  • If ya' don't know "Brent," ya' don't know Jack?!?

  • Yeah Brent was great but so was Vince. I listen to so many of the later Dead shows and it sounds like Vince is kicking Jerrys butt and sometimes it wakes jerry up to produce some magnificence more often than not it sounds as if only Phil and Vince really give much of a fuck

  • Damn that's good

  • I think the best Dead videos all have Weir in those short shorts.

  • I wish I would have seen Brent, the GratefulDead didnt start followin me till 91..

  • such an uner-rated tune....I LOVE first set!!!!!!!

  • Yes they made nice music. i cried when Jerry died. I want to say Hi. i had fun at the show. sometimes it was scary. i took things i and saw and felt a lot. i had to leave the place. i like the music. please God forgive me. Through Jesus.

  • they worked so good together...wasnt the same 4 me after brent.....alpine was soooooo kool,my hometown show.

  • wow cool footage, glad i googled built to last. saw furthur in philly july 23rd, was good show! they were on and rockn! miss jerry big time though.

  • jerry and brent had a great relationship...so visible. thanks to bob having his ties to brent...

  • Wow!! Yes!! I have the faith!!"

  • Is there a version of this where Jer doesn't fuck up the lyrics?...

  • Jerry was in great form here. you can tell he was chomping at the bit to play. they sound incredible.

  • I love Brent's epic pile of fungus on his keyboard:)

  • What a great song !

  • awsome.

  • up to our knees in the mud...the proof was in the crowd, stay strong family≈∞≈

  • the proof was in the crowd, stay strong family≈∞≈

  • they must have been happy with duralast, and wrote a song about it.

    "Duralast, built to last!"

  • 4:57 Jerry decided to sneak one more in on him

  • love this song!!

  • 2 blue stars set on the hill , only us that have lived in Frisco know the "Hill", miss SF and the Haight..good times great people that is untill Popa bear left us then the Haight fell into the hands of the frickn yuppies...grrr..all well, still fun to cruise the park and smoke and make love on the hill......:)

  • this gets me emotional about the fantastic summer '89 to fall '91 period that was my personal pre-problem era of LIGHT...

  • summer time is when the sun is shining

  • DONT MISS THE BUS TO HEAVEN. AMEN

  • All the stars are gone but one/

morning breaks here comes the sun/

through the sky now sinking fast/

show me something built to last/

three blue stars rise on the hill/

say no me now just be still/

all these trials now soon be past/

show me something built to last

    Amazing song

as the years have past, some of these late career songs of Hunter/Garcia grow ever more potent in my understanding- wisdom of the long years, and poignant beauty

  • love it

  • Saw over 250 shows and this one just clicks with me!

  • Built to last while years roll past, like cloudscapes in the sky...

  • amazing song under rated love it all of them i cant recall a bad tune even on their off nights

  • Thank You

  • who are the 3 dislikes??? WTF

  • that guitar "tiger" sold for like 875,000.... most expensive guitar ever, by far, and rightfully so..

  • @4hockey2is0cool I thought it was auctioned off for a couple mil.

  • i think this song is about chevys

  • @cralosfuentes you'r a dim wit!

  • @starbearshoreline correction. your mom is. biatch.

  • @cralosfuentes TO UNDERSTAND YOU I NEED TWO THINGS ONE HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN YOU'R COMMENT AND TWO HOW DO YOU KNOW MY MOMMY

  • jerry killin it love this tune they should have played it more

  • dont save your breath to waste your face!

  • I agree with "theSW1111" without the dead, I don't know where I'd be today... and probably wouldn't want to know. The Dead, and nowadays, GD tribute bands have changed so many people's lives... it's just incredible to enjoy and feel the love from all the people around you. Thanks to them, a lot of us are on a better path than we were, and I for one am eternally grateful :D Rock on fams!

  • saved my life, so many times can't even count them anymore. god bless the grateful dead.

  • There are times when I can help you out, there are times when you must fall....and everyone does at some point........Go Jerry!

  • mickey sure is a scumbag, cant believe they let him back in the band... only man on earth who could keep up with billyboy!!

  • I think they were hoping lightning would strike twice after touch of grey did so well.... oh well i love this song :)

  • I love youtbue. I woke up wanting to hear Built to Last, and boom, there it is. I was never a person to be able to hold on to my bootlegs, and now, it does not matter. See you all at NYEve in San Fran. peace

  • no smart people even look at comments

just read the title built to last

save your mind every one here likes mindless shit

if you dont rember that you dont feel the music

  • Please be nice or find another thread to unleash your venom

  • @MrSharkey11 bro chill out we call jerry "the fatman" jokingly, its just a nickname, his fellow bandmates even called him that

  • Fuck man, I think Brent brought a sense of life to Jerry that was never revived after he died. :( RIP Brent and Jerry.

  • @mase5701 Interesting thought. What about keith godchaux? how would you describe his involvement in the band? Did he hold them back or hold them in a place they needed to be in?

  • @mase5701

I agree. They seem to be kindred souls. I sure miss them both...

  • I was there!

  • Black Muddy River and Standing on the Moon were really 2 of Jerrys last awesome timeless songs . Never really liked Built to Last that much . Foolish Heart could rock on certain nights . Remember they opened 2nd set with it in the 90s in Charlotte and it was amazing !!!

  • @bigbuzman, What about "Lazy river road" ?

  • @bigbuzman ???????????? Never really liked Built to Last that much

  • yes very underrated!!

one of my songs of all time!

  • alpine shows flat out smoking amazing AWESOME R.I.P jerry we all miss you still today as the day the four winds came and blew you home

  • yeah, i love this song too!

  • They were not the best at what they did, they were the ONLY ones that did what they did.

  • @jackstraw : i enjoy this comment, but i don't like it.

  • 3 ppl missed teh 'like' button...

  • I'm working on it.

    grate song.

  • Best Band EVER!!!

  • love this song...

  • Very good version. I think this song was very cool - just too hard for Garcia to sing live. Too many words. I might be one of the real weirdos . . . I think Built to Last is a phenomenal album. Beautifully sculpted versions of those songs. Especially this one.

  • this was BRENTS (on the keys) last show really hurt jerry when he passed

  • @TheAbstractedmind

    Last Show 7/23/90

  • god, I would loved to have played Jerry's guitar one time or just talked to him for a few minutes.

The closest thing that ever happened to me is when Dickey Betts gave me his beer after a concert, I drank the rest of it and get the bottle.

  • If Jerry were here I'd buy him a beer.

  • @pimpinsplints

    he didn't like booze :)

  • divine

  • what a blast to have seen and hear you play love you brother miss you peace.

  • i seriously dont get the appeal of this boring shit? its a fat dude that took too many dugs playing mediocre shit, and fyi i dont answer replies.

  • @sluterry ur a hater go watch something else then stop raining on our parade

  • @jasonlichti

    lol parade. thats hilarious,

  • @sluterry

It's about love man, and being grateful. I wish more people could open their eyes and their hearts.

  • @sluterry, Hey Slut, It would be a pity if you knew what you were talking about, you wretched ugly little fucking toad!

  • "....If you can and won`t forget it..well I guess we could be through!..."

  • i was just 8 months old when jerry passed away, but i must have seen the GD in a past life. i saw the dead on 5-5-09 and they had an incredible setlist that night, but it simply wasnt the same without jerry. im the only person in my high school who likes the grateful dead, due to all the crap music today. dam i wish i could have seen a GD concert.

  • @outtamyway2 it's all good my friend. i was 16 when jerry died. i was fortunate to make it to a few shows 94 n 95. i feel like i missed out too at times but we are who we are and our life is unique and if there is anything i learned from the Dead is that we are all connected with each other, the earth, and the universe. time doesn't exist. you were there then and you are here now. What is so special about the GD is still alive because it's in our spirits.

  • @outtamyway2 See DSO or Furthur. I saw DSO 3 times and it was amazing. John Kadlecik--formerly DSO, now with Furthur--is the closest thing there is to Jerry. It's not too late.

  • @SqueezeboxJoe Check out JGB too. Melvin Seals and a few of the original sisters. Guy who fronts the band is a good player and sounds a lot like Jerry too. Good shows!

  • Jerry,Jerry...... U stunk up the lyrics again after the solo

  • @bartender31881 "dont waste your breath to save your face when you have done your best"

  • damn.....the fatman smokes...

  • check out Bobby's sweet shorts

  • All the stars are gone and morning breaks, here comes the sun, over and over and over.................Show me something built to last.....Killer lyrics.

  • jerry has like george washigton era hair, its great!

  • I was a nice guy and let him have some about the time he got his first drink here comes his girl friend she didn't want and beam and coke but they proceeded to repay my kindness 110 fold by selling my uncle and I pavilion seat for all nights of this show at a whopping 50 cents above what they had just payed for them they were suppose to have friends coming to this show but had micro van problems so they had to hit the road "me and my uncle" were two happy fellows needless to say :-)

  • Thanks for posting this, this particular show turned to be one of the most magical I'd like to say I remember how many times I spent at camp dead At Alpine Valley I peaked there as it was it was my first trip without having to go much of anywhere :-).

I'd never been in the pavilion there until these shows some guy and his girlfriend were way ahead of us in line he just happened to see me standing there with a huge cup of Jim Beam and coke and asked if I'd mind sharing a drink of it.

  • This is from the DVD Down Hill From Here if anyone is curious. Its a great dvd and the sets are pretty magical. One love yall. And yes Brent is probably coked out of his skull but damnit if he can play those keys...

  • dark star

  • Brent looks coked out of his gourd!

  • under rated song imo

  • They most certainly built to last. My babygirls fav. I miss and love you lauretta mack. I pray your up there jamming with uncle jerry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • if you had to pick one song and one song only ...to try to sum up the boys ...? maybe this is on the top of your list..st.stephen?

  • hey dumb fuck bob has the short shorts on. get your shit together

  • wow, way to prove to the world you're a douche. Maybe if I said that David Gilmore was the other guitarist besides jerry, that would be a rational response to a mistake someone made who never even saw them in concert.

  • I may never have seen these guys in concert (after I was born at least....) but i know there are few universal truths other than: you can't divide by 0, jerry wears black shirts, and phil loves short shorts

  • bob loves short shorts, phil loves wristbands

  • damn, thought i missed it....

  • @TWEC21 Im pretty sure i saw them in a past life too.

  • no, i mean, I was in utero :P

I probably saw them in a past life though

  • i wasnt alive when jerry died. i went to the gathering of the vibes in ct ... at trhe time i was into rush and floyd.... after i saw jackie greene i was pretty hooked. i just saw furthur in wallingford ... this seems pretty extreme but just about all music that comes out now pretty much blows

  • where can I get this footage. Is it on a DVD ?

  • "Downhill From Here"

concert from Alpine Valley, circa 1989

  • Many thanks!

Worth it , even if just to get this "Built to Last!"

  • 2:30 sounds pretty darn awesome

  • This is gorgeous... One of the best versions I've heard! Thank you God for Jerry <3

  • I believe this is vid from Alpine, WI. Down Hill From Here 88'

  • i was one of the lucky to see all the boys togther and b4 i seen them & after when i hear them i still get chills if someone if just one person could tell me where and the date to this show jerry was so on and it was flowing him doing this show

  • Is it just me, or does Jerry sing "Don't save your breath to waste your face" instead of "don't waste your breath to save your face" in this version? He had an awesome sense of humor. I have so much love in my heart for him.....so many memories.

  • I notice that all the time 2. What an uplifting song! Alot like touch of grey. Great when your feeling down.

  • what an underrated song!!!

  • @GratefulGarcia23 by whom? one of my favorites.

  • @GratefulGarcia23

I have always thought so. BTL as an album got really shitty reviews, but I always thought it was pretty decent.

  • @GratefulGarcia23 under rated by who?!?! almost all the heads i know love this song. no disrespect, just didnt think this song was that slept on...

  • @GratefulGarcia23

    I agree totally

  • @GratefulGarcia23

this is the first i have heard that it is underrated!!!!

  • @GratefulGarcia23 who under rates it? this is the first iv heard of it being under reated!!

  • @GratefulGarcia23 i agree

  • My favorite Dead song of all time, I never get tired of hearing it, Along with Ripple they almost speak of a fable/ the way life is, an oultook description

  • Mydland is on fire WOW

  • Jerry still lives in my house everyday.. i can still hear him echo thru space and beyond..

  • I was at this show. Went with college friends. After the show one of the guys we were with FREAKED OUT in the lot and we spent all night looking for him - while trying to deal with things. At sunup he reappeared at the car like nothing happened. I don't think he ever figured out where he was. We looked 6 hours but it only felt like a 1/2 hour at the time. It was the most quiet ride home after any concert, 5 guys sat there and didn't say a word for 90 minutes on the way back to Loyola Univ.

  • Sounds like my life in the early 90's lol ..

  • THERE YA GO...NOW GO OUT AND TRIP BALLZ...go out and be a hippie!...not too late ..since college

  • @sunsandandboats i c y 8 1 2

  • i am one of the blessed that have seen jerry and i can say i have a place in y soul that finds the lite in everything and i can say it because of him an i thank him every day for it and you can feel it in all ther music

  • I feel the same way as you. I too am blessed that I saw Jerry and the boys. Just once. I saw the Grateful Dead play in Birmingham Alabama not long before Jerry died.

It was dying Jerry. But it was great. The best and worst.

  • very lucky !! im a new dead fan and i feel the soul in the music and it makes me smile and feel better everytime im down. i am always grateful

  • grateful dead..built 2 last

  • i never loved brent until vince came along. now i really like the sound of late 80's dead. bigger than the 70's , but at its best, it rules

  • I used to think the Brent days were the best sounding. Now recently I just realized it's all quality and I'm thankful to have anything at all. God Bless

  • I kinda do think Brent sounds like a church piano but that sound was cutting edge back then

  • Brent does not sound like a Fisher-Price piano. He fills in the space in an awesome way in my opinion. Keith was just kinda dull for the most part. Occasionally heard a spark out of him, but he didn't add much. Brent syncs very well. You wanna hear toy piano, give Vince a try!

  • amazing. truly amazing.

this song ties with "so many roads", and "row jimmy row" as my favorites.!!!!

cant wait fer SCHAGSTOCK!! in two weeks.!!

HAPPY SCHWAG TO THE FELLOW SCHWAGGERS!!!

  • Brillant! Post Code Modulation, Kurzwiel, Ensoniq, 48k sampling, Midi, touch sensitivity, Roland, Korg, Oberhiem.

None of these were available until last week. I dident remember the shit. You are so intelligent. Run for president.

You rival the most brillant minds.

I am intimidated by your intellect.

  • We miss you and love you Jerry.R.I.P.

  • Happy Birthday Jerry !!!

  • Grateful Dead... So many good times.

What a Long Strange Trip It's Been..

    R.I.P. JERRY!!

  • these were the times of my life..and so many others..oxox

  • and.. heaven with jerry and brent

  • omg tears tears...rip brentan jerry

  • Love this venue, acoustics were great! Brent freaking rocks! Morning breaks here comes the sun!

  • give me something built to last.....

oh what a long and hard trip its been :D

  • wow look at that crowd,awesome...

  • Brent touched so many of us, It's not even a Brent tune but there are multiple comments about Brent. I listen to this album alot and with my 3 year old daughter , I will take you home, means so much, but as a 17 year old punk I always skipped it...but I get it...love..true love. Brent always felt like the outsider, but man he was always loved.

  • Happy Rainbows All

  • Not lucky enough to catch this one live...great tune. this sounds pretty close to the studio take excerpt a better guitar break. Nnice work filming this.

  • miss ya brent ............ not fade away

  • Very good video on this recording. Was it professionally done? It looks like it. The audio is awesome too. I love it.

  • yeah its from the 'downhill from here' dvd.

  • Dont save your breath to waste your face.....LOL...Gotta love Jerry

  • fucking tune

  • I still relate this song to The Gunslinger and his Tower; anybody else read the series? It'll remind you of it, too!
