He moved the truss rod then said it looks straight? NO! The wood doesn't magically shift automatically. You need to wait roughly 10 minutes to actually see a change.
Expertvillage, Thank you so much. I just got my Fender Stratocaster yesterday. I had ordered it from AMA so I did not know how it was set up. Let me say first I love this guitar, but she was a little high on the setup. I was so worried about trying to ajust it myself, but you guided me through this . I can not believe what that very small adjustment did. She plays like sweet.
I had to loosen the trust rod to stop fret buzzing, but since It's my first time setting up a guitar I'm kinda worried what would happen if it is too loose.
Does tross rod adjsutment have anything to do with effecting your tuning?... i noticed my strings are tuned perfectly at open notes, but when i play them on the fret board, certain notes below the 12th fret are showing up slightly sharper than they should be.... does this have to do with how my neck is angled and i need i trust rod adjustment? i have a squier classic vibe 50's stratocaster and ive had it for 3 months and recently switched from 9 gauge to 10.
@MineSweepingKent i know hot to that but ive heard that since my guitar is made in china, that sometimes the chinese dont make he fret wire right and they come out higher or lower than their sapose to be and thats what throws off the intonation like that.
The way I was taught is only turn it a quarter turn and you take the strings loose first, then wait 20 min. and tune it and check it. if it needs more then repeat. you may not need to go a full quarter.but you still should wait 20 min. this gives the wood time to adjust. if you rush it. it can warp your or crack the neck.
I have a question: do you loosen the strings when doing that or do you keep them in tune? I heard that when you keep them in tune, the pressure on the neck is so high that the neck can snap. I have an Ibanez where the neck is a bit thinner than on a strat.
How should I do it without causing any damage to your guitar?
Wow my guitar is a piece of shit copy fender strat, i just found out the rod is fucked aswell, when i try to turn it it doesnt turn the rod but the screw driver just flops around(not a screw driver but the instrument tht came with the guitar...dont know wat u call it). Any advise, the guitar is brand new!
Thanks for your videos. I had to adjust the tilt on my fender.
I'd love to know what do you think of the new Fender Lines.. The Classic Player line MIM and the new Special Line which is MIA but a little less expensive. I was in Guitar Center this weekend and played the Road Worn 60s and the Classic Player 60s Strats, and was very impressed. They're almost as expensive as the American standards though, but they are very high quality reproductions of old guitars.
@gl0gg that is a false statement. they used to be made in japan, those are very valuable now. then in mexico, and now in korea and malaysia and indonasia.
Too much. Learn to troll with subtlety... Least you could have done is compared SRV to Hendrix, after all this video has a strat in it and I'm shocked the argument hasn't started already.

well im not sure on the coil part. but when i took off the pick guard i saw all the crap, cant remember what was what though so idk if anything was broken. however i may have put the guitar together wrong because my 5-point pickup switch's lower screw will turn but not catch on anything, so i was thinking maybe i messed with something the truss rod was attached to. should i try tightening the truss rod or is it supposed to be that easy to turn?
these vids helped me loads.. strat feels more right than before, at least. i was wondering, though. my strat's truss rod was insanely easy to turn..i figured it would've had more tension (im tuned to drop c if that makes a difference) so im not sure if it did anything. bout 1 yr ago i went to pawn it, (never played). wouldnt pay enough, so kept it. they said 5-point switch was broken n stuff, so i took it apart w\o knowin guitar tech. found a huge chunk of wood near coil and messed up my coil...
I have a non export fender strat 62 reissue that has the truss rod adjust under the pick board. Are there any advantages/disadvantages to having it there apart from have to remove the pick guard?
if you cant sound good on a squier then there is no ploint buying a more expensive guitar. a squier is hands down the best guitar for the money, better than anyother brand will do for 3X the price. and im directly comparing my bullet squier to my usa floydrose strat which is god damn beautiful to play
i have a squier that i put grover tuners on and got adjusted, not out of the box of course, but it plays beautifully...its my main gigging guitar........oh and it was made in china
it sucks that my 60's reissue has the truss rod under the pisk gaurd so you have to take the neck off what a ball buster considering strats need tweeking at least twice a year, at least where i live.
i just bought a starcaster yesterday, a cheaper version of this pretty much. Its single coiled so i wouldn't recommend it for metal but you can rock out all day with it.
any guitar is a good guitar for a beginner. you just have to be willing to buy it. and yes this is a good guitar for all types of music it mainly depends on the type of amp and effects you use that determines how the guitar sounds. but this guitar can pretty much do all styles.
Hard to say, it's a great guitar but a real fender can come pricy, might wanna get something cheaper like a Squier, the only difference between a Fender and a Squier is that the Squier is produced in mexico where the labor is cheaper, but you won't get the same amount of quality but it's a great beginner's guitar if you haven't got alot of funds to work with.
Only custom, American, and highway fenders are produced in the US. All the rest, elsewhere (mainly Mexico). And they all use high[er] grade parts. There's two.
They used to be made in Mexico, my old Squier was made in Mexico, it's quite possible they moved the production to some asian country, I'm not sure and I can't be arsed to find out.
Squier is a good beginner's guitar, if you do not have the money for something better, imagine buying a 1000$ guitar and then giving up on guitar a month later.
if it's a newer style then the trussrod hole is usually under the nut,at the headstock. Find the right size wrench. You say there's nothing in there but there has to be! peak in there with a flashlight and u should see the TR nut. Maybe the nut is missing?

when you talk about loosening or tightening a bolt, (truss rod)... you need to descibe it counter clockwise or clockwise. Saying right or left makes no sence.
From the angle shown in this video clockwise will tighten the rod and lessen the bow or relief. For an adjuster on the other end of neck , same is true looking at the butt end of the neck. Clock wise tightens.
Well you are right about a non exact science but non adjustment is a most dangerous option. The relief spec has nothing to do with opinions .010" to .012" at 8 or 9th fret is correct for a classic Fender neck. Always maintaining ~ .010" relief is exact enough that you CAN'T GO WRONG. Example: You buy a guitar that is playing correct with .010's (strings) and you switch to 008's & don't adjust. In a few months you will have a neck back bowed that even a luthier might not be able to fix.
_ THIS IS NEARLY PERFECT ADVICE ! It is a succinct explanation of exactly what NEEDS to be done when string gauges are changed. Re check once a month for 010" to 012" of an inch relief (Fender & Gibson factory specification). A business card? Well close enough I guess. You will likely need to do a tweak about twice per year due to seasonal humidity. NOT adjusting when needed is what can cause permanent damage . Only 1/6 to 1/4 turn at a time.
i have a fake fender and i wanna fix it,,coz some fret has buzz and the fret action is too high and my fingertips hurts when im playing fast licks.. please teach me how to fix my guitar,, even though it's a fake one ..i loved it for 3 years and we've been together through a lot of concerts..please help me
A) I Set My Action So i Cant Even Get A Rizla Paper Between The String And The Fret .
And Also To The Guy Who Said He Did It 4 Or 5 Rotations , Your Guitar Must Be Wankered ! You Should Only Be Looking At A Half Or Even A Quarter Turn !
I Own A Really Nice SG With Really Low Action But I Was Lucky Enough To Have A Friend In Guitars . If You Really Dont Know How To Do Your Truss Rod Prop[erly Then Your Best Getting A Professional To Look At It !
ok, i've rotated my truss rod counter clockwise at least 4 or 5 full rotations, if not more, and the distance between my strings and frets has not changed in the slightest.
all i'm trying to do is get rid of my strings making a rattling sound on the fretboard!
If you're in the U.S., take your guitar to Guitar Center on the weekend. The tech--some old guy who is a guitar wizard--set up my American Deluxe Strat for $40 (he charges $100 at his own shop... which is why I specifically mentioned Guitar Center.)
I used to own an original 62 strat in the 70's, adjustment was made via a screw at the other end of the neck where it joins to the body. You will probably have to remove the neck to do this as it is usually out of sight below the scratch plate, a matter of trial and error i'm afraid. Hope this answers your question.
apologise in advance im gonna sound like an idiot...the neck on my guitar is bending inwards so theres gap between then fretboard and the strings, which way do you turn it? im a noob i know but appreciate the help
tighten (clockwise i.e. righty tighty) to straighten neck. the strings tension bends the neck and increases the gap. the truss rod counters the string tension and reduces the gap.
Neck relief is not checked by depressing the string at the 1st and last fret. It's the 1st and 12th fret. Check clearance at the 5th fret. When tightening the truss rod, reduce string tension first. (easy, just lower the trem arm). Check tuning - the neck is now in a slightly different place. Be careful, and only make small adjustments of the nut. A mahogany neck will respond to adjustments much quicker than a maple one. A deep V maple neck can be slow to respond - sometimes a few hours.
I don't quite understand what this video is explaining. yeah i know I'm a newbie at guitars. I'm trying to learn as much as i can by myself about guitars and i wanted to see what this screw did. so i tightened it and nothing happened. so i tightened it a crap load more. how is my guitar in danger, like mantarams47 says? and can somebody please explain this too me more clearly. It's really really appreciated.
the only way your your guitars neck is going to be in danger of being damaged, is if you make huge adjustments, or make the adjustments with your strings tuned really high. why you would want to do either one, I don't, know, but i think the rule of thumb is to go in quater turns until your happy with the results
Fenders require much less turning than other makes...you can tell if you have a fender style neck if it has a "skunk stripe" on the back of the neck...not a seperate lamination, just the stripe...if so be very careful. If you doubt yourself just take it to a tech, it is possible to ruin an instrument!
No The neck doe's not break, But The truss rod nut if over tighten can break off. Yes that happen to me. Thank God stew mac sells a truss rod recovery kit and my troubles are all over!!
He moved the truss rod then said it looks straight? NO! The wood doesn't magically shift automatically. You need to wait roughly 10 minutes to actually see a change.

I Own A Really Nice SG With Really Low Action But I Was Lucky Enough To Have A Friend In Guitars . If You Really Dont Know How To Do Your Truss Rod Prop[erly Then Your Best Getting A Professional To Look At It !

4 or 5 rotations! WTF?
Hoopskidoodle 3 years ago
ok, i've rotated my truss rod counter clockwise at least 4 or 5 full rotations, if not more, and the distance between my strings and frets has not changed in the slightest.
all i'm trying to do is get rid of my strings making a rattling sound on the fretboard!

I shouldn't laugh, but i do. D::D:D Normally the adjustment is less than 1 full rotation. You should upper the strings from the bridge.

If you're in the U.S., take your guitar to Guitar Center on the weekend. The tech--some old guy who is a guitar wizard--set up my American Deluxe Strat for $40 (he charges $100 at his own shop... which is why I specifically mentioned Guitar Center.)

i loosen up my truss rod until the nut detached from the rod. now my guitar is like a bow. :))

i want to know how to adjust the truss rod on my 62 RI!!!! help!!
omarfusion 3 years ago
I used to own an original 62 strat in the 70's, adjustment was made via a screw at the other end of the neck where it joins to the body. You will probably have to remove the neck to do this as it is usually out of sight below the scratch plate, a matter of trial and error i'm afraid. Hope this answers your question.

tighten (clockwise i.e. righty tighty) to straighten neck. the strings tension bends the neck and increases the gap. the truss rod counters the string tension and reduces the gap.

Thanks, this videos are helpful. But I dont like that they are not namde correctly so I dont know which is the first or the last one.

the only way your your guitars neck is going to be in danger of being damaged, is if you make huge adjustments, or make the adjustments with your strings tuned really high. why you would want to do either one, I don't, know, but i think the rule of thumb is to go in quater turns until your happy with the results

Quick question, can the neck break during this
cuz i dont want mine to break =\
Slash1550 4 years ago
Fenders require much less turning than other makes...you can tell if you have a fender style neck if it has a "skunk stripe" on the back of the neck...not a seperate lamination, just the stripe...if so be very careful. If you doubt yourself just take it to a tech, it is possible to ruin an instrument!
