I bought a 2003 Ranger 4x4 on tuesday of last week, perfect condition especially for being a vehicle in the snow belt. I have always been a Dodge fan, but this truck turned me into a Ford fan for life, the 4.0 in it is a beast, for only being a 6 cylinder it has some power under that hood. I want to put like a 5-6 inch lift(suspension not body) on it, or a body lift and a suspension lift to get the look I am "looking for" but I can't find any online. If anyone knows who sells them let me know :)
Was it difficult to get correct alignment and have you experienced any weird tire wear?and lastly I hear that suspension is very stiff is that true? Thanks I appreciate you taking the time to respond
lol ughh the k&n air filter gave my friend lots of trouble with water getting in idk what wheeling your doing but best to keep the stock air box lol but fresh truck not talking bad about it at all lol
god i miss drivin a stick ranger... my first truck was a 89 s10 (a fuckin beast of a machine before i crashed it) and my second truck was a 89 ranger 2.3l l4. i miss that old thing. my newest truck is a 95 ranger with the 3.0 and this bitch is hard to beat to death. i've heard of ppl puttin a 5.0 in these things. i can't see it, the housing is too small lol. these trucks are hard to kill though....
2006raven... I would go with 11.50 tires. 12.50 wide made my truck look smaller. I had stock brake lines but had plans for Superlift steel braided lines. 8" coils are up to u might sag w with a load tho. Send me pics when ur done. Would love to see it!
Back when I bought the lift it was $880 or so from North Shore Offroad in North Vancouver. Install was about the same price. Stabilizer was about $150. I found a solid driveshaft to replace my stock 2-piece shaft. Way stronger.
The 6" lift was around $900 and the steering stabilizer was $150. This kit was only for 89'-97' Rangers (I think). 98' and newer the price of the 6" lift jumps to around $2000 +
I have another video on here now. Just search my videos to find it. All those hates of the skinny wheels will be happy to see that I did eventually go with wider boots in the end... about 2 months before I wrote the truck off lol. Hope you enjoy the second video!!
huge props dude. love the idea of building your own fx4. personally i think it needs some wider tires so it will look proportional but thats a sweet ride man.
So gay... Only this homo spends that much money on a ranger. And everyone knows it's not an fx4 ur stupid. Plus u need wider tires cuz it looks like it's gonna flip.
@4wheelermaniac500 If you've got lots of money to spend - go with a Tacoma. They're built like tanks, and are a good looking truck. But.. they hold their worth, so even a 1993 Tacoma could sell for anywhere between 5500 to 7500 bucks. a ranger, if you want pretty low power, but great mileage and alot of options to do shit to (like the guy in this video) then go for a ranger. The money you spend on a tacoma, could buy a ranger and probably put a lift in the ranger too.
@4wheelermaniac500 For sure man. I was in between a Ford Ranger, and a Dodge Dakota - the ranger was a stock 1989 Ford Ranger, with a 2' body lift.. he wanted 2000 bucks for it. Thats ridiculously priced. so, I bought the 93 Dodge Dakota for 1200 bucks instead.. and man, I love that truck. 4WD, standard, and a bit bigger than the ranger, and much more power. a 3.9 Magnum V6 pushes around 180-185 horsepower, stock. If you havent bought the ranger yet, check out a dakota!
@4wheelermaniac500 Haha, I personally like the the V6.. its only around 40-50 horsepower difference between the V6 and V8, but the V6 gets awesome mileage. Your choice though! the 318 is pretty awesome.
Bad Ass love it i got a 2002 ranger edge super cab with the 4.0 i was just gonna do a 3 inch body lift and stuff some bfg's under it but your suspension lift got me thinkin... mmmmmm
dude your the man... i gotta 1994 ford ranger with a 3 inch body lift dual exhaust with aftermarket cab lights and cold air intake ... im gonna get a 4 inch suspensions lift and 35 inch muddin radials!!!!
well depends on what your gear ratio you have stock if it's 3:73's 31's u will be ok but if u go any higher on the tire size then it would be a good idea to go lower they just told me with 33:12.50/15 i would need a gear ratio of 4:56's to be ok and to give that helpfull torque that might be needed. And no there should be no kit for the gears they just need the year and make of the truck and splines and all that shit and they should be able to get that stuff for yeah...
BDS makes the 6" kit for 88'-97' Rangers. The motor size shouldn't matter. However with your 2.3L you will deffinetly be under powered if ur gonna run 33's
dude i have a 94 that looks exactly like yours and i am getting a BDS kit soon and some new wheels and 33/12.50/15's.... cant wait!!....what brake lines did you use?....also my buddy told me to use the 8'' coild upfront to level it....let me know if you have any useful info thanks
if your going to lift your ranger with that 2.3 that is fine and just like danyokim77 said u will be under powered how ever to gain that back u should lower the front and rear end gears with those 33's i plan on doin the same lift with mine and i am runnin the 2.9. i also plan on runnin 33/12.50's and when i orderd the lift they highley stated to run 4.56 gears to help out with such big tires on a small truck.....
Decal was just for looks. The truck performed just as good if not better than any FX4. With the solid 1 piece driveshaft, BDS shocks, and rear add a leaf, the truck was solid.
@danyokim77 NICE!!! I've got an 01 Ford Ranger Edge and was thinking about swapping out the suspension to the FX4, but something's wrong with the tranny. Every time I apply the parking brake and the next morning I disengage and put it in gear, it freaking makes 'THUNK". Horrible sound. So, I think I'll have to wait though.
@daytonite122 I never did my reverse went out and I eventually let my friend drive it who wrecked it pinning me in between a tree...haha but it drove fine in forward for about 5months
Cleanest ranger on you tube. Google is a main thing to use I still have trubles coming up with a figure for the look I want. But anyways now it only looks like you need a leveling kit and you will have my dream truck. I'd go with some wide tires tho but I also like the stock rims. Mine came with aftermarket rims can't hate it that much.
wow thats almost like my truck lol but i dont have an extended cab and i have 35's on mine :P but shit thats still a nice ass truck i wouldnt mind having myself xD
I found the truck stock is a guys garage and picked it up for $4000. But you should be able to find one for around $4000 - $6000 depending on the condition. This truck was written off about 3 1/2 months ago. I spent 3 months trying to find another just like it but I had no luck. Probably checked out 15 trucks from craigslist. Got tired of looking and having no truck so I bought an 03' F150 4x4. Miss the Ranger tho.
Lift, stabilizer, tires, and instal was $3300. Lift was just under $900. Go to the BDS website to check current prices. Remember that BDS only makes the 6" kit for Rangers 87' - 97'. Any newer and you'll have to go with Skyjacker 4", 5.5", or 8" and it's around $2000 at least. RCD discontinued the 5.5" suspension lift for the Rangers. You could try Superlift 5.5" but again they are gonna be pretty pricey too. That's why it's best to stick with a Ranger 87-97 as BDS makes a super cheap 6" lift
oh nah i made my own true cold air ill post a vid some time ok image this where ther hole was where the stock cold air was i made the hol behind the ligh bigger an a nother hole in the fender i then made a 2 sided box fit it in to where its basically a aftermarket kit but just aluminum and cooler my next idea im gonna try to build a tube behind the grill and make it like a forced air then ill close the box in and it'll be like a snorkle lol
you outta do what i did its kinda redneck as hell but i took the fan motor out of a shopvac and designed a housing for it inline with the cold air intake pipe i mean probably not much but i can tell a difference
haha thats the crasiest shit ive heard yet i mean ive heard of people puttin electric leave blowers on intakes and all kinds of crap but that my freind is wierd lol
Response to the K&N filter.. Although you get better sound and deeper throatier you actually get less power.. Stock rangers have cold air intake from the factory.. by hooking up this setup (I have it to) you actually lose power because you are sucking in hot air from the engine..
Might be true... I've erd this argument time and tim eagain... but unless your hooking the truck up to a dyno and getting the true results who really knows. The stock Rangers do have a cold air type intake, but the size of the hole that it pulls the air in from is pretty small. I'd rather have the K&N cold Air Intake over the stock intake anyday. The difference in power isn't even noticable. The K&N looks way better too. I like the sound it gives the motor over the stock sound too.
It is true. Cold air is more dense than warm air from the engine bay while it you will probably not notice I still put a K&N just because you get a throatier sound and I believe the performance differences are minimal. Some of the hard core Ranger owners think other wise but in the end you do what you want with your vehicle to your satisfaction. I personally like the throatier sound so I have the cone also.
proven fact .. wrong mine came with the fator cold air i got ride of it instaled a aluminum intake hose and a cold air filter from k&n and i gained 14 hp and 9 ft lbs of trq
Fordboy you're missing the point.. I said if you don't have a CAI kit and just sub out the cone filter you will lose performance because you're sucking hot engine air.. If you buy an actual CAI kit then its the same it is true CAI.. My setup I just removed the box and plugged in a cone filter with no heat shield so mine actually probably performs less than leaving it stock but I don't care because it has a more aggressive sound.. If I had a heat shield around it then ya it'd be CAI but I dont.
I noticed a difference but others say they don't. Made the engine sound deeper and it felt like it gave it more power. I'm deffinetly getting one on my next truck. At the very least it looks better than stock! i have the kit # for it if you want it
well was a nice ranger i got a lifted 97 ex-cab got rid of the shitty stock seats 5-point buckets kick ass got all shit faced went wheeling and now the body is fucked but runs great
mine's 16 years old (1993) 4.0L V6 with some rust on the frame but in live in canada where they salt the fuck out of the roads in the winter. 5 speed as well.
You can only get 6" lifts for 86-97 Rangers. Mine was a BDS 6" lift. Skyjacker also makes a 6" & 8" lift but more expensive. but they say they are the best lifts. Any Ranger newer than 97 and you can only lift it 4" Suspension. Anymore and you have to go with a body lift. 98 and newer Rangers have Tortion bars up front and get costly to lift even 4". Stick with older rangers if you want to lift higher. I'm looking for a 95-97 to lift 6" again.
that first pic is pretty much my ranger. 12 years old with absolutely no rust on the body. usual scratches and stuff. and i live in upstate NY, so a non rusted vehicle that old up here is uncommon. i love the rangers. i've got a 4.0 6-CYL 5 speed in mine.
im looking for a ranger myself n i heard that the newer body styles cost more to get the lift n tires on it.... is tht true? wut year should i be looking for?
UMM WELL I FOUND OUT THE HARD WAY TRY NOT TO GET ONE ANY NEWER THAN 2000 IVE GOT A 02 XLT 4x4 and im allways having problems with the tires or steering or suspension so im getting a 95

oh i was also wondering if you did the work yourself and if so how difficult was it to do???? cause i like to take things apart and see how it works, instead of someone doing my work.

Cleanest ranger on you tube. Google is a main thing to use I still have trubles coming up with a figure for the look I want. But anyways now it only looks like you need a leveling kit and you will have my dream truck. I'd go with some wide tires tho but I also like the stock rims. Mine came with aftermarket rims can't hate it that much.

how much did you pay 4 that truck cuz i want a 95 ford ranger
GibsonMan31 2 years ago
I found the truck stock is a guys garage and picked it up for $4000. But you should be able to find one for around $4000 - $6000 depending on the condition. This truck was written off about 3 1/2 months ago. I spent 3 months trying to find another just like it but I had no luck. Probably checked out 15 trucks from craigslist. Got tired of looking and having no truck so I bought an 03' F150 4x4. Miss the Ranger tho.
danyokim77 2 years ago
Lift, stabilizer, tires, and instal was $3300. Lift was just under $900. Go to the BDS website to check current prices. Remember that BDS only makes the 6" kit for Rangers 87' - 97'. Any newer and you'll have to go with Skyjacker 4", 5.5", or 8" and it's around $2000 at least. RCD discontinued the 5.5" suspension lift for the Rangers. You could try Superlift 5.5" but again they are gonna be pretty pricey too. That's why it's best to stick with a Ranger 87-97 as BDS makes a super cheap 6" lift
danyokim77 2 years ago
How much for the campershell? and how much did you end up paying for the rims+tires.

It drove just fine. I loved it. Got great gas mileage too. But the truck was written off about 3 1/2 months ago.
danyokim77 2 years ago
how much are lift kits now
3200000000000 2 years ago
Lift itself is around $1000. Go to the BDS website and search for your truck.

oh nah i made my own true cold air ill post a vid some time ok image this where ther hole was where the stock cold air was i made the hol behind the ligh bigger an a nother hole in the fender i then made a 2 sided box fit it in to where its basically a aftermarket kit but just aluminum and cooler my next idea im gonna try to build a tube behind the grill and make it like a forced air then ill close the box in and it'll be like a snorkle lol
fordboy111591 2 years ago
you outta do what i did its kinda redneck as hell but i took the fan motor out of a shopvac and designed a housing for it inline with the cold air intake pipe i mean probably not much but i can tell a difference
MazderMan2011 2 years ago
haha thats the crasiest shit ive heard yet i mean ive heard of people puttin electric leave blowers on intakes and all kinds of crap but that my freind is wierd lol
fordboy111591 2 years ago
all ya need now is some roof top runnin clearance lights. check mine out!!!
oldsmobilcherrybomb 2 years ago
Response to the K&N filter.. Although you get better sound and deeper throatier you actually get less power.. Stock rangers have cold air intake from the factory.. by hooking up this setup (I have it to) you actually lose power because you are sucking in hot air from the engine..
mixwell1983 2 years ago
Might be true... I've erd this argument time and tim eagain... but unless your hooking the truck up to a dyno and getting the true results who really knows. The stock Rangers do have a cold air type intake, but the size of the hole that it pulls the air in from is pretty small. I'd rather have the K&N cold Air Intake over the stock intake anyday. The difference in power isn't even noticable. The K&N looks way better too. I like the sound it gives the motor over the stock sound too.
danyokim77 2 years ago
It is true. Cold air is more dense than warm air from the engine bay while it you will probably not notice I still put a K&N just because you get a throatier sound and I believe the performance differences are minimal. Some of the hard core Ranger owners think other wise but in the end you do what you want with your vehicle to your satisfaction. I personally like the throatier sound so I have the cone also.
mixwell1983 2 years ago
proven fact .. wrong mine came with the fator cold air i got ride of it instaled a aluminum intake hose and a cold air filter from k&n and i gained 14 hp and 9 ft lbs of trq
fordboy111591 2 years ago
Fordboy you're missing the point.. I said if you don't have a CAI kit and just sub out the cone filter you will lose performance because you're sucking hot engine air.. If you buy an actual CAI kit then its the same it is true CAI.. My setup I just removed the box and plugged in a cone filter with no heat shield so mine actually probably performs less than leaving it stock but I don't care because it has a more aggressive sound.. If I had a heat shield around it then ya it'd be CAI but I dont.
mixwell1983 2 years ago
Your rig looks almost identical to my co workers rig.. He has a 3" lift though but with camper and 4x4 decal only in all white.. sick ride !!
mixwell1983 2 years ago

BeboAltizer 2 years ago
very very nice. i see you have the KN N induction. does it make a big difference. i was thinking about puttin one on my 2000 b3000 4wd.
fishininthesouth 2 years ago
I noticed a difference but others say they don't. Made the engine sound deeper and it felt like it gave it more power. I'm deffinetly getting one on my next truck. At the very least it looks better than stock! i have the kit # for it if you want it

sup bro im looking to get a truck to fix and lift im looking in rangers/f 150 tacoms and f250's any opinons looking for power style looks
decksonez 2 years ago
You can only get 6" lifts for 86-97 Rangers. Mine was a BDS 6" lift. Skyjacker also makes a 6" & 8" lift but more expensive. but they say they are the best lifts. Any Ranger newer than 97 and you can only lift it 4" Suspension. Anymore and you have to go with a body lift. 98 and newer Rangers have Tortion bars up front and get costly to lift even 4". Stick with older rangers if you want to lift higher. I'm looking for a 95-97 to lift 6" again.
danyokim77 2 years ago
Sadly this truck was written off a week ago. Broad ran a red light and smucked me. Onto project Ranger #4 now.

that first pic is pretty much my ranger. 12 years old with absolutely no rust on the body. usual scratches and stuff. and i live in upstate NY, so a non rusted vehicle that old up here is uncommon. i love the rangers. i've got a 4.0 6-CYL 5 speed in mine.
3wheeler016 2 years ago
Same yo. But mine is 16 years old and pretty much spotless. I wanna lift it though:)

nice truck there what is the width of your tires?
haughton09 2 years ago
Tires are 33"/10.50/R15 I didn't want any rubbing or fender cutting. They work great and I love the look of them
danyokim77 2 years ago
oh i was also wondering if you did the work yourself and if so how difficult was it to do???? cause i like to take things apart and see how it works, instead of someone doing my work.
