  • Listen to Helena Boham Carter sing this. Now listen to Angela Lansbury. Nuff Said.

  • @rockinandmockin agreed

  • I know this version is quite revered, but I can't stand it. Top registers have such a terrible tone and pitch. I realise this might be intentional, but this is, at it's core, music, so I would expect it to be musical.

  • @tommyk77 Theatre is not about music. If it were about music, it would be purely a music CD. Theatre is a completely separate and distinct art.

  • @m0ufin I've never heard such nonsense. Music is inseparable form the art. It drives narrative and it is the greatest selling point on Musical Theatre. Just because there are other elements, by no means entails that they are distinct from each other

  • @tommyk77 Okay? That doesn't tackle my argument at all. Why write it as a musical if music lends nothing to theatre, I agree, but the same can be said in reverse. Why write it as a musical if theatre lends nothing to the music?

I'm not going to dictate your opinions, but you're trying to say one art is operative. I'd say they're both on an equal platform, so you can't say a musical is "about the music" without horribly oversimplifying.

  • @m0ufin I don't think you've grasped my point. Theatre is a web of artistic elements. To say "Theatre is not about music" is like saying "Mammals are not about blood streams". All parts are necessarily connected. You're trying to cast aside criticism of a component by pretending it is an isolated part of the art form.

  • @tommyk77 Then you're confused as to how the arts work, I'd suggest. If you blend two styles together in order to make something new, you generally do not take the entire art form of both styles, but pieces of it.

In the case of music and theatre, to say that all the parameters of music apply to theatre would be incorrect. It borrows from music, but it doesn't want to be music in and of itself. The same with modernism and postmodernism, Augustan and Victorian and so on.

  • @m0ufin I'm a PhD musician, so I think confusion is unlikely (without sounding too pompous). I don't think that musical performance is not assimilated into the genre of musical theatre. It is incredible important still, and as I say, I don't think Lansbury's performance is musical enough. Acting, great, but it's stepping on the music

  • @tommyk77 If you think a PhD grants you special powers so as never to be confused, then... :P In fact, in this case, it hinders you. As a PhD student myself, though not in the arts, we are often told that our area of expertise is how we begin to see the world and tackle every problem. It's something we must be aware of.

Then I pose my position to you as a question: Can you have great music coupled with great acting and still have terrible theatre or is that an impossibility?

  • @m0ufin As I mentioned, I'm not trying to use that as an excuse. I'm saying I think a) musical performance is an essential part of theatre b) Lansbury's musical performance was not up to scratch.

As to your question, I'd say it's possible, since music and acting are not the only aspects of theatre.

But what are you achieving right now? I don't like the singing in this clip. Simple as that. Flowery questions or not :-P

  • i love her interperetation of the character, but i sounds like shes yelling rather than singing, which is the only thing that turns me off about this performance.

  • @vampirecaptnz Keep in mind, they are on stage, and must project their voices...

  • @emoTeam95 you can project without sounding like your screaming...

  • @vampirecaptnz It's part of her character, she is excited.

  • @emoTeam95 that doesnt even make sense...its okay. relax. dont make my my opinion an argument please...

  • Esta mal subtitulada

  • I saw this and was all like: SHE'S DOIN IT WRONG!

then I was all like: Aweh! It's a weirdo Mrs. Weasley!

then I was all like: REPLAY!

  • This is certainly my favourite interpretation of the character. Pure gold. <3

  • i love angela lansbury to bits and think she did a good job, but the accent is really bad and i just think that when you think of the original Sondheim stuff Helena just screams what it was originally

  • I LOVE HELENAS ALOT MORE BUT I LOVE THIS ALOT!!!

  • A bit random, but I love the flour. It's so affective. When she kneading the dough and flour's everywhere... Like, there's so much more to the scene. Love it.

  • I think I would like this better if her voice wasn't so annoying. Helena is the best by far.

  • favorite performance

  • Helena Bonham Carter should have studied this and put hell of a lot of energy into her performance and musical numbers and sold them. Not play Mrs. Lovett as a boring goth chick. Angela Rules!

  • @johnyzero2000 I very strongly disagree, Helena, being in a Tim Burton movie, had to be dark and cold. Angela, however good her voice is, does a nice job with the comical insanity but i'm glad someone portrays Mrs.Lovett as the cold, insensative, and yet still love struck scary lady that she ought to be. and also, angela's voice irritates the shit out of me, it's good but she should have just left the accent out

  • @MajorFreakout I love Helena but the movie version put me to sleep. I love Burton and everyone casted but I guess it felt too flat to me. I think maybe it would have been better not being a musical version but just a straight version. But I work in theater so I am sure I am bias:) Angela being British and cockney, her accent in the play did not bother me.

  • i love her but i cringe when americans try to do an english accent lol ... the accent is terrible.

  • @NathanJesseMcCarthy She's British............

  • @jbmanch is she :O ? well i never knew that lol .. but she sounds to steryotypical english not cockney like mrs lovett is ment to be

  • @NathanJesseMcCarthy :) and she is Cockney also, check out her autobiography. If you see her early films from England you can really hear that Cockney accent before she moved to America.

  • @kimrabb awhh well im cockney and she doesnt sound like me..

  • Ummm kill me buuuut she sounds a bit like a muppet....

  • wtf withs the singing :s

  • I love Angela Lansbury's Mrs. Lovett! She and Helena Bonham Carter are the best Mrs Lovett's.

  • Mrs. Potts

  • Mrs. Potts!! :D Love this <3

  • Is she English , Italian , Swedish ?????

  • @FriendOfBeard both Mrs. Lovett and Angela and Lansbury are English

  • angela is amazing but i prefer helena but they're different people it's not really fair to compare them

  • what accent is she going for, do you think?

  • @firestartertwistedfi Cockney accent I would assume, as it would make sense given the time period and social class Mrs. Lovett is assumed to be in

  • @FleetStreetNightmare yes, but i see i'm not the only one to question how successful she is :) by the way, i work on fleet street and it seems to me a crying shame that neither of the haircutting establishments have called themselves 'Sweeney Todd's"!

  • @firestartertwistedfi Well that is the social class that she was meant to be in, for both Sweeney and Lovett, his shop is supposed to be located in a not-so-well-off part of town, definitely lower class. And really? xD thats awesome! Well someday if I ever gain enough money I want to make a replica of the movie set on Fleet Street and run a pie shop and barber shop out of it maybe, or make it like the London Dungeons but based on the overall history of Sweeney, like a tourist attraction.

  • she's good at this song but the burning bit.....not so good!!!!!

  • i like Helena better. :]

  • @DanceBrianDance You're an idiot.

  • @SteveO1029 i'm not an idiot, it's my opinion.

  • MRS. POTTS!

  • que bárbara! que interpretación! bien lo dijo Helena; que no le podría llegar jamás a Angela, aunque no fue mala su interpretación ;D

  • Gotta love Angela.... so much better!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Angela does it better than all of them. She does it all. Patti has the funniness of this part does and Helena did try, and I personally like her mysterious of Ms. Lovett's character. But Angela Lansbury cannot be topped.

I'll still always love each of the Ms. Lovett's though. =)

  • mate I love you, finally someone doesn't feel the need to put down the ones that are not his favourite to support the one he likes

  • what episode of murder she wrote is this?

  • what year was this made?

  • 1982.

  • wow she really hams it up doesn't she! lol

shes really good :D infact I love almost everyone who has played mrs. lovett

  • I don't like Angelas Voice! I think Helena is better.

  • Helena has no voice at all. It's hardly a whisper and they had to digitally enhance it like crazy :(

  • yeah, helena and johnny can't actually sing, it all was just them whispering melodically and then digitally editing it. this is angela's raw, unedited voice. i

  • Well Stephen Sondheim says he prefers actors who sing rather than singers than act.

  • LOL it's kind of funny .. but NOTHING I MEAN NOTHING BEATS JOHNNY DEPP!! the original movie is way better :D

  • This actually came first. :D 197?-198?.

  • @ChrisTiNaThEFaMe Don't you know that his is the original version?

  • @ChrisTiNaThEFaMe Original movie? The original movie (based off a penny dreadful from the late 1800's) is not a musical and it was made in the early 1900's. Then a play was made (in the early 1970's, I believe?), which is what this late 1970's Broadway musical is based off of. And then the 2007 movie is based off the musical.

  • i like her alot :D x she is so nice and a gr8 mrs lovett, her and Helena both played her gr8 :D x !

  • No one is going to beat Angela Lansbury, Helena Bonham Carter is... so shit in comparison.

  • My mom has a fear of Sweeney todd (not the person the whole musical) and a hilarious fear of angela lansburys (Dont ask me how!) so when I put this on I went "Mom guess who this is!" all she saw was angela and she went running

  • angela lansbury is unbelievable.

  • idk? i think angela lansbury sounds good, but so does Helena. her voice is nice, but a.l. sounds more tired, but the stretch in her voice annoys me a little.

  • She is toooo cool

  • she is just Awesome

  • I Just Heard Angela Husband Dies i was Like oh no i feel sorry for her right now.

  • poor thing...(get it, u know poor thing... a song...from sweeney todd...and her husband died...poor thing...not funny) i guess i shuldnt be makin jokes about tht though

  • Angela's is meant to be something more motherly, and lovely, yet ironical and a little crazy, but not with the dark tone present in Helena's coldness or Patti's surprise when she sings. I like the 3 versons, thought. Angela is lively and funy,Patti is surprised and a little bit histerical due to seeing the costumer and Helena is extremely cold and dark ( the movie wants this)and just different interpretations of the same woman,so they have similarities of course, but different actor, different soul.

  • true, true

  • @FlameWish Makes you wonder what would happen if Mrs. Lovett was combined with all these traits that each of these actresses gave to this character.

  • angela lansbury is better than helena bonham carter. but not loads better.

  • angela lansbury is brilliant. her version of mrs lovett is kind of ironic, because she seems more like alomost a motherly type, instead of creepy, which is great because of how its contradicting itself.

  • @jorgeo23 Um..... she sounds a bit like a Chinese/Australian hybrid though.

  • no es la memjor señora lovets que he vsto en mi vida

    es la mejor

    i love sweeny todd!!!

como siempre lo he dicho lo priemro es lo mejor

    jajajja

  • this version of mrs lovett is good, she is more gross and disgusting wich is wat u would expect out of som1 like her if u listen 2 the song haha....the movie version of her is also good just cuz i think it is lol

  • haha, i was just thinking that if this was in real life, sweeney todd would have ran off screaming if she yelles" Ah Custamar!" and pointed at him with a knife, saying"wait!"

  • Omg so true ! :D

    rofl

    XD

  • Sweeney never runs from anyone. Never.

  • people stop dissin this play i love the movie too but this is clasic acting so if u dont like it dont watch it

  • Do you mean the "Broadway version" because even the movie is considered an opera.

  • I really prefer Helena Bonham Carter's version in the movie. This lady seems to old for the part, I don't think she sings as well as Helena, and she speaks with rythm more than singing...

  • I get what your saying, but there really is no age limit for Mrs. Lovett, I mean you have to be women and i would say 30s and up. But Mrs. Lovett doesn't have to be young. Im not really sure who I like better. I did liked Angela Lansbury (the women in this video) because she applied the character better i think. Ive read the original script for Sweeney Todd several times, and Mrs. Lovett is supposed to be very gritty and a bit gross, which is how Angela sung. Helena sung more subtle and sweet.

  • I understand what you are saying too, maybe it's juste because I first saw the movie and the play after... I just felt like Angela Lansbury makes Mrs Lovett more like a granny, and I can't imagine a granny making pies with people! Hihihi! I found interesting the fact that Helena made her more coloured, more dynamic. I connected more with Mrs Lovett in the movie than in the play for that. But I didn't read the script, so maybe I'm completly wrong too!

  • Yeah, i agree with you on the granny part. haha. I think for the movie they wanted someone with a voice that wasn't too terribly strong (since not to many movie goers want to hear a load of opera) and I think that was Helena. Her voice is subtle i think, which fits for the movie. And this sounds shallow, but thats the way movies are: I think they also wanted Mrs. Lovett to be more beautiful in the movie, and less nasty. Im just glad they kept the nasty-ness of Mrs. Lovett during worst pies.

  • good point

  • I've never seen a granny move that Angela Lansbury's Mrs. Lovett. And if you see the entire play, you'll see Lansbury's Mrs. Lovett hits on Mr. Todd a lot and wants sex. PLUS she's friggin crazy.

  • HBC just opened her mouth and hoped sound came out. It did come off as subtle though, but when she sang this song the orchestrations overpowerd her and she didn't even seem to understand the subtext she was singing. Angela Lansbury's interpretation ont he other hand will go down in history.

  • Funny you say that because I feel just the opposite. HBC is just speaking with rhythm. But Angela Lansbury is projecting and really singing and supporting her voice from her abdomen.

  • I honestly like the way the songs sound in the film, but then again everything in a movie's made to be perfect and shit. XD

  • She has laringitis when she sang this song and she still sound AMAZING!

  • i love tims version of this play...but the original is so much better..their emotions are so much more..well raw if you wanna put it that way hha

  • The only reason she sounds different than usual here is because of the acccent.I saw an interveiw, and Angela basically said that this was her favorite role.I wonder why big celabrity's like her never post comments on Youtube.

  • Well she is purposefully sounding strange here and its great but if you want to hear her realy singing voice look into mame and her version of gypsy that gives a much clearer picture of what angela normal voice sounds like.

  • That song is really impressing. I love it.

  • Aww, her voice is so cute!

  • yes that is true

  • huh i wonder wat angelas voice actually souds like. thats always been her thing but did anybody realize that she doesnt actually sing like that? shed be alot alot less anoying if she sang nomally. BUT she is still pretty good

  • Oh my! No, she doesn't really sound like that. You may remember her from your childhood in many musicals (if nothing else, Mrs Potts in Beauty and The Beast?)

She sings well, but this is more of a character voice.

Your screen name is FutureLovett--do you want to play the role some day?

If so, I'm sure you have noticed some actresses (angela) have used different voice where as some (helena) used their own. And of course between them many ppl have done their own interpretation

  • Nothing wrong with Burton's version. He and Sondheim wanted to concentrate on a version that concentrated on the main characters and actions. I still love it and the OBC. You can own both versions like I do.

  • i <3 this song. i love lansbury too! the translation is a little off in some places. like instead of when she says "and tastes like ...well pitty" in spanish subtitles it says, "it tastes like...well you know" it could have been "que lastima" which means "(well) what a shame"...there's a few of those throughout as there is a few grammatical mistakes. but subtitles are always appreciated, thanks for posting and thank you for being so considerate to people who are learning the language. :D

  • I LOVE ANGELA LANSBURY!

  • the should murder she wrote a broadway production

  • lol I love Angela so much

Download the original version of the song she sings. It's so great. :D

  • You'll notice that it's in a different key than the movie. A half step higher.

  • SHE'S A MOG!!!

  • I Likee this version,

but i loved it when patti lupone sang

    it [:

  • Remember;

Tim Burton's version is...uhm...darker than this one, I'd say.

Either way, I like both, but, different version

  • i hate when i get thumbs down for an honest opinion. i didn't insult anyone.

    sheesh...

  • the way she has her hair looks like dog ears O_O

  • There was another video with a MUCH better performance by Angela, but youtube removed it. Also, for all the people saying she sucks, remember that this version is more comedic than Burton's, and that Angela had to sing this like 500 times to a live audience without the voice editing that Helena had in her version.

  • I agree. More like 500000000 times better. I cringe when I hear this version.

  • Thank You

  • god, the fact that anyone could sing that part. there's hardly a second to breathe and angela landsbury did it, on stage, while moving around. helena bonham carter did great, but in the movies, they get to record it in the studio & reshoot it however many times til its perfect. it's not the same skill.

  • shes' so awesome! i love the song by anyone who sings it

  • I Love Her But I also Love Helena The Best

  • This woman!?

    Dude, it's Angela Lansbury!

  • lol, well i didn't know that.

  • if it wasnt dramatic on stage then it wouldnt keep the audiences interest.

  • I hate to say it, but I don't like Angela in this role. I love Patti Lupone as Mrs. Lovett ... I don't think anyone else can do it like she can!

  • This one is certainly more comedic, whereas Burton's version is more tragic and dark. With that said, I don't think Carter to do this role, and I don't think Lansbury could do the film role, because they're so completely different.

  • i love her! shes so energetic on stage and adds comedy to the play to not make it seem so depressing like tim burtons version. tim burtons version was good, but i prefer this better :)

  • God I love how she portrays Mrs. Lovett!

  • notice.. helena says that she has never sung before except for in the shower and there was this scene where they recorded her and she didnt sound like in the movie. they kinda fix/edit the voices before they put them on cd's so yea.. but i also perfer helenas version of all the songs in sweeney todd.

  • Though I far prefer Helena Bonham Carter's voice, I still think Angela Lansbury is the best Mrs. Lovett. HBC is simply too young, too sexy, too waifish - Lansbury rightly plays her as a burnt-out old hag, a comic, slightly pitiful character.

  • I was really disappointed in the film,,,LOVE Johnny Depp, and Helena,, but really Angela is this whacked out old lady who you can really "see" catching and cooking cats. I wish Tim Burton hadn't been soooo serious,,, if you've only seen the movie,, by all means PLEASE do yourself a favor and rent this version. It's a whole entirely different "thing"!!!

  • im sorry but i hate the play. the movie is amazing, but thats partly because its a movie and you can have a lot more varitey with music and special effects. but still. i love helena. shes georgous. and i love johnny depp. the people in the play were kinda ugly.

  • Wow, that's so polite.

This was back then in 1979 (actually, the taping was in 1982 I think), when they didn't have those special effects in movies or plays.

And you don't like the play because the people were ugly? Well shame on you, if you judge every play like that. You could say the same about Patti LuPone or Chita Rivera (sorry if I spelled it wrong)

Helena can't even be compared with Angela, that's how great she is.

  • Oh, just to say this, I don't find Patti or Chita or Angela ugly, just naming some famous Broadway legends.

  • so who do you like? helena B.C.? pfft!

  • WAIT!!! forget the comment i said earlier. i didn't read it with my glasses, i thought you said something else.

also, i mean to say is that helena is good, but not my very favorite.

you know what? i was never here. sorry.

  • don't judge them because you think they're ugly..the play is good and funny, but yes,I prefer HBC voice.

  • me2

  • I hate the fact that people keep stressing the craziness of Angela's version. I mean, it's ridiculous. "Helena is better!!!! This is so crazy. She's so much better at it." I doubt one of you guys phrased it that way, but it's an example. THEY ARE ALL DIFFERENT ADAPTATIONS OF ONE CHARACTER.

Patti LuPone took liberty with the character and tried to squeeze humour out of it. The 2005 revival was actually a little more light hearted than the original, which can be seen through Patti's performance.

  • i get what you're saying, but we still all have our preferences. they're all good. i personally prefer helena's adaption. and being an actress i understand that everyone sees things differently, so once again, i completely get what you're saying

  • I know I'm going to get flamed but i like helena the most, her voice sounds smoother. I like it better. Angela sounds like she's crapping and singing at the same time.

  • I agree, don't worry.

  • Heh. I think she's cool. Helena, Angela, and Patti all are pretty good-they have their own unique style. You cant really compare them. They have their different ways to do everything. Not all actors(actresses) can do everything the same as everyone else. Thats why I like all three. =] Now I cant say that the movie was better-because I havent seen the play. But I bet it is just as good.

Anyway, thats my input. =) They all rock.

    Period.

  • it was funny how she said 'ah custama' in the begining but i still like the movie better

  • 1. Helena is not married to Tim.They live together.

    2. I quote Helena:"Sexual favors don't get me anything."Helena had to do the audition just as everyone else.

    3. She wasn't a great actress.SHE IS A GREAT ACTRESS.(stress on the 'IS')(and will be :p)

    4. For a non-professional singer, her voice is very good(and way better than the voice of some modern day 'singers')

    5. every actor had to sing in parts in the studio.

Musical & movie R 2 different things as you say yourself, don't compare them

  • The subs are way off. Not even dynamic or literal...

Still, Angela and George became my favorites even though I saw them after watching the movie. I still like Helena and Johnny (with his voice much higher than the role was intended to...). But, these are different types of acting, me guesses...

  • She is a way better crazy person but I prefer helena. But they fit there parts.

  • thany you, musicXchicaXoxo. That's excatly wat im trying to put out and u just worded wat im tryin to say so corretly.

  • PEOPLE! both angela and helena are VERY talented. you have to understand, there are MANY WAYS to perform and recieve all kinds of performances. helena is certainly better for film, while she would have a VERY rough time pulling of a decent broadway-esque character. i love them both personally. :) its just not fair to compare two such differently talented women!

  • now THIS makes sense :D Agree: Just love them both ^^

  • Ehhhhh I like movie version wayyyyyy betr

  • honestly, me too. And it had nothing to do with my obsession with Johnny Depp............ ok maybe it does LOL

  • I love how he just keeps trying to chew the pie through the whole song. XDD funny..

  • spongebobmusicals

helena would so NOT pass out. she might not be able to keep her breath for a song like this but still, and i agree with "shakennotstired".

  • angela has an air of being the crazy old lady with terrets next door. =] i like her!

but i do think helena is best, she makes ms.lovett seem younger and more sexual, so its easier to see her falling in love with sweeney. patti is second best, she makes it funny and dark at the same time. =]

  • I love how she sings this. Angela, Helena and Patti are my favorites

  • patti & angela

    are the best

    they can truly visaulize mrs.lovett

    look and sing the part

    with the HEARTY voice <33

  • its kinda annoying people who argue whos a better mrs.lovett

helena has a great role 4 mrs.lovett in the movies

angela is a great role 4 broadway

  • I watch this dvd often...Angela Lansbury is the BEST :)

  • Ok, the role originated from Angela Lansbury, so you have to give your props to her. She did a great job, I think. And if she hadn't done this, whose to say Helena would've? I loved Helena in the movie, I think she was the perfect fit. But she has said in interviews how much she loved the musical and Angela's portrayal and how she looked up to her. So...give it up for both of them, because that's a difficult song and they both pulled it off pretty well. So did Patty Lupone too! lol

  • My thoughts EXACTLY!! Thank you!!!

  • No problemo!!
