Yeah Brent was great but so was Vince. I listen to so many of the later Dead shows and it sounds like Vince is kicking Jerrys butt and sometimes it wakes jerry up to produce some magnificence more often than not it sounds as if only Phil and Vince really give much of a fuck
Yes they made nice music. i cried when Jerry died. I want to say Hi. i had fun at the show. sometimes it was scary. i took things i and saw and felt a lot. i had to leave the place. i like the music. please God forgive me. Through Jesus.
2 blue stars set on the hill , only us that have lived in Frisco know the "Hill", miss SF and the Haight..good times great people that is untill Popa bear left us then the Haight fell into the hands of the frickn yuppies...grrr..all well, still fun to cruise the park and smoke and make love on the hill......:)
as the years have past, some of these late career songs of Hunter/Garcia grow ever more potent in my understanding- wisdom of the long years, and poignant beauty
I agree with "theSW1111" without the dead, I don't know where I'd be today... and probably wouldn't want to know. The Dead, and nowadays, GD tribute bands have changed so many people's lives... it's just incredible to enjoy and feel the love from all the people around you. Thanks to them, a lot of us are on a better path than we were, and I for one am eternally grateful :D Rock on fams!
I love youtbue. I woke up wanting to hear Built to Last, and boom, there it is. I was never a person to be able to hold on to my bootlegs, and now, it does not matter. See you all at NYEve in San Fran. peace
@mase5701 Interesting thought. What about keith godchaux? how would you describe his involvement in the band? Did he hold them back or hold them in a place they needed to be in?
Black Muddy River and Standing on the Moon were really 2 of Jerrys last awesome timeless songs . Never really liked Built to Last that much . Foolish Heart could rock on certain nights . Remember they opened 2nd set with it in the 90s in Charlotte and it was amazing !!!
Very good version. I think this song was very cool - just too hard for Garcia to sing live. Too many words. I might be one of the real weirdos . . . I think Built to Last is a phenomenal album. Beautifully sculpted versions of those songs. Especially this one.
i was just 8 months old when jerry passed away, but i must have seen the GD in a past life. i saw the dead on 5-5-09 and they had an incredible setlist that night, but it simply wasnt the same without jerry. im the only person in my high school who likes the grateful dead, due to all the crap music today. dam i wish i could have seen a GD concert.
@outtamyway2 it's all good my friend. i was 16 when jerry died. i was fortunate to make it to a few shows 94 n 95. i feel like i missed out too at times but we are who we are and our life is unique and if there is anything i learned from the Dead is that we are all connected with each other, the earth, and the universe. time doesn't exist. you were there then and you are here now. What is so special about the GD is still alive because it's in our spirits.
@outtamyway2 See DSO or Furthur. I saw DSO 3 times and it was amazing. John Kadlecik--formerly DSO, now with Furthur--is the closest thing there is to Jerry. It's not too late.
@SqueezeboxJoe Check out JGB too. Melvin Seals and a few of the original sisters. Guy who fronts the band is a good player and sounds a lot like Jerry too. Good shows!
@outtamyway2 Check out JGB too. Melvin Seals and a few of the original sisters. Guy who fronts the band is a good player and sounds a lot like Jerry too. Good shows!
All the stars are gone and morning breaks, here comes the sun, over and over and over.................Show me something built to last.....Killer lyrics.
I was a nice guy and let him have some about the time he got his first drink here comes his girl friend she didn't want and beam and coke but they proceeded to repay my kindness 110 fold by selling my uncle and I pavilion seat for all nights of this show at a whopping 50 cents above what they had just payed for them they were suppose to have friends coming to this show but had micro van problems so they had to hit the road "me and my uncle" were two happy fellows needless to say :-)
Thanks for posting this, this particular show turned to be one of the most magical I'd like to say I remember how many times I spent at camp dead At Alpine Valley I peaked there as it was it was my first trip without having to go much of anywhere :-).
I'd never been in the pavilion there until these shows some guy and his girlfriend were way ahead of us in line he just happened to see me standing there with a huge cup of Jim Beam and coke and asked if I'd mind sharing a drink of it.
This is from the DVD Down Hill From Here if anyone is curious. Its a great dvd and the sets are pretty magical. One love yall. And yes Brent is probably coked out of his skull but damnit if he can play those keys...
They most certainly built to last. My babygirls fav. I miss and love you lauretta mack. I pray your up there jamming with uncle jerry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow, way to prove to the world you're a douche. Maybe if I said that David Gilmore was the other guitarist besides jerry, that would be a rational response to a mistake someone made who never even saw them in concert.
I may never have seen these guys in concert (after I was born at least....) but i know there are few universal truths other than: you can't divide by 0, jerry wears black shirts, and phil loves short shorts
i wasnt alive when jerry died. i went to the gathering of the vibes in ct ... at trhe time i was into rush and floyd.... after i saw jackie greene i was pretty hooked. i just saw furthur in wallingford ... this seems pretty extreme but just about all music that comes out now pretty much blows
i was one of the lucky to see all the boys togther and b4 i seen them & after when i hear them i still get chills if someone if just one person could tell me where and the date to this show jerry was so on and it was flowing him doing this show
Is it just me, or does Jerry sing "Don't save your breath to waste your face" instead of "don't waste your breath to save your face" in this version? He had an awesome sense of humor. I have so much love in my heart for him.....so many memories.
My favorite Dead song of all time, I never get tired of hearing it, Along with Ripple they almost speak of a fable/ the way life is, an oultook description
I was at this show. Went with college friends. After the show one of the guys we were with FREAKED OUT in the lot and we spent all night looking for him - while trying to deal with things. I feel the same way as you. I too am blessed that I saw Jerry and the boys. Just once. I saw the Grateful Dead play in Birmingham Alabama not long before Jerry died.
It was dying Jerry. But it was great. The best and worst.
I used to think the Brent days were the best sounding. Now recently I just realized it's all quality and I'm thankful to have anything at all. God Bless
Brent does not sound like a Fisher-Price piano. He fills in the space in an awesome way in my opinion. Keith was just kinda dull for the most part. Occasionally heard a spark out of him, but he didn't add much. Brent syncs very well. You wanna hear toy piano, give Vince a try!

Brent sounds like he is playing a Fischer Price toy Piano. When Brent joined he filled in too much space and the Bob's playing got buried in the sonic collage. Keith added texture without playing over the top. My favorite Dead was until Brent joined. After that the sound became by and large too cluttered.
Brent touched so many of us, It's not even a Brent tune but there are multiple comments about Brent. I listen to this album alot and with my 3 year old daughter , I will take you home, means so much, but as a 17 year old punk I always skipped it...but I get it...love..true love. Brent always felt like the outsider, but man he was always loved.
Not lucky enough to catch this one live...great tune. this sounds pretty close to the studio take excerpt a better guitar break. Nnice work filming this.
one of my absolutely favorite Dead songs... I will never get tired of hearing it!!!! and yea Jerry is a litttttle doped up and messed up plenty of lyrics lol

None of these were available until last week. I dident remember the shit. You are so intelligent. Run for president.
You rival the most brillant minds.
I am intimidated by your intellect.

I still relate this song to The Gunslinger and his Tower; anybody else read the series? It'll remind you of it, too!
