Awesome music this is - it has core elements of the Beatles, the Band, and all the other influences of Clapton, Allman, and the rest of the band - a great album indeed.
Saw these guys at the Lyceum Ballroom in London before the album was out in the U.S. What a show! Blew me away, And I think the price to get in was about $2.50, Amazing.
This is possibly one of the best songs on one of the best albums ever released. I think the best song on this album is the one you are listening to at the moment. Not a bad song on this whole track
this bell bottom blues and laya are the only songs i really like by derek and the dominos well only i really know im 22 can anybody give me any other classics?
i love almost every song by my eric but therer are some that really touch me like this one and bell bottom blues and cant find my way home with stevie winwood
Ashame "Derek and The Dominoes" never got the notoriety of "Cream". They were a great band. Bobby Whitlock played mean keyboards, and Jim Gordon, was one of the most sought after 'Studio Drummers" in the 70's. Unfortunately Jim had psychological issues that were never addressed, and he committed "Matricide". But he should have received psychiatric help. They knew that he was clinically a "Schizophrenic" for a long time. Carl Radle died before his time. A great band that never got their dues.
@johnthehulk1 So true. Unfortunately Gordon's personality really stunk too--he was an ass. Finally Eric said he'd never work with him again, and didn't. Bobby also had a big songwriting role hear, largely learned from Delaney Bramlett. And we can't forget Tom Dowd's great engineering, wow! His documentary where he recalls the sessions is outstanding. It was Bobby's idea too to keep the tapes rolling constantly which captured some great takes that probably would have been lost.
"Layla" one of the most brilliant albums ever recorded. More rock and roll than "Cream". "Derek and the Dominoes" were great. I saw them at The Auditorium Theatre in November, 1970. Clapton played a mean guitar. What soul. And a little Carl Perkins to boot.
I love the fact that I just discovered this band!!! I <3 you Derek and The D's !!!!!!! why wasn't i born when this music was EVERYHWERE and guys weren't walking around with their asses hanging out of their bell bottoms ....i'm diggin the 70's man.. <3
faroutlindsey - I was based in Denmark at the time and my manager was EC's promoter so I was asked to support him throughout Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. I was honoured and it was an unforgettable experience. Stay cool - Fran.
One of the greatest rock albums of ALL- TIME.......great music, but surrounded by serious tragedy which affected everyone who played on this!!! Clappy is lucky to be alive today
what a guitar solo. i love that the first few bars are all one note but llisten to that attack. his economy of notes shows what a confident player he is. not that many but each one matters as the solo tells a story, has a beginning a middle and an intense climax. and this is the first song on the album i believe. it just gets better, ranks up there with the best: exile, whos next, revolver, skull and roses, born to run etc.
I want Eric to sign my old D and D Live in Concert LP. Fold it open and sign your pic for me Eric. White Sharpie and use my name so I can't put it on Ebay.
This was one of the popular tunes in the day, don't worry. It was when FM radio went corporate -'73-'74 - that this and music we actually listened to disappeared to make other popular, but lesser know bands/ ie: Led Zepplin, dominant over the long run. No fault to Zep, but they were nowhere near as popular as this, and a million other now forgotten great acts. Hell, Grand Funk Railroad was headlining stadiums long before Led Zepplin ever could. What Grand Funk songs do you hear these days?
@ItsCabs "We're An American Band". So often, I can hardly listen to it anymore, which is a shame. But yeah, Grand Funk was HUGE in the early 70's and they deserved to be.
@ToddSweeneyOnce Only huge in America - I heard OF Grand Funk as a kid in the UK in about '72 - in a magazine article entitled 'Are GFR the worst band in the world?' - but only actually heard their music when the internet arrived. I always hung around with rock fans but don't think I ever heard them even mentioned over here.
@sludgefingers It's weird how different it can be isn't it? I've read several posts while listening to The Sweet. A great deal of Brits say that Sweet is second only to MUD as far as glam rock. I was like, "MUD? Who the hell is that?" Cheers!
I am a male singer/ songwriter and I am sure Eric never knew you were even there,UK to him in the 80's was just an other day to make it 8 hours with out dealing with some UK ASS HOLE..have a nice day..
Those who love DATD should check out the box set disc III-- 5 blues instrumentals that are stupendous and can last up to ~20 minutes. Some of them are basically Eric with the entire Allmans Bros Band.
Disc II is outtakes from Layla, and it's totally worth it, too.
If this came out today, it would likely be categorized as country music (not saying that in a derogatory way). In fact, a lot of classic era rock has very country music-sounding elements. I say this as one who isn't a huge country fan - especially of TODAY's country music - but as one who truly appreciates Johnny C, Willy, Hank Williams, etc.
To beginning guitarists;don't listen to this recording. You'll think-"who am I kidding",and you'll quit. Get comfortable with your playing, then come back to Eric & Duane's University of Tone. GodDAMN this is good!
I'm a female singer/songwriter from the UK. I was invited to support Eric Clapton on one of his Scandinavian tours in the 1980's. His musicianship has always been inspirational to me and I am so proud to have been his supporting act. Doesn't matter what song he plays, or when, he's just the best.
@VioletDecapod His looks might not be much, but that's no dweeb; that's the band's fine bass player Carl Radle, who previously played with Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, and on tour with Leon Russell and Joe Cocker and co., aka "Mad Dogs and Englishmen"
Bobby Whitlock gave Eric Clapton a dimension he never had before or after their collaboration. Together, they created great songs. Without Whitlock, Clapton was and is just a guitar player.
Certainly one of the tracks on the album that drew away attention from this song, which otherwise would have been a standout on an overall weaker playlist.
You're right. This is one of the most beautiful songs of all time, but I rarely favourite songs without even a "slide show" or viewers to my channel will be bored. I have the Layla album in my hands right now and under Carl Radle Bass

After recording credits it does say: Duane Allman appears courtesy Capricorn Records.
He was simply a member of D & D and no mention otherwise is noted, although on my special 25 yr anniversary edition it notes that Duane is NOT on I Looked Away and several others.
Did y'all know that Michael Nesmith, a fellow Texan and once a member of the Monkees, actually wrote this song? Thanks for posting one of my favorite songs ever!
I'm sorry, I stand corrected. I looked at the Nevada Fighter album (Nesmith) and the songwriters are listed as Clapton/Whitlock. Sorry for the error...
Yep, you're right about that, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Listening to my big sister's music in the late 50's, early 60's - Buddy Holly, Elvis, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan - then onto my first albums - Beatles, Beach Boys, Dave Clark 5 and entering my teens with Cream, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Janis, I mean, the list goes on and on - we are darned lucky to have made it so far, look back on the whole history of rock and roll and even like some of today's stuff - keep on keepin' on!
Jim Gordon(drummer) with mustache became schizophrenic, often heard his mother's voice in his head.He did a "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" on her and smashed her head.He was inside for some years.
The more I listen to the album, the more I love Whitlock's vocals. fucking great voice to compliment Clapton. Definitely one of the most overlooked songs.
could someone tell me your favorite top 5 albums of claptons solo career? i would appreciate it if you would list the best live albums of his solo career too. i just want to know somebodys opinion.
My fav sol albums of Clapton are.. Eric Clapton (debut) 461 Ocean Blvd. Slowhand Money & Cigarettes August Live albums would be.. Live Cream (1) Live At The Fillmore Just One Night 24 Nights Unplugged
agreed!! did you ever hear the song used in Martin Scorsese's "Mean Streets"? It's heard in the background during an intense scene, making the song all the more sublime, yet powerful. Go check it out!
she ran away from me today--heart felt I am a guitar player Clapton years ago got me to pick it up and never stop playing ----peace --great song -well done-same album, blues power is a dead zone-eric plays his best,
I think this was Claptons best band --and he played his best -really into it all and no allman--just Eric ,,it was a live LP --in consert ............
I love this song too, I mean damn look at those guys. Wow.

@44Smith It was the best era. I know nothing about the current era because there's nothing worth knowing, it all sucks.

Definitely one of the most overlooked songs.

agreed!! did you ever hear the song used in Martin Scorsese's "Mean Streets"? It's heard in the background during an intense scene, making the song all the more sublime, yet powerful. Go check it out!
