This movie was amazing. I loved how most of the movie was in a documentary style which helped make you feel like this was actually happening. The relationship between the main character and the aliens was also really good. The violence seemed over the top at times, which makes for a great movie.

Although the movie was good, I thought that it's interpretation of how we would be effected by the arrival of an extraterrestrial civilization, well, silly. Sticking aliens in an environment analogous to apartheid (although it was good social commentary when concerning human social interaction), while they sell their weapons for Cat Food was laughable. The film was great on many levels, I just wish they put more thought into 'how' society would act if such an event were ever to occur.

this is an excellent review. the reason it comes across as a history lesson is because that is one of the core concepts of the film. People think they know how South Africa became a democratic nation, but all they know is what their commentators tell them. As we know the media will only report sensationalist stories that will cause the most controversy. The film is an excellent portrait of the problems that Africa in general still experiences today.

What? District 9 sucked, I don't see the hype at all. The script was weak, the idea was compelling, okay, but the protagonist was so boring and annoying I didn't even care if he was disintigrated without a heroic ending. It did have a nice realism that I appriciated, but the allegories with apartheid was so hackneyed and superficial it could be. It was entertaining, but the best movie of the year? This Kim guy can't be much of a critic, Almodovar, Von trier, Tarantino, all much better movies.

I really didn't like the movie. I didn't find the social or political motives particular clever but rather old and often recycled. Also I didn't like the main character at all. I just couldn't associate with him or any of the other characters. If the aliens would not have looked like stupid insects (which seemed so inconsistent with their technology) and there would not have been the Horror like sequences, I would have given a ordinary 5 out of 10. But with the ugly images I give a 3 out of 10.

I know that they were supposed to be the "worker class". But still ... the intellectual distance between the workers and the guys that were able to build the giant spaceship seems to be enormous. This doesn't seem to be possible in evolution and just feels inconsistent.
