Lloyd Bentson was part of the old guard. Someone who took politics personally, who saw himself in the legislation he perused. Not many like him now... not many at all. Perhaps Ron Paul is one of the last from that caste. When they're all gone, you will see the absolute dissolution of society-at-large... from the top-down.

It would have been more effective if Quayle had actually been comparing himself to Kennedy. What he said was he had the same amount of experience as Kennedy when he ran for president. That was the only comparison time on their respective government jobs. Lloyd took what he said out of context and turned a debate into an opportunity to insult his opponent..
@kimonk He was trying to glean glory by name-dropping, and got his ass handed to him. Dan Quayle was a sniveling chimp lucky enough to be rich enough to be dumb enough to think he was important. A total patsy.
I saw this on TV, live I believe, and I just about fell off of my chair. Obviously Bentson wasn't one to bandy words with. This is probably one of the best political burns that I've ever seen,a real gem!
@Zebonka Do you know that Christianity is correct? The world around us reveals that G-d DOES exist, and the historical evidence reveals that Jesus Christ really did come to this earth and there is overwhelming evidence that Jesus Christ really did physically rise from the dead. Jesus is coming again and the signs of the end times that were foretold in the Bible are coming to pass.
Let us assume there were an idiot and a genius, both with the same amount of experience. Does that mean they are both as qualified? Quayle wanted us to think so. The response WAS called for; a distinction must be made. Same experience doesn't equal same preparedness.
@soicuw idiot, reagan was referencing this line. that's why the audience applauds and laugh as soon as reagan said he "knew thomas jefferson". for the love of god people, dan quayle served before bill clinton did, and ronald reagan did not actually know thomas jefferson lmao
@PantherAztec The clip of Reagan is after he served. Reagan is talking about Clinton. This was a famous line and Reagan was making a joke. This may be hard for some of you guys to understand, but just because you watch a video clip before you watch a different video clip doesn't mean that the clip you watched first was recorded first. Do about ten seconds of research before you make stupid claims
This is one of the all time debate lines, however Quayle should have NOT responded, therefore WOULD have gain the sympathy of the audience ( tv and studio), & therefore would have set HIMSELF nicely for a White House run in 1996 !
@7980COOL1 And he would have been crushed by Bill Clinton in that '96 election. Quayle was a complete national joke as vice-president and the only reason Bush didn't dump him from the ticket in '92 was because he didn't want to admit to everyone he made a horrible mistake four years earlier.
@groofoot It wasn't because of Quayle. If Bentsen had been heading that ticket instead of spineless Dukakis, he would have kicked Bush's ass to the moon.
Early forays by incompetents like Quyale into high office encouraged the likes of Sarah Palin and Obama to run as well. Too bad some eventually succeed!
Quayle - should have stayed quiet. Half the room saw it as a cheap shot - but saying that was "uncalled for" he only made himself look even more wimpy and stupid.
@LT1HILLINGHOE And you probably inherited most of it. With all that money it's amazing you haven't found a brain you can afford. "All liberals are satanists"??? LOL!!

@GeorgiaKev Sorry, extra chromosome boy....My wife and I earned our keep through hard work and sacrifice. Now I'm reaping the rewards....and liberals ain't part of it. You inherit a check from my tax dollars the first of every month. Give it up, lib. You ain't got a leg to stand on here. You are a dying breed, satanist.
@LT1HILLINGHOE You are SO full of shit. You don't have the intelligence nor the people skills to make even $150K by yourself much less $10 million. And the only stuff I "inherit" from your tax dollars is when I drive on the interstate highways or visit a national park--oh wait, you use those also, so YOU are taking MY tax dollars. Yesterday an old codger in my neigborhood wearing a Ron Paul button asked me if Medicare would cover in-home care for his wife. Hypocrite.
@GeorgiaKev You libtards always have a problem with someone who has worked hard, sacrificed and made something of themselves by the sweat of their own brow. That's your laziness and entitlement mentality coming thru.
Listen Skipster, I didn't meant to hurt your little ol' feelings here...but, I call 'em like I see 'em
Anymore BS that your small clanish dying breed care to talk about? Looks like all the bases are covered then..you can now pick up your bottle of Wild Irish Rose on aisle six.
@LT1HILLINGHOE Nope. I believe in hard work and personal responsibility, although I also believe in some protection from the excesses of the free market (the free market is good, but too much of any good thing backfires). And liberals are no "dying breed.".....conservatism won't ever die because it's human instinct to resist change, but liberalism will always win in the end because progress of the human mind is eternal. Keep the wine, it'll help you drown your sorrows.
@GeorgiaKev Sorry, I don't drink wine, I get high on life and liberals are a dying breed. The clown in office now has forever damaged the liberals. Sure, there will always be a small clanish band of them around (raping and pillaging) but America has awaken to what kind of people you are. Actually, the progress you speak of has helped destroy you. The internet made it too easy to see what you really stand for and not many people like it....unless they're satanist. Anymore lib BS? Hope not.
@LT1HILLINGHOE Well, you go right on living in your little right-wing dreamworld, my friend. If liberalism is dead, why is the Republican Party putting up a Massachusetts Moderate as its candidate? Guess the tea-baggers' potency isn't that strong after all. President Obama has "damaged" liberals forever? Now, where have I heard that before? Oh yes, I remember! Your braindead buddies said the same BS about Bill Clinton back in 1993-94.
@GeorgiaKev LOL...Bill Clinton was a moderate with liberal tendencies who was kept in line by Newt Gingrich. And not all Republicans are conservatives. A Conservative is a party unto itself in most cases. Listen Skip, obviously you're on the short end of the stick here and now trying to bring up more lib BS. Clinton doesn't even like your boy obamo the clown. What's it going to be next in your long line of lib BS? Hope nothing.
@LT1HILLINGHOE "Not all Republicans are conservatives." Yeah, you can probably count them on one hand. Bill Clinton was actually quite liberal, but he portrayed himself as a centrist Democrat because he knew that he could get more done that way. Making Gingrich speaker was the best gift the Rethugs could have given the Democrats back in the '90s. Too bad you guys didn't nominate him for prez. "Clinton doesn't like Obama?" Oh sure, how much you want to bet who he'll vote for?
@GeorgiaKev Sorry, I don't "bet." That's a liberal thing, like playing the lottery. A futile attmept to get rich by not working for it. You're just digging deeper and deeper with every passing BS comment you make. Do you ever grow tired of playing the role of an idiot who likes to spin lies? You need to ask yourself that question.
@LT1HILLINGHOE No, I just enjoy exposing the idiocy of right-wing nutjobs like yourself who make blatant, asinine statements like "all liberals are lazy and have an entitlement mentality." And "betting is a liberal thing". LOL!!!! Man, most of my conservative friends are huge gamblers! Man, being called a liar by you is like being called a ugly by a frog.
@LT1HILLINGHOE. All I said is I'd rather be a Kennedy than a Quayle any day of the week and you come back and say that my mother is interested in having sex with you. Typical response from a brainless redneck conservative.
@GeorgiaKev I didn't ask you to say anything to me, now did I skip? Don't stick your weinee in the frying pan if you don't want it cooked. And there is no way a conservative can be a redneck. You, as expected, do not in any way know what a redneck really is. Just like you don't know anything but liberal BS. I would also call you brainless, but that would be an insult to brainless people everywhere. I'll just stick to libtard, since that is a correct term for your kind.
@JustAFocus Yeah, I'm so glad that the Bush-Quayle campaign didn't engage in ANY mudslinging whatsoever in the '88 campaign.....let's see, Willie Horton, the Pledge of Allegiance, Boston Harbor, and repeatedly questioning his opponent's patriotism.
I was never a Quayle fan, but neither could I stand that smug, sanctimonious, condescending asshat expression that Bentsen displays when delivering this put-down either. Made me want to smack it right off him when I first saw this on TV. And for the record: JFK was/is VASTLY overrated anyway.
You know it always struck me as strange how this seems to be the "Best line of all time" because Quayle wasn't comparing himself to Kennedy, he was saying he had as much EXPERIENCE in CONGRESS as Kennedy did! As far as I'm concerned Bentson's quip was non-responsive or a response to something Quayle never said.
@DacronIV By running in a bad year for the Democrats (1980), his incumbent opponent had not engaged in adequate fundraising activities due to his wife's untimely death in 1979, and, like any right-wing conservative, promised everybody everything without having to pay for it.
