I've been listening to DT for a while and I never knew they covered any Rush songs. I don't know what to think now. My life would be complete if they covered Cygnus X-1 or Fountain of Lamneth. It's not Geddy's voice but dammit, DT is close. Did they pump out any albums with covers?
Like ever other cover these guys do, yeah, it's great...but it adds NOTHING to the original!
When I want to listen to RUSH, I listen to RUSH! When I want to listen Maiden, I listen to Iron Maiden! These guys should stick to original stuff and stop copying so many other great bands: it's boring!
@thefrijole15 Dream Theater is Dream Theater, they play RUSH because like us they are fans, just because a band covers material, it doesn't mean they wish they were another band or think they're better....you are the perfect retard
I've been a huge Rush fan since i was 12, and I'm quickly realizing now how far their influence spreads in the prog world. Metal or Rock. It's simply amazing what Rush has done in their career. Good cover :)
I can't believe how much the guitar tone and chord voicings of the original are perfectly executed here! It ain't no Barre-chord rock and roll these guys are covering, and Petrucci is just killing it on every level. So awesome. This does more to make me a DT fan than any of their own music.
Very nice version. Love it actually. I like this song a lot anyway and these guys are obviously real fans. Singer's obviously struggling a bit which is a shame, but the band does a top job otherwise!
I love this cover! Not LaBrie's best performance, but can you fucking blame him? Geddy Lee is notorious for flying high above the average male vocal range. LaBrie is an amazing singer regardless, so all y'all haters can kindly stfu.
Well done. I've been in a Rush cover band for several years now, and I can tell you that it's extremely difficult to imitate the original trio!! In fact, I don't think that anyone could ever do it exactly like they do... they have a chemistry that is unlike anything I've ever heard.
This is so bad on so many levels that I don't even know where I would begin. It blows my mind that a band with so much technical ability can suck so often. Here's another bit of advice: Leave other people's songs alone. Fuck up your own.
@stevedrums You obviously have no fucking idea what you're talking about...you sound retarted and should shut the fuck up! NTM you're listening to this and commentng based on someone's cell phone audio!! Go get yourself a clue before you post another retarted comment like that again...
@vanhaver5150 I don't know why I'm responding to someone w/ your lack of maturity, But, I recall when the orignal version of this song was released and I remember seeing the original band on tour perform it, so don't tell me what do and don't know. Listen, the vocals are out of tune, the drums are playing the song way too fast, and guitar player must have mistook playing this song for trying to set speed records at a race track and the bass player isn't even audible. It sucks. period! As do you.
@stevedrums Look...this is Dream Theater performing a Rush song...very few bands on the planet can attempt a Rush song, but if any band can it's Dream Theater...who I might add is paying tribute to their biggest influence and probably the most influential band of all time! What gets me is you have the balls to say this sucks based on cell phone audio...oh and my favorite part was when you said you couldn't hear the base line...that was classic!! I you truly are a moron!
What a disgusting wankarama version of this song. James The Cheese needs to have his fucking teeth kicked down his throat for murdering the vocal, like that.
It also proves that no one can match what Geddy does vocally. Criticize Geddy all you want but i've yet to hear anyone match what he does with his voice.
@cameronscorner1 I agree, whether your a fan of his singing or not, he has excellent talent as a vocalist, not to mention playing bass and/or keyboard at the same time
The singer has absolutely NO stage presence and is a bore to watch. He stands there, sings, plays with his hair and drinks bottled water. Great musicians yes...
musically this is fatastic but labries vocal sound and style dont fit all that well. but hell who am I to complain! ROCK ON DREAM THEATER AND ROCK ON RUSH!!!!
as far as it being "bang on" its far from it...its way to fast....as far as rush covers DT are as good as it gets....and to have played this in rush's home town it was brave as all get out and to have pulled it off as well as they did...BIG TIME KUDOS....im not realy a DT fan but damn if i dont respect them...they are an awesome outfit with top notch musicians
thanks for posting this up, even though some have a need to call you names.
I would have LOVED to have been there for this song, the best Rush song ever, and by my second favorite band. Rush being my fav, if anyone really cares!!!
First vid I've seen of DT live, and I didn't watch it for RUSH, but for Dream Theater. Descent cover they did to honor, or at least show their respect for RUSH, so no complaints here. Only discovered DreamTheater 6 months ago and had heard their name for years... Excellent find I might add. Might just have to put them as my #2 behind RUSH. Will now look for more DT.
hey folk's, if you don't like the video, or the audio, go make one of your own and show us how it's done... or if you don't like the band's performance, then go pick up an instrument, practice it for about 22 years, put together a band, book some gigs, have them filmed, and then the REST of us will sit around, having done nothing of interest in the meantime, and we'll fling poo at your work and say it doesn't meet OUR standards. k? go...
@struvah Think perhaps all 5 guys played on this cover because... gee I dunno.... all 5 wanted to pay homage to Rush? How about just saying "nice cover" and moving on....
To all who are complaining about this cover: Yes, James LeBrie has a less-than-ideal voice. So what? We've known this for... years now? He's not Geddy, but we already knew that. The instrumentation is spot-on, albeit not as energetic as Rush's own performances. Bottom line is, DT has done a reverent and damn accurate cover of a fantastic song by a fantastic band, and I say, all the power to 'em!
SOOOO glad Dream Theater does all these covers so everybody can appreciate just how much better the original artists are. Kevin the Cheese is the worst fucking singer I have ever heard. Portnoy the Destroyer must have got tired of having his eardrums assaulted by that caterwauling, so he finally quit this band of wankers.
@alabamapianoman No one but Geddy can sing like Geddy. His vocal ability is one of a kind, you have to respect anyone who dares to try and replicate it.
I have seen Rush almost 50 times. What I don't wish to see are peoples comments that are insulting towards a great band like DT doing a terrific tribute to their huge inspiration a band called Rush. Great job DT. As my Mom always said if you can't say something nice then shut up................
@alabamapianoman Yeah that must be why DT has the following that they do huh? If you don't like em and yet you come here to watch them play, I'd say your either a troll or a dumbass. Take your pick...
WOW!!! damn good job...everything except the vocals were spot on...he still has a great voice...if i were drunk & blindd-folded...he might have fooled me.
Great instrumentally but this singer sounds totally weird to me.
Not because he doesn't sound like Geddy,... it's just that he sounds strange, like he's from a Star Trek episode and has this speech affect that comes from living on another planet.
John does a fine job with this solo, however nobody touches the Godliness of Alex Lifeson. Nobody. Alex is beyond comparison and no other musician can touch him.
Another great cover by DT! But I'm afraid that if the Tea Party comes to power they'll prohibit American bands from playing foreign songs. Vote progessive! So to speak.
@ACELLOFAWARENESS i dont think canadas greatest export is gonna have a single problem according to the vids i already seen from the time machine tour. god i may be seeing iron maiden/dream theater in 2 days but my lord im so pumped for rush playing september 16th in pittsburgh. i cant wait to see how they are in the new arena
@caressxofxsteel heck yeah bro!!! did you see MY vid from KC of Camera Eye solo!?!?! i'm going to 4 or 5 shows next week and at least 7 more later in the year!
Wow. Just Wow. warming up for the new Rush Tour knowing that they'll play The Camera Eye I ran into this video. Awesome. This is not an easy song to play. Very cool and very talented Dream Theater. I'm gonna have to look them up.
even though i consider DT an amazing band (at least untill metropolis prt 2), there are several mistakes in this cover..... Mike portnoy makes a have compass late brack on the beginning, and he catches up wile playing, second, the awfull out of tone of James LaBrie in his entrance ( . . . manhattan), and mostly the entire song . . . an offense considering than he is canadian
There's a difference between butchering a song and putting your own spin and style to it. His first line was sloppy, I'll give you that. But I think he was great for the rest of the song.

much respect to dream theater for covering this song. I gotta give it up. all you who are dissing shut the fuck up cause you sound really stupid, Rush are the most humble band in rock and DT do this out of love and respect for them I'm sure..
@emeaney42 BUll-fucking shit. DT does shit like this, because:
1. They don't have enough good songs of their own to get through a concert without people falling asleep or heading for the bathrooms.
2. They have a permanent chip on their shoulder (especially that megalomaniacal midget, Portnoy) that they will never be as famous or respected as their "heroes", so they set to "prove" that they can outdo bands like Rush.
3. Kevin The Cheese is the worst fucking singer in the history of rock.
@emeaney42 Nice that they do it out of love, but they butchered the hell out of it. Horrible! Can't they ruin their own music without having to ruin others classics?
@metalhead1800 fuck no, neil peart was the reason that mike portnoy wanted to be a drummer in the first place, sure yea he might be a better drummer than neil NOW cause he's aging but back in his ages.....oooohhh man killer drum solos fucking peart would play!!!
Interesting cover...Rush never does this song live, so that somehow spoiled it...his voice kills it...also, the Moving Pictures cover with Dream Theater on it? Kinda lame if you ask me. ;~; Good try at a Rush cover, guys.
@KingTabor They played it once or twice, but TCE remains one of the most elusive and most requested live songs to this day. It's a Rush fan thing. We don't consider ourselves "fans" until we want TCE live. :P Just kidding, of course.
It is one of my faves too, the chordal work by Alex is amazing and delightful. Here in tube there´s onde video by user MasterTracks18 with just the guitar track
I've been listening to DT for a while and I never knew they covered any Rush songs. I don't know what to think now. My life would be complete if they covered Cygnus X-1 or Fountain of Lamneth. It's not Geddy's voice but dammit, DT is close. Did they pump out any albums with covers?

@alabamapianoman

Keep listening to Abba, BTW, men stuff.

@emeaney42 Nice that they do it out of love, but they butchered the hell out of it. Horrible! Can't they ruin their own music without having to ruin others classics?
stevedrums 10 months ago
@emeaney42 If they really loved and respected Rush, they'd stop ruining their songs. The should enough of their own songs to butcher.

I'm glad John didnt hack on Alex's solo. Awesome cover and homage to Rush!

how many are playing?? 5 people!!! Try it with 3 and then tell my how great they are!! Untill then, Geddy, Neil, and Alex rule.

I know that they could play this song only 3.. but they adjust the cover to be done by 5 people..
BUT, it sounds the BEST when rush plays it.. obviously
gustavito7 2 years ago
How dare they.
They keep covering Rush songs. When are they going to realize they're just no where near the Rush league?

You do know that Neal Peart fully admitted Mike Portnoy being better than him right?
metalhead1800 2 years ago
no, he's just modest.
freewill51 2 years ago
@metalhead1800 fuck no, neil peart was the reason that mike portnoy wanted to be a drummer in the first place, sure yea he might be a better drummer than neil NOW cause he's aging but back in his ages.....oooohhh man killer drum solos fucking peart would play!!!

Interesting cover...Rush never does this song live, so that somehow spoiled it...his voice kills it...also, the Moving Pictures cover with Dream Theater on it? Kinda lame if you ask me. ;~; Good try at a Rush cover, guys.
proudlyrushian 2 years ago
Rush had NEVER played it live??
KingTabor 2 years ago
@KingTabor They played it once or twice, but TCE remains one of the most elusive and most requested live songs to this day. It's a Rush fan thing. We don't consider ourselves "fans" until we want TCE live. :P Just kidding, of course.

It is one of my faves too, the chordal work by Alex is amazing and delightful. Here in tube there´s onde video by user MasterTracks18 with just the guitar track

soopahsoopah 2 years ago
haha dorknard, thats a good one.
I was so close that my camera couldn't zoom out, so I tried my best on gettin the whole band. Cameras weren't even allowed, but I didn't give a fuk.

ah I am over it now and have watched a couple dozen times... good effort for a bootleg +1
soopahsoopah 2 years ago
@choppog Doesn't matter...Myung's playing gets destroyed by Geddy Lee.
