They are eating my porch rails like they were termites. I don't want to kill them. but I do want them gone. I happen to love my house and need it to live in. lol
Glad to see that someone would rather help them than kill them with harsh chemicals, I love havin' these little guys around, they're cute little fellas, and they always seem interested in what I'm doing if I'm outside, they come right up and check me out. They know I don't hurt em, they float right next to me without any care whatsoever. Of course they tend to want to guard their nests, but we had one in particular who used to come down from the roof to play with our cat when we had her out.
Yes, carpenter bees are valuable pollinators. My experience with this was: I found a carpenter bee queen eating into the molding of my house. I grabbed a plastic bottle with a wide lid and a can of air-- (you know, the kind you clean computers with) and FROM A DISTANCE because the chemical reaction could have froze her, and put in her in a bottle. I then nailed three two by four pieces together and augured a hole in it.
@Paxseko Ideally, I would have rubberbanded the bottle to the house until she got the idea, but the person I left holding the bottle while I went to get the rubberbands freaked out and let her get out. She sat on the house for a few hours, and did seem to be checking it out, until a huge rainstorm came. She was in a very protected area-- under 70 year old Norway Spruces, and the house had a top, but I guess she hadn't figured that out yet... Haven't seen her since. A shame.
@TerrenceA1 I am of the mindset that all wasps, bees and anything else is worth protecting. I have painted to help deter them and this year I hope they will gravitate to it. Just trying to find a balance{{:>)
@mynymn I agree.. I guess my thing about carpenter bees is that whenever they re near they always like to fly towards you as though they want to RAM into you.. Doesn';t that ever bother you??
@jpopkamaria Hi. I am not encouraging them as much as I hope to discourage them from my barn. I will be painting soon hopefully. Mudd daubers filled the holes so the jury is out but I wish I did know how to attract them to it. There are very few bees at all so far this season{{:>(

Do carpenter bees help pollinate the environment just as honey bees do??

How would you 'persuade' a carpenter bee to check that out?
