Her death penalty conviction was commuted to a life sentence and she died in prison AS SHE SHOULD HAVE. We are learning more & more about this issue, eg. there is vast research on killers, esp serial killers, who had brain scans done & every single one had trauma to a part of their frontal lobe that controls behaviour. We all get angry sometimes, but there is part of the brain that allows us to not lash out. In killers, this appears to be missing. So no amount of 'sending a message to killers' is going to do any good. With a critical part of the brain missing, a message means nothing.

If -by chances of life- Debra Tate would have been a member of the Manson Family and send by Manson on that murder expedition in August 1969, Sharon Tate and her friends would have been alive now, some other people would have died instead, and Debra would be in prison asking for parole.

Compassionate release has been granted in other murder cases; the difference is Susan Atkins was part of a high profile case that has never lost its notoriety thanks to the insanity of Charlie Manson, and those who pretend he is other than he is -a twisted psycho.
IMO she should have been released. She was very young when she committed the crime, & absolutely brainwashed by Manson.
I knew Susan from High School. She was really nice. I think she got a bad rap. Yeah, she made a mistake by stabbing Sharon and her fetus but a sin is a sin in God's eyes. Running a red light kills people too so ALL you hypocrites are no worse than Susan Atkins. RIP Suzy.
My father died of cancer, so I usually compassionate for those who suffer from it. But in Adkins' case, I made an exception.
Perhaps God forgave Adkins, but I can't blame Debra Tate for not doing so. Perhaps she did manage to burn off some of her bad karma while in Prison, but she was there for a reason and that's where she needed to stay up until the very end.
She was sentenced to death not seven to life like the guy said on the tape. I think when they did away with the D.P. It should have been life without parole . When they reinstated the D.P. she should have been put back on .She not only murdered 8 people but also a baby! Tex Watson has married and fathered 3 kids due to congenial visits. They should all stay in their and serve their time until they are carried out in a pine box. It has nothing to do with forgiveness. It's called paying the piper

Atkins has had enough compassion. While in prison, she's married (twice) and had free education. She's now has free medical, including pain killers -something which millions of Americans who are suffering cannot afford. Her family and friends can see her and she will no doubt have a much more peaceful death than she allowed Sharon Tate to have.
Justice is not always seen as fair, but it is Just and to the family of Susan Atkins it would seem unfair that she not be released on compassionate grounds, but the justice for her victims does not extend to the fact they will not rise from their graves. The thing is, none of those convicted in the murders have fully comprehended the atrocity of their crimes or else they wouldn't have been able to live with what they had done even behind prison walls. It's simply time to say good night, Susan.

A 60% Atkins would still be a handful for law enforcement and California would have been locked down within days of her "compassionate" release. We are learning more & more about this issue, eg. there is vast research on killers, esp serial killers, who had brain scans done & every single one had trauma to a part of their frontal lobe that controls behaviour. We all get angry sometimes, but there is part of the brain that allows us to not lash out. In killers, this appears to be missing. So no amount of 'sending a message to killers' is going to do any good. With a critical part of the brain missing, a message means nothing.

She also said in an interview that Sharon was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in "Valley Of The Dolls" and this is completely untrue. However, the woman's been dead at least a year and I simply don't understand why people continue to slam her. She served her sentence and died in prison (as she should have). As far as Debra, I've already expressed my opinion about her. I still think she's still trying to get over the fact that she lived her life in Sharon's shadow.

However, I do want to set you straight on one thing: I have been engulfed in this case for the better part of 35 years and IT IS A FACT that Sharon's throat was not slit. This is truly awful, she served nearly 40 years, she's well and truly paid her dues and is helpless and dying. There are always two sides to every story, people become narrowly focused on the crime alone, but never stop to consider the powerful influences that lead her to this. Had she never met Manson and as a naive and impressionable adolescent had so many drugs pushed on her, she may just be living a quiet suburban life. Her behavior was exemplary through her entire prison life, 4 decades.

I constantly see empty statements on here that have scant knowledge of the subject. These statements are emotion and revenge driven. We need a more thought out approach to crime than just knee jerk reactions. There is far too much empty media hype designed to get attention and make money and too little education on the reality of these issues unfortunately.

Well there are many people here in finland who get 10-14 years jail for murder and there are no problems after they're released. We don't have many criminals in this country. We have compassionate law, just because person has done something terrible in past doesn't mean he will do it again.

That's right. These people should have all gone to gas chamber. It you watch the movie Helter Skelter and in particular the scenes where Atkins is killing Sharon Tate. Thometheious Debra isn't the only one trying to keep them in prision & the family members missed "being fried" they they repealed the death penalty in CA THAT was the compassion that was shown to them! neely I hadn't heard this but I think the emotional torture of having to face these people on a regular basis to keep them in prision was enough stress that it killed Debra's mother, younger sister & I think her father too, maybe it took it's toll on her where it ruined her family. There isn't anything or anyone that the manson family members hadn't touched with their evil...

I'm glad Susan Atkins died in prison, and I hope her death was slow and agonizing. Regardless of what kind of prisoner she was, she KILLED a woman and her unborn baby. The important thing is to keep your eye on the ball people. Yes Susan has been a model prisoner for the near 4 decades shes been in prison and I too believe that she should have gotten the release but no one knows the pain of having a sibling brutalized and then have the killer smile about it. I say that there are two sides of this coin and although Susan may have reformed her damage is done and her victims familes have no reason to show compasion that she herself did not show.

Compassionate release has been granted in other murder cases; the difference is Susan Atkins was part of a high profile case that has never lost its notoriety thanks to the insanity of Charlie Manson, and those who pretend he is other than he is -a twisted psycho.
IMO she should have been released. She was very young when she committed the crime, & absolutely brainwashed by Manson.

I knew Susan from High School. She was really nice. I think she got a bad rap. Yeah, she made a mistake by stabbing Sharon and her fetus but a sin is a sin in God's eyes. Running a red light kills people too so ALL you hypocrites are no worse than Susan Atkins. RIP Suzy.

My father died of cancer, so I usually compassionate for those who suffer from it. But in Adkins' case, I made an exception.
Perhaps God forgave Adkins, but I can't blame Debra Tate for not doing so. Perhaps she did manage to burn off some of her bad karma while in Prison, but she was there for a reason and that's where she needed to stay up until the very end.

Atkins has had enough compassion. While in prison, she's married (twice) and had free education. She's now has free medical, including pain killers -something which millions of Americans who are suffering cannot afford. Justice is not always seen as fair, but it is Just and to the family of Susan Atkins it would seem unfair that she not be released on compassionate grounds, but the justice for her victims does not extend to the fact they will not rise from their graves. The thing is, none of those convicted in the murders have fully comprehended the atrocity of their crimes or else they wouldn't have been able to live with what they had done even behind prison walls.
