@greyhunter13 You are SO right!!! what a powerful beak! If she is done playing and the dogs are not - she lets them know, and believe me, they know when play time is up! I have four dogs....and max can definitely hold her own with each one of them! Typically, only one of them will play with her at a time...it's like some unwritten code.
To the critics: A macaw can handle itself. If it actually felt threatened, it could bite the dog easily, if it felt it was necessary (and believe me, a nip from the parrot would send the dog running). Or it could run away. At the very worst, the parrot is mildly annoyed.
@ShinyNewRemy thank you for your comments. max plays with all of my dogs - even walks across my shepherd....(well, back when my shep was younger, anyway). she will hang on the door to her cage and play with them, and the dogs will bark at her, and it's funny to watch....but she's not upset and instigates play sessions with them all the time....and fortunately, they usually reciprocate!
@mlo21771 funny you should mention a barking bird.....I have, too often, heard her barking and thought my dogs were outside and called for them to come in, only to find out it was Max, mimicking their barks when they are outside.
I really hate it when people, who are obviously unknowledgeable make ignorant comments. If you don't know animals, don't comment using only your silly little opinion with no facts to back it up. Animals are extremely smart and KNOW how to take care of themselves. That bird would take out that dog if he felt even the slightest bit threatened. I only say this because as a dog and macaw owner, I know the interaction between the two.
@MsBlaird Thank you so much for your comments. I agree 100%. If you don't understand the interaction, or you think I'd post a video of mistreatment of ANY animal....you're crazy! =) I'm a die-hard animal lover - all my pets are rescues....including Max. I suppose the people that don't have harmony in their lives can't relate to a home that lives in harmony, either. Again, thank you for your comments =) Happy New Year!
@Matsikay: Yes I DO think the bird would get away if it could, you said yourself she can't fly, so where is she to go? She is backed up to the edge and her body language says she wants to get away, but if she turns around the dog goes after her tail, which is NARRATED in the video. I'm not saying she looks scared, just harassed.I stand by my first post! I've seen 1 video where the bird seemed to be having fun. The bird was above eye level of the dog, probably felt less like prey. Just sayin'.
@getaclueu You're very ignorant. Please stop posting to this poor lady who is obviously a good pet owner and KNOWS her pets well enough to know how they would act when they are not comfortable. Stand by what you want, but do it elsewhere....fool
@getaclueu: Max is a very strong, powerful bird, as all Macaws are. There are plenty of ways for her to stop playing if she wanted....and the #1 thing would be to bite Patch. Patch was a puppy, he was playing. Max has had plenty of experience with many dogs...and I just want to tell you, something they all learn right off the bat, regardless of their age is to RESPECT THE PARROT! when Patch was playing with max and he was on the step below max, do you think she 'felt less like prey?'
Why does everyone think this is cute? the bird is being HARRASSED by the dog and has to keep turning around to protect itself from the dog trying to grab it from behind. Yuk.
@getaclueu because obviously, others are smarter than you. Don't you think if the bird wanted to get away - she would? Hello? Would you stand around being tortured? I don't think so. what is wrong with you people!?
OMG!!!! Your dog looks like a clone of my dog, who is also named Patch! I'm not even kidding, she even has the same white spot on her back leg as yours! The only difference is our dog has a black patch on her other eye. Gorgeous bird too, that's super cute. :)
@crazyteensJHH I want to see photos of your baby!!! Patch does have a sister out there somewhere....how old is your girl? I would be beyond shocked if they were related - wouldn't THAT be something?! Hope you and your Patch have a wonderful Holiday, thanks for posting =)
@Matsikay We're not completely sure how old my Patch is, she was a rescue. We think she is between 4 and 5. We adopted her in Colorado as a puppy from the ASPCA, they though she was about 12 weeks old. She was abandoned with her mother and her siblings. They aren't sure what the father was, but the mother was a pitbull mix. Not all her siblings were adopted, and the few that weren't were taken to another state. I sent a message with a link of photos. Happy holidays!!!!! : )
@OdinsRealm didn't your mother teach you any manners? If you don't have anything nice to say - keep it to yourself. I didn't ask your opinion of how you feel about my (then) puppy, playing with my macaw. If you don't want to hear him bark - watch other videos.....preferably not mine if you can't be nice; that was the first time I had ever heard him bark. Now, go give your mean two cents to someone else and leave us alone.
@Bigpooper100 thank you - I agree - they are silly. I don't know how they can't see there is no fear....but whatever, that's what makes the world go 'round. =)
BTW love your parrot and dog getting along. Morons who think the bird is scared have to remember that they are highly social creatures. You and your dogs are flock mates. check out my crappy quality vids if you want Whackedgourd is my username if it doesn't come up
My cockatiel does this with both my dogs... Just indoors. We had an incident last summer when the wind blew him off my shoulder and swept him 15 feet into the air with clipped wings. He kept trying to get back to me but wound up in the field. I was lucky to find him that day, but now he only sees the outside world through windows.
i wish i could trust my dog like that. haha. he's not vicious or anything, but his favorite toy is a stuffed parrot and he's probably too stupid to make the distinction.
@lenarox lol....my dogs learned early on to respect the parrot...her beak can seriously do some damage. It's a bit long now - as are her nails, I need to get her out to get them clipped before it gets too cold to take her out!
LOL...yes she does!!! I used to hear her barking and it would sound like the dogs were outside barking ... used to get me all the time! (I have a few dogs)
TxtreaM - thanks for the question =) No, I don't worry that she will fly away because she does not have enough room to really exercise her wings enough TO be able to fly. If she is up on a high perch - she can glide down to the ground, but she seems content as can be just walking along the ground, fence and anything else that's in climbing range. =)
yeah - cause you can see they are a danger to each other already, right? My dogs play with her....and I'm afraid she would do a lot more damage to my dog than he would do to her....
thanks for your concern, but it's really not necessary. They say cats and birds have problems, as well as mice and cats...but I have seen them live in perfect harmony as well. Sure, just as they might hurt each other, they also might love each other instead....just as much.
She doesn't fly... but she can glide! The ability to exercise her wings is limited in her cage, so it's only when she is outside that she can really get them flapping. Even then, she is not outside often enough outside of her cage to get the exercise she'd need to lift her body into the air and actually fly.
I have four dogs all together, and she plays with all of them....in this one, Patch was just a puppy - and this was really the first time I'd heard him bark...and he wouldn't stop! =)
@Pop12646 & TheMaikel - seriously, they are playing...they play all the time. She throws food out of her crate to him and my other dogs....she calls them to her cage...if you don't have anything nice to say? Please keep it to yourself. If you don't know my pets (which obviously you don't) then just MYOB please.

if either the bird or the dog was scared, they would move, but as you can see the dog is having fun its waging its tail and the birds loving it too, i want one! :(
@Pop12646Okami While I agree the beak is too long, that is not a scared bird. A scared bird makes itself look large and fights or flees. This bird is obviously playing.
Adorable. And to other people, this is exactly how parrots act when they play. If it felt threatened that dog woulda ran away crying.
