  • jeeez, 200 dollar worth of carton for the 4 boxes...

  • The reason the Leica cameras are so expensive is because of the quality of each picture. The lenses are really expensive, but not overpriced, because they are after all the worlds best lenses. Each picture contains so much color and resolution-information that the opportunities to retouché them later are endless. I understand that people think that it's expensive, but this is for people with special interest and not just for hobby-use. It's the same reason they don't drive Smart cars in Formel1

  • I don't get it, what are these cameras and why the hell are they so expensive

  • Why are these cameras so EXPENSIVE?

  • I'm sorry, but I could never own a Leica without the red dot.

  • I Have this and a M9 Titan!!! IM FUCKING RICH!!!!!!!!!!! TRUST ME!!! There's one more thing! It was only just a dream

  • Where the Lens is ? 8000$ overpriced .

  • German design rulez

  • its like 2,300 USD used now. This is my next camera!

  • id still take d3s or 1d over this any day

  • its fuckin $8,000 holy shit!

  • what in the world is so special about this??

  • @BBrtqB its hard to explain...theres a magic in leica you might say

  • @hippo71124 hmm guess ill never know ahah

  • @BBrtqB If you have to ask, you'll never know.

  • @blackdice23 :D

  • Very nice.

  • Leica is like Apple of the camera world. The camera isn't really subjectively better than a pro DSLR... but it's expensive, shiny, and has a little red logo that says: I can afford to buy expensive crap, but may or may not really know how to use it well.

  • @martinaee the apple. of camera world is hasselblad

  • @martinaee You kidding right ? Leica M systems are the most long lasting! Any camera would look cheap and poorly made next to it. I dont buy a lot of things, but i like buying quality products. The sensor has more depth and calibration than any other camera. Finally leica lenses are absolutely amazing in construction and optical results. Maybe you like cheap stuffs. As for Apple, you'll be happy to afford one, why despising people who wants to buy the best ?

  • Wow! you know how much this body only now, Aus $5500.

  • this is totally adorable !

  • I freakin hate my SLR!

    1. The weight of the camera and L glass on the Canon makes my shoulder back ache.

    2. The controls are ridiculous. I just want to set av/tv and focus, why is that so hard?!?

    3. Creatively stifling... push this button, change that setting.

    4. Where did everything go...Click the button and see darkness for secs, especially night shots

Not sure if Leica is better but will give it a go...

  • &000 USD only body plus a lense... Only for richs

  • If you have to ask what makes this camera the best, then you have never held one in your hands. This camera just feels like it belongs there. And above all, it's the camera that made 35MM shooting popular.

  • Could someone please explain to me what makes Leica subjectively better than other high end cameras? Is it the picture quality, the fit and finish, the history? How do they compare to the newest SLR's in terms of picture quality?

  • Leicas = Pure expensive awesomeness.

The original M mount lenses fit on the new digital M's.

Although i wish they came with a lens...

  • Wow, fit and finish must be fantastic on this.

  • man that is a clean box.

  • 6....thousand dollars...

I can buy a D3x with that money...

    or a 200-400mm LENS!

  • Now there's the M9. The M8 didn't come with sapphire glass (available as an expensive u/g). The M8.2 did. The M9, oddly, doesn't. Neither does the flagship S2, except via a very expensive u/g which also inc. a platinum support package. For a camera manufacturer who supposedly prides itself on exceptional quality why isn't the sapphire glass fitted as standard?? Given the price of the cameras I hardly think it's due to concern on keeping the price reasonable!

  • Maybe there will be an M9.2 with sapphire crystal, black dot and the "vulcanite" finish, who knows?

  • I guess I just expected these to be fitted as standard after the M8 u/g, and given the price. As it stands it's more of a back-step in terms of quality, which makes little sense.

  • Fantastic camera. I wish I were this lucky to receive and unpack it for myself. Thanks for posting.

  • MADE IN GERMANY

  • You could buy an E-3 and most of the SHG lenses for the price of the M8.2 body alone.

  • Leica M's are a gorgeous combination of German engineering and art. Nikon and Canon are just cameras. It's like comparing a Porsche with a Suburban. Maybe there are more bells and whistles in the Suburban, but who gives a f*&^?

  • SUPERIOR GERMAN ENGINEERING

  • ye~~~LEICA IS THE BEST ,HAHH HAHH~

  • a peice of art

  • fuck nikon!

    fuck canon!

  • SUPERIOR GERMAN ENGINEERING

  • I hope Carl Zeiss would make a digital Ikon Made in Germany with 24 megapixels full frame and make all of their ZM lenses in Germany.

That would be a great competition with Leica.

    And I hope Leica makes a full-frame 24 megapixels M9.

  • Drools....

  • Hello, Dream Camera. And thank you for showing it to us with natural dexterity at natural speed.

  • the M8 is a dream camera but i would have got "her" in silver, dont know why. The glas is awesome, i have a watch with this glas and you simply cant scratch it :)

  • Really, and what's so amazing if we can get M adapter, stupid idiot. And use any lens we like ---- YOu are stuff hahahaha.

  • Maybe film Leicas are "real" cameras. But digital Leicas are shit, surpased by far by both Canon & Nikon.

  • The M8 has a bigger sensor than the D2... so what? The D2 is quite old by now.

The S2 hasn't been yet released yet, so what the fuck are you blabbing about.

Also, PJ's must love toys, since you hardly see anyone using one of those Leicas.

  • As I said, Leica clearly dominates the market, right?

  • The ragefinder market is a joke when compared to the SLR market. Photojournalists go for Canon/Nikon SLRs for a reason.

And the Leica S2 has a competitor, Hasselblad mainly, and all other medium format cameras.

  • It's like saying that the compact car market is a joke compared to the sports car market.

Try bringing a huge slr on the streets and then try a rangefinder. You won't get noticed as much when you bring the rangefinder.

I meant the Leica S2 doesn't have a "DIRECT" competitor. No other camera manufacturer makes a camera with this sensor size.

The LEica S2 is the size of a Nikon D3 but has a sensor that is larger.

    And Canons/Nikons are just toys.

  • Y'see, everything you said can be ignored with your latest comment.

Cameras like the Nikon D3 hardly are anything like a toy. Leicas, on the other hand, being pricey expensive and elitist devices which are used almost only by rich photographers could actually be branded as expensive toys.

Besides, your stupid ass arrogant attitude makes you a complete fool. Do you think you'll be a better fotographer because you use a Leica?

  • Leica M8 is pure German engineering.

Nikon and Canon are just crappy japanese cameras.

  • And? Both Canon and Nikon have been doing way more engineering wonders than Leica ever did.

Damn you are stupid. Probably don't even own a Leica.

  • Leica Lenses are considered by most photographers to be superior to Canon and Nikon lenses.

If you don't know that, you robably are new to photography.

  • I wasn't talking about lenses, neither about their quality, you stupid ass.

  • Maybe in the past, but not these days. The Nikon 14-24mm clearly whoops the Leica 18mm at wide open AND it's a zoom.

You probably haven't been keeping up.

  • I believe that Olympus and Pentax might be even more innovative than Canon or Nikon. Canon and Nikon simply capitalize on the customers owning their old lenses. So the try to much new digital cameras to use all those legacly lenses. That's backward thinking in my opinion. Olympus designed a brand new format in 2001, which makes lenses more compacts. That's a progress. 24/36mm sensors contribute to clunky equipment. And I know what I am talking about because I have an A900.

  • So you are comparing 4/3 to 35mm?

It's like saying compacts are better than SLRs. Each camera has it's uses.

  • 4/3 is uncomparably bigger than compact camera sensors. I find myself shooting much more with my Olympus E-500 than the Sony A900 simply due to the size. I believe Olympus got it really right when it comes to the size. The 35mm equipment is just too huge for my taste. That's why I am very intrigued by this Leica, because it has a large sensor, and yet the size of the camera allows you to take pictures that you wouldn't otherwise be permitted to take with a clunky 35mm SLR.

  • Now you are talking personal preferences.

  • This is just a rangefinder camera with a digital sensor. a 35mm film rangefinder (like a leica) is exactly the same size, if size is the reason you dont shoot film, why dont you just get a 35mm film rangefinder?

  • well the hasselblad h3d is huge but they give outstanding results.

in the pro level, size doesn't matter.

what matters is that the camera gives great results.

  • Using a Leica doesn't make you a better photographer, but you sure feel better knowing that you have the best equipment.

  • It is not the best equipment.

  • It doesn't have to be the best. Is Ferrari the best? No. You can smoke the ferrari with a blown Saleen Mustang. But that's not the point, is it?

  • the m8 is not the best.

    but the m9 is.

and leica and zeiss lenses are legend compared to nikons and canons

  • a Nikon 14-24 is a zoom and it out performs the ultrawide zeiss primes like the 21mm

  • Well if that isn't one of the most stupid ass statements I've heard in a long time. You're typical of the 'Leica must make better cameras because they're Leica brigade'. Based on Leica's track record with the M8 (and other digital forays so far) I expect a ruck load of problems with the S2 when it's released.

You don't compare any RF camera with an SLR, you muppet. Get a clue!

  • Yet another immature statement based, I suspect, on zero experience. Try taking your 'real' camera out in the rain and see how far you get with it. It's inexcusable that Leica never provided any form of weather sealing on the M8 especially as the primary use for most will be street work.

  • If you're stupid enough to take a multi-thousand dollar camera into the rain, you should be buying a Canon or Nikon. If they are damaged, it doesn't really matter too much.

  • Yeah, that's right. Keep it in it's box or hide it when it rains, because that'll get you the shot, won't it? You're either nothing but a trophy hunter or an ass, you decide. You're certainly not a photographer.

  • ok i saw a M8 costed almost like nikon d3 so wtf a leica and no lens, for that money come on, give me at least a pinhole lensish thing, i wonder how much a normal lens will cost for that?

any ways people that only tell you buy a canon or a nikon and my fav Nikon D90

  • Dude, Leicas are really expensive.

    They are very good cameras.

ALso, they last a long time especially the lenses.

  • no lens..wtf!?!? lol how do they know what lens you need?

  • Are you kidding me with the "no lens" comments? Do you people not know about interchangeable lense cameras? This isn't your little sister's camera. And It's not a surprise that the M8.2 comes without even a starter one, being that lenses are usually more expensive than the body, and most owners already have their own...

  • that what i was trying to point out

  • agreed

  • if ur getting a leica, you would know aout what lens you want/need

  • I'd love to have one of these.

  • haha if this camera came with a lense, it would probably be twice the retail cost for just the body

  • It probably would be. It's worth buying the body just to be able to use Leica's incredible lenses.

  • no lense... wtf...

  • no lens? wtf for that price.... you ge tno lens...... wow leica know how to get there money....

think i'll stick with my nikon

  • wait it doesn't come with a lens?

  • Were you shooting this video outside? I kept hearing birds.

  • i dont like that it cant be switched between half and 1/3rd stops.

  • 4999€ God!

  • nice, would like to have one too, but the price is steep ... i'll stick with my Canon SX200 IS ... getting the job done

  • Is the new powershoot good? As good as a Leica D-LUX4?

  • I hope not for the price difference. I've had 4 Canons and I consider myself abusive with cameras. But I get great shots and love my captures. You can go to Flickr and use their camera finder to view photos by camera and decide for yourself. Good luck.

  • ooops see response above ...

  • wll this is more like a DSLR

  • this is better than a SLR, this is a Leica m8!!

  • black print and black logo! GOOL!

  • €4320.-!!!

  • Wow... that's nice, but rather pricey, and surprisingly large, too.

  • One of the better features is the sapphire glass. The diamond can scratch it, but nothing else.... so when you accidently come at the screen with an ice pick you're lcd screen will be without scratches (not saying the lcd will work from all the pressure lol) ,

for someone like me at university, it would be beneficial since i have all sorts of pens, pencils, razors, staplers in my backpack (art major), and I'd know instead everything else was scrached, and not the screen lol!

  • $8000 AUS and you don't even get a basic lens with it? I love this camera more than anything, but c'mon - throw in a kit lens!

  • A Leica 'kit' lens eg 50mm f2 is over $1000

  • i love this cam

  • Well, just have an NIkon f5 and a hassy, so too bad not an M8, well, must say, the m8 looks really nice and small and doesn't shout "im expensive" thou actually it is.... so someday... I also will have an M8 (or M9??)

  • I'm creaming my undies.

  • I think I'm going to get an orgasm if I'll stare at the m8 for too long. lol

it looks really nice when you got it out of the plastic.

A piece of Solid, precision German engineering.

  • Someday i'll be as lucky as you.

    someday.....

    I'll get one of these.....

    and also a hassy perhaps

    and a rollei.

    nice gear by the way

  • Who's gonna buy this camera? Leica fanboi's that is. But pros that working for a living i don't see this camera in their camera bag.

  • Björn Vaughn and Pete Souza (the official chief photographer in the white house) both work for a living, taking pictures with a Leica M8.2

People that can appreciate something special will use it. SLRs are good for a majority of photographers, but for the photographers that want something else, rangefinders, medium format cameras, and large format cameras work very well.

People that like Leica, do for good reason.

  • This camera is totally overpriced and overrated. I know that there are people out there only enjoing the "leica feeling", but hey, it dont even feels good in your hands!

I am no hater or pretender, i only think that leica goes (for me, a person who makes money whit photography) a wrong way.

I also think that the S2 will be a flop product. Why should somebody buy this overpriced camera? Because its from leica?

    Ciao

  • There are more then enough people who like it. It is simply perfect. - Take a Rolex. It is the same. If you compare it with a cheap Swatch, you are on the wrong way. I just bought a 8.2 and a 28mm Elmarit. And I'm very very happy. Have a nice day.

  • Why would you pay around $3000 for a RANGEFINDER camera when for around the same price you could buy a top of the range nikon or canon SLR WITH A LENS. I know leicas are great but if I had that sort of money to spend on a camera, I would buy a proper nikon slr

  • because SLRs are too cumbersome for many situations. I have a minolta x-300 and love it, other occasions I will use my sp500uz and will always carry my XA2 (its so light so why not, and its great for stealth shots)

  • stevenstreet is right. in 20 years ill still be using my FM2, but i sure as hell won't be using my d90.

  • I'm sure you'll have that same opinion in 50 years when digital cameras are near perfection and 1000 times better then current models Stevenstreet... thanks for your wise input.

I myself couldn't say anything really negative on digital simply because I find tons of cameras that prove that digital really works. My favorite digital camera is the Leaf AFi-II since it was designed to perfect all the inconveniences of other medium format digital cameras. But they cost more then Hasselblad :<

  • i use both, the irony is that film cameras are quicker to operate. Film has a nice aesthetic quality (regardless of how many equivalent megapixels it has). Sometimes a lot of grain can look really good, you cant say the same for CCD noise, aliasing noise and visible pixels at large print sizes. Digital is nice for some situations and is so much better than it was a few years ago.

  • Leica has a medium format camera finally and it's excruciatingly expensive. Also, these cameras are not for beginners, so we can all negate the comment on how these cameras won't make you better. The same could be said about someone buying an exotic super car becoming a great driver.

That camera is tried and tested engineering that happens to work with the oldest method of accurate and mechanical shutters in photographic history. It is a proper camera, as a rolls royce is a proper car.

  • I want M9 (if full-frame digital). Film looks mutch better, but what will i do about chemical waste.

  • Get some help.

  • looks old acts new

  • beautiful gadget porn!

  • leica to much money to spend on a camera

  • Leica is far superior to any Japanese camera in terms of build/picture quality. You cannot compare a Porsche to a Lexus, (Both totally different, one far superior)

  • I wonder why Leicas aren't more widely used.

  • may because of their price?

  • Comment removed

  • Are you saying it's too hard for you to focus? Rangefinder photographers, and Large Format Photographers don't complain, why should you? Leica is a great brand, but the photographer needs to be a photographer, not just a guy that pushes a button with a million automated features.

The quality can be very good if you know how to use it...

  • I dont like auto-focus on any camera, I find that even on my sp500uz I use manual focus, partly because the autofocus can get things wrong and is slow. Manual focus, shutter speed and aperture are all easy to get to grips with if you spend only a little time with it.

not sure I would ever buy a digital leica though (would get a film one if money was no object).

  • Autofocus slow?

    Hehehehe.

  • if you are using a digital camera and have shutter lag, autofocus is one of the reasons. When shooting a band or something with a lot of action you want the shutter to fire when you press the button not two seconds later. Manual focus is quick and easy on cameras/lenses which are designed appropriately.

  • I guess you never heard of 3D tracking?

Never had a problem with autofocus and concerts. And if I had, I could switch to MF anyway.

  • Leica is a classic...like a benz or bmw.

  • hmm, you seem to know alot about cameras. "or even a Hasselblad"???? Hasselblads are medium format cameras, they are relatively slow, the quality is unbeatable, and they cost $36,000. Leicas and Hasselblads are very different, as are Leica's to Nikons and Canons. While the Leica's quality isn't as good as say a Canon, they are still very good, their lenses are sharper that hell, and yes, they're a classic. If you buy a Leica you buy it for a different reason than why you would buy an SLR.

  • You buy it for cosmetic reasons?

  • why are you unpack this in a park?
