont hurt anyone by not practicing christianity. My own opinion. No offense meant.
@muahahaha101 It's a valid question that sadly turns a lot of otherwise open people away from Christianity. The fact is that many Christians (myself included) do believe that the path to heaven is open to non-Christians and several Christian churches teach this doctrine. There's no universal consensus on the issue within the faith, but plenty of us can see how the words "salvation through Christ" can mean far more than just calling oneself a Christian and going to a Christian church on Sunday.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me
Romans 5: 11-12 And not only [so], but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteos
It would be terrible going through life resting on mans intelligence, thinking that there was no superior being.
Thinking that things just happened, with no ultimate purpose.
Some people who call themselves Christians because they go to church on Sunday are sometimes very narrow minded.
But theres noway that a REAL Christian can be narrow minded with the belief that the God who created the universe would also choose to show us the mercy and love that this song talks about.
@MegaTiml I am a "christian", in that I love God and try to follow Jesus, but I agree. It might sound hypocritical but I dont call myself religious, I just follow Jesus - religions have so much of imperfect human design (traditions, judgement of other groups). I think that if everyone who claimed to be christian actually fully followed what Jesus taught (eg mostly about love) then it would look very different.
you have no idea how much it hurts me when I see "christians" spouting hatred
@nubbs wheres the beauty in atheism? is there any beauty in believing in nothing? If you can't see the beauty in self sacrifice, then you were just not meant to see it...
youre being very closed minded. atheist believe in the wonders of the natural world, which is all we can know. god is an assumption you dont need to make. and i CAN see the beauty in self sacrifice. you don't need a religion based on the failed apocalyptic eschatology of an entirely jewish preacher
if you do have an open mind, watch the "feyman pleasure of finding things out" clip on youtube. then you'll understand the beauty of this world
ps if i wasnt meant to see, thats gods fault not mine
@nubbs It is because this is what REAL Christianity is about! It is about beauty, love, companionship, trust, and truth. I am glad that this song has shown you the true beauty of what it means to love God. God is the creator and he created us with the ability to make beautiful music like this. It is to be recognized and appreciated, bringing meaning to our life.

I love you in Jesus name.Thank you for giving me hope Linda
@MrPokekart Maybe a deeper explanation would be beneficial. We believe that that the spirit of God dwells within us as followers of Christ. Therefore going to a building isn't what makes us a Christian. We are Christians because we have placed all of our faith in the redemptive work of Christ. The times we gather are simply time to learn the bible better and spend time in fellowship with other believers.
@MrPokekart And what @otnemem760 means learning the bible, is learning "God's word." or literally things God had said through people, and what he means by "fellowship" is hanging out
