The opening shot of this clip depicts the 2nd Royal North British Dragoon’s (Scots Greys) at Waterloo, a Heavy Cavalry Regiment. Sorry Chieftain, not so my friend the British Light Cavalry Brigade who made the charge on the 25th October 1854 weren’t all Hussars and Lancers, the 5 regiments were in fact; 17th Lancers, 8th & 11th Hussars and the 4th &13 Light Dragoons, 673 officers and other ranks. In addition, they were supported by a regiment of Chasseurs d'Afrique and Scarlet’s Heavy Brigade.
Ratty sorry but you are very wrong, this was the light Brigade who are depicted in the film, the heavy brigade actually took place after commanded by brig general Scarlett and consisted of the Dragoon regiments and household. Light brigade were all the hussars and lancers. This battle is part of my regimental History (Heavy Brigade)
The charge portrayed in the film "The Battle of Waterloo" is known as "the Charge of the Union". Due to the fact that English, Irish, and Scottish Regiments charged together; and it was a Heavy Cavalry charge. Definitely not a Light Cavalry charge; there was a big difference - literally. Heavy Cavalry were deliberately selected “big men, on big horses”.
@RattytheSecond We all know that it is not Light Cavalry. However, the video is great and blends in with the music bring to the public a great overture AND a great film. I personally loved Waterloo. It is one of the most underrated films and one of my absolute favorites. You won't get this art again with the modern graphics depicting cavalry scenes.
This was actually a stupid bungling ("Not tho' the soldiers knew someone had blundered"). It drove French Marshal Pierre Bosquet to state "C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas la guerre." ("It is magnificent, but it is not war.")
This movie was about the Charge of the Light Brigade (Battle of Balaclava) which was during the Crimean War. Napoleon had nothing directly to do with that war.
I think the movie scenes in the background are from "Charge of the Light Brigade" 1968 with David Hemmings, although I think the music "Light Cavalry Overture" by Suppe is not in the movie.
Fan bloody tastic

Oh dear, my bad. This is actually a pastiche of two movies. The short fat guy (Steiger) was actually Napoleon, in the movie of that title.

I recognized Christopher Plummer and is that Rod Steiger playing Napoleon.
The musical piece is from a mid 19th century light opera of the same name known only for this overture

I think the artillery are the french and the cavalry are the British and that short general with the big hat is Napoleon.
